By Peter Bohr | Illustration by Neil Webb January 10, 2025 Average new-car prices have flirted with the $50,000 mark since the supply chain shocks during the worst of the pandemic. That means monthly payments of nearly $800 on a five-year loan for those with good credit and a hefty down payment. That’s simply unaffordable for many folks. Such car buyers often turn to “previously owned” cars. Although it can make sense to let a previous owner absorb a car’s relatively large initial depreciation, there are excellent reasons to buy new rather than used. Spankin’-new cars have the latest technology, the best warranties, and often a lower interest rate—not to mention that intoxicating new-car smell. Following the demise of Mitsubishi’s Mirage and the rumored end of Nissan’s Versa, sub-$20,000 new cars have become a mere memory. However, several automakers offer quality new vehicles for less than $25,000, a sum that reduces monthly payments to around $400, assuming good credit and 20% down. But don’t expect to find a highfalutin nameplate, a three-row SUV, a sports car, or a hybrid among them—although the list does include both sedans and SUVs. They’re relatively small vehicles, but they’re big on saving gasoline. And they can be surprisingly large on safety and convenience features, even on base models. Examples: All cars on the following list have lane-departure warning and automatic emergency braking. Each has an automatic transmission and air-conditioning, and most have Android Auto/Apple CarPlay integration. As for reliability, Consumer Reports forecasts each to be average or better than average, and Hyundais and Kias carry exceptionally long, five-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranties. The prices of these cars, listed in alphabetical order, are for base models and include destination fees. Buick Envista. $23,995. All-new last year, it’s a four-door SUV that the 2024 AAA Car Guide calls one of the best vehicles under $40,000 (28 mpg city/32 mpg highway). Chevrolet Trax. $21,495. Redesigned for 2024, this four-door SUV shares its underpinnings and drivetrain with its General Motors cousin, the Buick Envista (28 mpg city/32 mpg highway). Hyundai Elantra. $23,025. A four-door sedan that received a styling refresh in 2024 and an IIHS Top Safety Pick award (32 mpg city/41 mpg highway). Hyundai Venue. $22,690. This four-door SUV comes with lots of standard convenience and safety features (29 mpg city/32 mpg highway).  Kia K4. $23,145. Replacing the Forte for 2025, this all-new four-door sedan is longer and wider than its predecessor. (30 mpg city/40 mpg highway). Kia Sou l . $21,665. A four-door SUV with stand-apart styling and nimble handling (27 mpg city/33 highway). Nissan Kicks. $23,220. Redesigned for 2025, this four-door SUV is the only vehicle on the list with available AWD (28 mpg city/35 mpg highway). Nissan Sentra. $22,730. A four-door sedan, it features a roomy cabin and trunk (30 mpg city/40 mpg highway). Toyota Corolla. $23,310. A four-door sedan unchanged for 2025, it ranked highest among compact cars in a recent J.D. Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (32 mpg city/41 mpg highway). Volkswagen Jetta. $23,220. This four-door sedan has refreshed styling inside and out for 2025 (29 mpg city/39 mpg highway). Because there’s less profit in such affordable vehicles, they can be challenging to find on dealer lots, cautions Brian Liberman, head of the Auto Club’s Car Buying Service. They’re out there, he says, but it may take extra effort to locate one.
