| Boilerpipe Text | ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The 2026 Special Olympics Alaska Winter Games are set to begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday at East High School.
“The Winter Games are such an exciting time,” said Sarah Arts, Special Olympics Alaska CEO. “It’s an opportunity for athletes who have been training and competing all season long to get together and put all of their practice and efforts into a grand stage.”
The games will take place across three days, ending at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Clark Middle School.
Five events have been scheduled for the games: alpine skiing and snowboarding at Hilltop Ski Area, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at East High School and floor hockey at Clark High School.
“It’s just a really big community event and an opportunity for the Alaskan community to come out and support people with intellectual disabilities,” Arts said.
Athletes from across the state have been invited to compete in the games after winning qualifying matches in their local communities.
“This winter games, we have Kodiak, Fairbanks, Mat-Su and Anchorage competing.”
According to Arts, this year’s games are particularly unique, as it marks the 25th anniversary of the 2001 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Anchorage.
“Over 80 countries came, hundreds of athletes from all over the world,” she said. “The legacy of that games is just so amazing and impactful for Alaska. So, this weekend, we have a chance to also celebrate that with it being the 25th anniversary.”
“We’ve been doing lots of training to get ready for our sports and preparing for the games this weekend,” said Brian Knight, an advanced alpine skier who competed in the 2001 games. “They have lots of courage, doing their best, and having lots of fun.”
Ahead of the games, Arts is inviting the community to get involved.
“We still have a lot of volunteer needs for the weekend, whether it’s handing out sandwiches or helping with score timing or helping keep score at floor hockey,” she said.
