But many people have experienced dramatic losses, some through bogus investment platforms touted by scammers as sure moneymakers.\nThe Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns consumers that crypto investing comes with many risks, including scams.\nVirtual money, unlike dollars, francs and other currencies, isn’t backed by any government or central bank. Even so, you can use crypto to buy goods and services, exchange it for U.S. dollars and other conventional currencies on digital markets, and even obtain it at specialized ATMs.\nUnlike the value of government-backed money, that of virtual currencies is driven entirely by supply and demand. This can create wild swings that produce big gains for investors — or big losses. Crypto investments are subject to far less regulatory protection than traditional financial products such as stocks, bonds and mutual funds. Crypto ATMs are favored by criminals for their anonymity and general lack of oversight.\nCryptocurrency scams fall into two categories: investment and payment. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported that investment scams, including cryptocurrency investment scams, had the highest median losses of all scams reported in 2024. The FBI began\nOperation Level Up\nas an attempt to identify and warn victims of investment scams. More than three-quarters of them were unaware they were being scammed.\nVideo: Cryptocurrency Safety\nWhen using cryptocurrency to pay scammers, victims lost more than $1.4 billion in 2024, according to the FTC. Scams where the victims were directed to use a cryptocurrency ATM have increased nearly tenfold from 2020 to 2023. (AARP is\npushing for state laws\nto regulate this type of ATM and protect consumers from scams.)\nTypes of cryptocurrency investment scams\nUsing investment platforms.\n Criminals lure unwary investors into setting up accounts on an online investment platform with the promise of fabulous returns. What the investors don’t know is that the platform actually is a Ponzi scheme, in which they’re paid returns out of money put in by other investors.\nPhony investment managers.\n You may be contacted out of the blue by someone \nclaiming to be an investment manager\n, who will promise to grow your money — but only if you buy cryptocurrency. They’ll guide you to an investment website that looks real but is a clever fake. When you try to withdraw some of your earnings, you can’t, or you’ll be told you first need to pay high fees. \nScammers sometimes advertise individual retirement accounts as IRS-approved to make them seem like a less risky investment. Some self-directed IRAs do allow investment in virtual currencies, but the Internal Revenue Service does not approve or review these investments.\nCelebrity impersonations.\n Scammers \nimpersonate celebrities\n, contacting fans through social media to offer a chance to make a killing on a cryptocurrency investment. They’ll ask you to send cryptocurrency to them by clicking on a link or \nusing a QR code\n that supposedly belongs to the celebrity. In reality, your cryptocurrency goes straight to the scammer, and you’re not going to see it again.\nFinancial grooming\/romance scams. \n“I’m convinced that\nthese crypto romance frauds\nare the most common fraud in the world right now, and they’re really, really a problem,” says Steve Baker, a former FTC official who publishes the \nBaker Fraud Report\n newsletter. \nBaker says crypto-related romance scams are so lucrative that organized crime organizations kidnap people to work in call centers in places such as Cambodia and Myanmar. The captive workers are forced to entice investors on the other side of the world with\nfake promises of romance\nin an effort to lure them into crooked investment schemes. (For more on these prison-like scam call centers, listen to \nthis episode\n of the AARP podcast \nThe Perfect Scam\n.)\nTypes of cryptocurrency payment scams\nIn this category, scammers who are running some fraud or another will pressure you to pay them in cryptocurrency, something no legitimate business or \ngovernment agency\n would do.\nFor criminals, cryptocurrency has the advantage of being difficult to trace, without the same legal protections as credit or debit cards, and payments usually can’t be reversed, according to the FTC’s website.\n“Do not invest in crypto with someone that sends you a text message, reaches out to you on social media or finds you online somewhere,” says Amy Nofziger, director of fraud victim support with AARP. “And if someone says that you owe a fee or payment and they [tell you to] directly go [to a] crypto ATM machine, certainly it’s a scam.” \nRed flags\nClaims that you’ll make big money.\n Someone you don’t know sends you a message out of the blue about an incredibly lucrative virtual currency investment opportunity involving no risk and surefire profits.\nPressure to pay.\n A call, text, email or social media message claiming to be from a government agency, \nutility\n or other official body seeks a crypto payment to cover a bill, debt or fee.