That's not to say you shouldn't pursue the art of letting go because of the difficult withdrawal phase. The rewards post-exit are equally satisfying. That's my experience with YouTube Premium. I used the subscription for years and loved it, but [decided to give up](https://www.androidpolice.com/cancel-youtube-premium-android-ios/). While I struggled the first few days after canceling it, I've learned to live without the subscription. ## Why I thought YouTube Premium was essential ### It's hard not to love the ad-free experience -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  Close -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  For a content streaming platform, the core of a premium subscription is to give users an ad-free experience because ads can ruin the viewing experience. Given how frequently ads appear on YouTube videos, the ad-free experience seems more essential than ever for enjoying content viewing on the platform. If I had to rank my favorite features in that subscription offering, the background play support comes second and perhaps the last thing other than the ad-free experience I loved. Listening to my favorite podcasts on YouTube without any interruptions from advertisers while working on something else on my [Android phone](https://www.androidpolice.com/best-camera-phone/) feels great only because of the subscription. There are other reasons to love YouTube Premium, such as Smart downloads, free YouTube Music Premium, higher bitrate content, offline downloads, and access to experimental features. However, my decision to cancel the service doesn't come as a mark of protest at Google's way of pushing YouTube Premium to everyone. It happened because of the feeling that I was paying for most of the things I didn't use. YouTube Premium costs \$13.99 a month for the Individual plan, and it might seem like great value for money if you consider that YouTube Music is included in it, which otherwise would've cost \$10.99 per month for the Individual plan. However, including YouTube Music in the YouTube Premium offering is great if you only listen to music.  While I love YouTube Music's recommendation engine, I don't like how a significant portion of my activity on YouTube Music is reflected on YouTube and vice versa. One major annoyance I couldn't stand was that subscribing to an artist on YouTube Music means you're subscribed to that profile on YouTube. It's also strange to see music recommendations based on non-music playlists I created on YouTube, which produces a cluttered UI. These issues wouldn't have appeared had YouTube Music not been built into YouTube's main infrastructure. YouTube Music never worked for me because I'm more into having a dedicated space for listening to music and podcasts with no dependency on another platform that serves a different purpose. I don't travel much and rarely visit places where connectivity is an issue, so features like Smart downloads and offline downloads in YouTube Premium don't help. For the type of content I watch on YouTube, the higher bitrate doesn't matter. After taking these into account, \$13.99 a month stings. ## It's been a rough adjustment without YouTube Premium ### I don't miss it, though  It didn't take long to discover the faultlines of YouTube Premium and realize that I'm paying for most of the features I don't need. However, I took a step back from canceling the subscription previously because of the background play support and ad-free experience. I expected it would be a rough adjustment without the YouTube Premium subscription, but I never thought the degree would be this high. After canceling the subscription, I saw plenty of advertisements everywhere on the YouTube app: before the video, in the middle, towards the end. They now appear more often than they used to when I started using YouTube Premium. It's worse if you watch on your TV. YouTube videos without a subscription on smart TVs can turn into an ad nightmare when you get back-to-back unskippable ads. Despite the odds, I moved on from YouTube Premium because I was never addicted to watching its content on my phone. The ad blocker and the ability to enter picture-in-picture (PiP) mode in the Microsoft Edge browser on my laptop ensure an ad-free-like experience and allow me to focus elsewhere while the content is still playing. When it feels convenient to watch YouTube content on my phone, I use my Firefox browser with the uBlock Origin extension installed. It also supports PiP mode, so I can switch apps without interrupting the video. However, YouTube on a web browser and the app experience aren't the same. The YouTube app on my Android phone feels more fluid than using it on the web browser, enough to bring me back into the fold if Google focuses more on essentialism. I'm [willing to pay again to use YouTube](https://www.androidpolice.com/youtube-premium-needs-to-change/) if Google launches a separate subscription plan that adds support for background play and an ad-free experience. YouTube Premium Lite is under testing in countries like Australia, Germany, and Thailand to serve that purpose for people like me who only care about an ad-free experience or minimal ads. Do they realize watching with Premium pays creators better than watching the ad supported version, while using an adblocker on YouTube means the people who create the videos you enjoy watching don’t get paid for your views? If you found my channel, it would have nothing but a few family videos and is not monetized. Call me old fashioned, but I think people being paid for their work is a good thing. 