| Boilerpipe Text | Hello hello! I’m back with another kitchen tutorial for you guys that you’re going to love. I’ve seen so many people (ahem, Tony) almost slice their hands when cutting and removing the seed from an avocado that I had to share my go-to hack.
Honestly, this tutorial is pretty mind-blowing, so get ready to impress your friends when you show them the easiest way to cut an avocado without cutting off your fingers.
This simple technique will bring you one step closer to becoming the kitchen boss that I know you are. Plus, you can use it to make some of my absolute fav recipes like my famous
guacamole
,
these
delicious tacos, and even
fudgy brownies
.
I had you at brownies, didn’t I? Let’s get to it!
Choosing the right avocado
Before you get slicing, it’s important to choose the right avocado to use in a variety of recipes. Here are some tips for picking the right one:
Check the color.
The outside of your avocado should be a very dark green. If it’s bright green that means it still needs to ripen a bit.
Give it a gentle push.
Press on the avocado to see how soft it is. Choose an avocado that has a little bit of give but isn’t mushy. This will allow you to easily slice and cube your avocado without it getting too soft.
Remove the stem.
Try taking the little nub of a stem off of the top of your avocado. If your avocado is ripe, the step should remove easily and it should be green underneath.
Plan your recipe.
If you’re making guacamole or will be mashing the avocado, feel free to choose a softer, riper avocado. If you’re going to cube or slice it, opt for one that has just a tiny bit of softness to it when you press the skin.
How to cut an avocado properly
With this simple tutorial you’ll be able to cut an avocado, remove the seed and even the skin in just a few steps:
Choose your knife.
Use a small paring knife – no need for a huge butcher knife.
Start vertically.
Cut your avocado vertically all the way around. You’ll feel the knife hit the seed as you go around.
Turn & cut vertically again.
Once you’ve cut it in half, turn your avocado the other way (keeping it vertical) to cut it in half again all the way around.
Twist & pull.
Twist the avocado around the seed and pull it apart.
Twist once more.
Twist again and you’ll have four equal pieces!
Remove the seed safely.
Grip the seed with your hands (or use a spoon) and pull it off. Don’t use a knife.
Remove the skin.
Peel off the skin from each 1/4 piece, and mash or dice however you like.

How to store avocados
Store it whole.
If you haven’t cut into your avocado yet, feel free to store it at room temperature to let it ripen. If you’re finding that it is ripening too quickly before you want to use it, simply store it in the refrigerator.
Store it cut.
If you’ve cut into your avocado, store halves or cubes/slices of fresh avocado in airtight containers,
bags
, or with beeswax food wraps for up to 2-3 days in the refrigerator. Feel free to squeeze a little lemon juice on your avocado to prevent browning.

I thought at first that this series was ridiculous, because, come on, who doesn’t know how to dice an onion or cut an avocado? Then I watched my husband cut an onion and I realized I may be in a minority. He definitely needs a video on how to cut an onion. My apologies.