\nHow to protect yourself\nUnderstand the risk\n. The virtual currency trade is speculative and volatile. As the FTC notes, “An investment that may be worth thousands of dollars on Tuesday could only be worth hundreds on Wednesday.”\nResist pressure to buy right now.\n Criminals often try to create a false sense of urgency around a supposedly red-hot cryptocurrency.\nCheck out any dealer\n in virtual currency options or futures contracts before you buy. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has a tool for \nrunning an online background check\n. It’s not a good idea to invest in or trade virtual currencies on the advice of someone you’ve only dealt with online, whether it’s an anonymous tipster on social media or a supposed romantic partner.\nDo your research.\n Thoroughly research any virtual currency platform or digital wallet provider before providing any credit card information, wiring money or disclosing sensitive personal data.\nCarefully read any agreement \nwith a digital wallet provider. They likely will not accept responsibility for replacing your money if it is stolen, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau warns. Note: Banks don't accept responsibility for replacing your money if you were somehow connected to the theft through manipulation.\nIf you own crypto, never share your “private keys” \n— the long letter-and-number codes that enable you to access your virtual currency — with anyone. Keep them in a secure place.\nWhat to do if you’ve been targeted\nSubmit a report\n to the FBI \nInternet Crime Complaint Center\n (IC3) or contact your local FBI Field Office and provide as much information about the transaction as possible.\nReport it to your local police\n. If they resist taking your report, persist so you have a record of the loss.\nFile a report\n through the \nFTC’s online form\n at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.\nFor support and guidance\n, the trained fraud specialists at the free\nAARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline\n, 877 -908-3360, can share information on what to do next and how to avoid future scams. Even so, you can use crypto to buy goods and services, exchange it for U.S. dollars and other conventional currencies on digital markets, and even obtain it at specialized ATMs.\n\nUnlike the value of government-backed money, that of virtual currencies is driven entirely by supply and demand. This can create wild swings that produce big gains for investors — or big losses. Crypto investments are subject to far less regulatory protection than traditional financial products such as stocks, bonds and mutual funds. Crypto ATMs are favored by criminals for their anonymity and general lack of oversight.\n\nCryptocurrency scams fall into two categories: investment and payment. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported that investment scams, including cryptocurrency investment scams, had the highest median losses of all scams reported in 2024. Scams where the victims were directed to use a cryptocurrency ATM have increased nearly tenfold from 2020 to 2023. (AARP is [pushing for state laws](https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/advocacy\/states-crack-down-crypto-atm-2024\/ \"pushing for state laws\") to regulate this type of ATM and protect consumers from scams.)\n\n### Types of cryptocurrency investment scams\n**Using investment platforms.** Criminals lure unwary investors into setting up accounts on an online investment platform with the promise of fabulous returns. They’ll guide you to an investment website that looks real but is a clever fake. When you try to withdraw some of your earnings, you can’t, or you’ll be told you first need to pay high fees. \n\nScammers sometimes advertise individual retirement accounts as IRS-approved to make them seem like a less risky investment. Some self-directed IRAs do allow investment in virtual currencies, but the Internal Revenue Service does not approve or review these investments.\n\n[Home & Technology]()\n\n[Home Resource Center Tips and resources for aging in place, decluttering, DIY projects and more](https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/membership\/benefits\/home-life\/home-resources\/)\n\nMembers only\n\n**Celebrity impersonations.** Scammers [impersonate celebrities](https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/money\/scams-fraud\/crooks-celebrities-impostors\/ \"criminals impersonate celebrities\"), contacting fans through social media to offer a chance to make a killing on a cryptocurrency investment. They’ll ask you to send cryptocurrency to them by clicking on a link or [using a QR code](https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/money\/scams-fraud\/qr-codes\/ \"qr codes are used by criminals, too\") that supposedly belongs to the celebrity. In reality, your cryptocurrency goes straight to the scammer, and you’re not going to see it again.\n\n**Financial grooming\/romance scams.