🤷‍♀ As to the people who tell me they give creators more money by watching with ads, respectfully, that is unlikely. When you watch YouTube with ads, a creator with a monetized channel makes a couple of cents. When you have YouTube premium, YouTube takes 45% of the cost of the subscription, and the remaining 55% is divided to the channels you watch based on watchtime. Ads generate much more than paid subscriptions. But ads have increased so much, that content is barely pleasant to watch anymore. My subscription guarantees the video makers get revenue regardless of ads. That said I did some back of the envelope calculations and think I would have to watch thousands of videos a month for my subscription to match what makers would normally get paid from ads. Do you have any source backing these claims? I have seen multiple screenshots from creators which show that their earnings from ad watchers+ad block users is several times more than that of premium users, even if u consider the difference in the number of users. Also this article is advocating canceling YT Premium for an ad blocker. Not really a sensible approach for a journalist. I'm not on team Google but if you're actively trying to bypass paying them for a service and are getting said services it's stealing. I don't like ads either so I pay for the services so I don't see them. People pay like \$8 a day for coffee and eat out all the time yet 14 bucks a month for something you use daily is too much. More and more of these appear on this site. Instead of just telling people that for most of their YouTube Premium needs, they can simply switch to Firefox + uBlock Origin + SponsorBlock add-ons. You can watch YouTube without constant interruptions and even playback in the background while you are in another app. Disable the actual YouTube app and add a YouTube link to your home screen. Even on phones, I preferred NewPipe over the official app. The official app is just a bloated mess. That being said, I use YouTube Music mostly, so I have it. YouTube gets absolutely 0% of my music preferences from my YouTube Music account that I've used for 10 years. Literally the worst thing about it is I can't get the music I like to show up on YouTube on a Chromecast. In fairness this is indeed a weak point and should be integrated or optional but easy enough, even on desktop one can use a dedicated profile for YT music Vs YT video. I get the value alone from just YouTube, but I was using Google Play Music before the switch to YTM, so it was a no brainer for me to start using it. I had already uploaded most of my music that I had ripped from cd and Youtube music has biggest library, admittedly not all the highest quality. Literally millions of videos, free movies without commercials. I just read they are bringing back Youtube Premium Lite that comes without music that makes it cheaper. Don't tell YouTube, but I would pay double, and not even blink. My whole family is signed up, having no YouTube commercials is priceless, those commercials are horrible and too long. However, I know I am blessed and can afford it. I do agree that the combined youtube and youtube music subscriptions are a problem. Having youtube videos and music production instructional videos in youtube music is a horrible experience. Easy. 🤗 Re ads vs free Most people actually seem to expect everything for free these days, whether out of entitlement or not (simply not willing to pay for a service). I think the question for YT premium is simple, if you want to watch ad free and get rid of Spotify and co then this is a no brainer especially with background playback (who really wants to drain their battery just to listen to some music 😂 and yet many haven't changed their behaviour or realised the benefit this one feature provides). The rest of features is really just a bonus, even offline downloads it's not as essential compared to adfree and background playback and having access a huge amount of mus Sure some will recommend other apps to avoid the ads and I my self used it too, but it feels morally right to pay and make watching as well as listening easy and practical. It's the same change I feel is similar to mobile plans, like moving from prepay to bill pay and now the norm even being near unlimited capacity for everything, one just can simply enjoy consuming what they want whenever and for how long. But of course some people still prefer limited bundles and go through extra inconvenience, that's fine if that works or feels better value. For me time is money and it changed our lifestyle for the easier. P.s. I no longer miss my Spotify subscription 😂 (and tbh. I used to listen to higher quality and even lossless but now I don't really even miss that because overall it's good enough). P.P.S. seems like people haven't figured out yet to create a separate channel on YouTube to be used for just YouTube music. In fairness I was surprised too that it otherwise gets mixed up with regular YT video watching, this should be separated but it was an easy manage workaround. Even on desktop one can use a dedicated chrome profile for user YT music, apparently from YT video.
