(AP) We have an updated medal count from the 2016 Rio Olympics. Before Tuesday's competition began, the United States was a clear-cut leader in the medal count and also was tied for most gold medals earned. The United States team had 19 total medals after competition ended Monday evening; the team now has five gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals. Behind Team USA was China with 13 medals, Japan with 10 medals and Russia with 10 medals. China was tied with America with five gold medals. Medal highlights for the American team on Monday included gold medals for Lilly King and Ryan Murphy and silver medal for Kathleen Baker in swimming; silver medals for David Boudia and Steele Johnson for 10m platform diving; and bronze medals for Conor Dwyer, David Plummer, Men's 100m backstroke and Katie Meili in swimming. The U.S. is on track to meet or top its 2012 Olympic totals, where they brought home 103 medals, including 46 gold. China came in second at the London Olympics with 88 medals and Russian in third at 79. Numerous Russian athletes have been disqualified from the Rio Olympics due to a doping scandal.