** “I’m convinced that [these crypto romance frauds](https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/money\/scams-fraud\/what-are-pig-butchering-scams\/ \"these cryto-romance frauds\") are the most common fraud in the world right now, and they’re really, really a problem,” says Steve Baker, a former FTC official who publishes the *Baker Fraud Report* newsletter.\n\nBaker says crypto-related romance scams are so lucrative that organized crime organizations kidnap people to work in call centers in places such as Cambodia and Myanmar. The captive workers are forced to entice investors on the other side of the world with [fake promises of romance](https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/money\/scams-fraud\/romance\/ \"fake promises of romance\") in an effort to lure them into crooked investment schemes. The virtual currency trade is speculative and volatile. As the FTC notes, “An investment that may be worth thousands of dollars on Tuesday could only be worth hundreds on Wednesday.”\n- **Resist pressure to buy right now.** Criminals often try to create a false sense of urgency around a supposedly red-hot cryptocurrency.\n- **Check out any dealer** in virtual currency options or futures contracts before you buy. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has a tool for [running an online background check](https:\/\/www.cftc.gov\/LearnAndProtect \"run a background check on any dealer\"). It’s not a good idea to invest in or trade virtual currencies on the advice of someone you’ve only dealt with online, whether it’s an anonymous tipster on social media or a supposed romantic partner.\n- **Do your research.** Thoroughly research any virtual currency platform or digital wallet provider before providing any credit card information, wiring money or disclosing sensitive personal data.\n- **Carefully read any agreement** with a digital wallet provider. They likely will not accept responsibility for replacing your money if it is stolen, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau warns. Note: Banks don't accept responsibility for replacing your money if you were somehow connected to the theft through manipulation.\n- **If you own crypto, never share your “private keys”** — the long letter-and-number codes that enable you to access your virtual currency — with anyone. Keep them in a secure place.\n### What to do if you’ve been targeted\n- **Submit a report** to the FBI [Internet Crime Complaint Center](https:\/\/www.ic3.gov\/Home\/ComplaintChoice \"fbi ic3 contact\") (IC3) or contact your local FBI Field Office and provide as much information about the transaction as possible.\n- **Report it to your local police**. If they resist taking your report, persist so you have a record of the loss.\n- **File a report** through the [FTC’s online form](https:\/\/reportfraud.ftc.gov\/#\/ \"report fraud to the ftc\") at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.\n- **For support and guidance**, the trained fraud specialists at the free [AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline](https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/money\/scams-fraud\/helpline\/ \"AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline\"), 877 -908-3360, can share information on what to do next and how to avoid future scams. They’ll guide you to an investment website that looks real but is a clever fake. When you try to withdraw some of your earnings, you can’t, or you’ll be told you first need to pay high fees. \n\nScammers sometimes advertise individual retirement accounts as IRS-approved to make them seem like a less risky investment. Some self-directed IRAs do allow investment in virtual currencies, but the Internal Revenue Service does not approve or review these investments.\n\n**Celebrity impersonations.** Scammers [impersonate celebrities](https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/money\/scams-fraud\/crooks-celebrities-impostors\/ \"criminals impersonate celebrities\"), contacting fans through social media to offer a chance to make a killing on a cryptocurrency investment. They’ll ask you to send cryptocurrency to them by clicking on a link or [using a QR code](https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/money\/scams-fraud\/qr-codes\/ \"qr codes are used by criminals, too\") that supposedly belongs to the celebrity. In reality, your cryptocurrency goes straight to the scammer, and you’re not going to see it again.\n\n**Financial grooming\/romance scams.** “I’m convinced that [these crypto romance frauds](https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/money\/scams-fraud\/what-are-pig-butchering-scams\/ \"these cryto-romance frauds\") are the most common fraud in the world right now, and they’re really, really a problem,” says Steve Baker, a former FTC official who publishes the *Baker Fraud Report* newsletter.\n\nBaker says crypto-related romance scams are so lucrative that organized crime organizations kidnap people to work in call centers in places such as Cambodia and Myanmar. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has a tool for [running an online background check](https:\/\/www.cftc.gov\/LearnAndProtect \"run a background check on any dealer\"). It’s not a good idea to invest in or trade virtual currencies on the advice of someone you’ve only dealt with online, whether it’s an anonymous tipster on social media or a supposed romantic partner.\n- **Do your research.** Thoroughly research any virtual currency platform or digital wallet provider before providing any credit card information, wiring money or disclosing sensitive personal data.\n- **Carefully read any agreement** with a digital wallet provider. They likely will not accept responsibility for replacing your money if it is stolen, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau warns. Note: Banks don't accept responsibility for replacing your money if you were somehow connected to the theft through manipulation.\n- **If you own crypto, never share your “private keys”** — the long letter-and-number codes that enable you to access your virtual currency — with anyone. Keep them in a secure place.\n### What to do if you’ve been targeted\n- **Submit a report** to the FBI [Internet Crime Complaint Center](https:\/\/www.ic3.gov\/Home\/ComplaintChoice \"fbi ic3 contact\") (IC3) or contact your local FBI Field Office and provide as much information about the transaction as possible.\n- **Report it to your local police**. Even so, you can use crypto to buy goods and services, exchange it for U.S. dollars and other conventional currencies on digital markets, and even obtain it at specialized ATMs. Unlike the value of government-backed money, that of virtual currencies is driven entirely by supply and demand. This can create wild swings that produce big gains for investors — or big losses. Crypto investments are subject to far less regulatory protection than traditional financial products such as stocks, bonds and mutual funds. Crypto ATMs are favored by criminals for their anonymity and general lack of oversight. Cryptocurrency scams fall into two categories: investment and payment. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported that investment scams, including cryptocurrency investment scams, had the highest median losses of all scams reported in 2024. The FBI began [Operation Level Up](https://www.fbi.gov/how-we-can-help-you/victim-services/national-crimes-and-victim-resources/operation-level-up "Operation Level Up") as an attempt to identify and warn victims of investment scams. Scams where the victims were directed to use a cryptocurrency ATM have increased nearly tenfold from 2020 to 2023. (AARP is [pushing for state laws](https://www.aarp.org/advocacy/states-crack-down-crypto-atm-2024/ "pushing for state laws") to regulate this type of ATM and protect consumers from scams.) ### Types of cryptocurrency investment scams **Using investment platforms.** Criminals lure unwary investors into setting up accounts on an online investment platform with the promise of fabulous returns. They’ll guide you to an investment website that looks real but is a clever fake. When you try to withdraw some of your earnings, you can’t, or you’ll be told you first need to pay high fees. Scammers sometimes advertise individual retirement accounts as IRS-approved to make them seem like a less risky investment. Some self-directed IRAs do allow investment in virtual currencies, but the Internal Revenue Service does not approve or review these investments. They’ll ask you to send cryptocurrency to them by clicking on a link or [using a QR code](https://www.aarp.org/money/scams-fraud/qr-codes/ "qr codes are used by criminals, too") that supposedly belongs to the celebrity. In reality, your cryptocurrency goes straight to the scammer, and you’re not going to see it again. **Financial grooming/romance scams.** “I’m convinced that [these crypto romance frauds](https://www.aarp.org/money/scams-fraud/what-are-pig-butchering-scams/ "these cryto-romance frauds") are the most common fraud in the world right now, and they’re really, really a problem,” says Steve Baker, a former FTC official who publishes the *Baker Fraud Report* newsletter. The virtual currency trade is speculative and volatile. As the FTC notes, “An investment that may be worth thousands of dollars on Tuesday could only be worth hundreds on Wednesday.” - **Resist pressure to buy right now.** Criminals often try to create a false sense of urgency around a supposedly red-hot cryptocurrency. - **Check out any dealer** in virtual currency options or futures contracts before you buy. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has a tool for [running an online background check](https://www.cftc.gov/LearnAndProtect "run a background check on any dealer"). It’s not a good idea to invest in or trade virtual currencies on the advice of someone you’ve only dealt with online, whether it’s an anonymous tipster on social media or a supposed romantic partner. - **Do your research.** Thoroughly research any virtual currency platform or digital wallet provider before providing any credit card information, wiring money or disclosing sensitive personal data. - **Carefully read any agreement** with a digital wallet provider. They likely will not accept responsibility for replacing your money if it is stolen, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau warns. Note: Banks don't accept responsibility for replacing your money if you were somehow connected to the theft through manipulation. - **If you own crypto, never share your “private keys”** — the long letter-and-number codes that enable you to access your virtual currency — with anyone. Keep them in a secure place. ### What to do if you’ve been targeted - **Submit a report** to the FBI [Internet Crime Complaint Center](https://www.ic3.gov/Home/ComplaintChoice "fbi ic3 contact") (IC3) or contact your local FBI Field Office and provide as much information about the transaction as possible. - **Report it to your local police**. If they resist taking your report, persist so you have a record of the loss. - **File a report** through the [FTC’s online form](https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/ "report fraud to the ftc") at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. - **For support and guidance**, the trained fraud specialists at the free [AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline](https://www.aarp.org/money/scams-fraud/helpline/ "AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline"), 877 -908-3360, can share information on what to do next and how to avoid future scams. But many people have experienced dramatic losses, some through bogus investment platforms touted by scammers as sure moneymakers. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns consumers that crypto investing comes with many risks, including scams. Virtual money, unlike dollars, francs and other currencies, isn’t backed by any government or central bank. Even so, you can use crypto to buy goods and services, exchange it for U.S. dollars and other conventional currencies on digital markets, and even obtain it at specialized ATMs. Unlike the value of government-backed money, that of virtual currencies is driven entirely by supply and demand. This can create wild swings that produce big gains for investors — or big losses. Crypto investments are subject to far less regulatory protection than traditional financial products such as stocks, bonds and mutual funds. Crypto ATMs are favored by criminals for their anonymity and general lack of oversight. Cryptocurrency scams fall into two categories: investment and payment. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported that investment scams, including cryptocurrency investment scams, had the highest median losses of all scams reported in 2024. The FBI began [Operation Level Up](https://www.fbi.gov/how-we-can-help-you/victim-services/national-crimes-and-victim-resources/operation-level-up "Operation Level Up") as an attempt to identify and warn victims of investment scams. More than three-quarters of them were unaware they were being scammed. Video: Cryptocurrency Safety When using cryptocurrency to pay scammers, victims lost more than \$1.4 billion in 2024, according to the FTC. Scams where the victims were directed to use a cryptocurrency ATM have increased nearly tenfold from 2020 to 2023. (AARP is [pushing for state laws](https://www.aarp.org/advocacy/states-crack-down-crypto-atm-2024/ "pushing for state laws") to regulate this type of ATM and protect consumers from scams.) ### Types of cryptocurrency investment scams **Using investment platforms.** Criminals lure unwary investors into setting up accounts on an online investment platform with the promise of fabulous returns. What the investors don’t know is that the platform actually is a Ponzi scheme, in which they’re paid returns out of money put in by other investors. **Phony investment managers.** You may be contacted out of the blue by someone [claiming to be an investment manager](https://www.aarp.org/money/scams-fraud/investment/ "criminals posing as investment managers"), who will promise to grow your money — but only if you buy cryptocurrency. They’ll guide you to an investment website that looks real but is a clever fake. When you try to withdraw some of your earnings, you can’t, or you’ll be told you first need to pay high fees. Scammers sometimes advertise individual retirement accounts as IRS-approved to make them seem like a less risky investment. Some self-directed IRAs do allow investment in virtual currencies, but the Internal Revenue Service does not approve or review these investments. **Celebrity impersonations.** Scammers [impersonate celebrities](https://www.aarp.org/money/scams-fraud/crooks-celebrities-impostors/ "criminals impersonate celebrities"), contacting fans through social media to offer a chance to make a killing on a cryptocurrency investment. They’ll ask you to send cryptocurrency to them by clicking on a link or [using a QR code](https://www.aarp.org/money/scams-fraud/qr-codes/ "qr codes are used by criminals, too") that supposedly belongs to the celebrity. In reality, your cryptocurrency goes straight to the scammer, and you’re not going to see it again. **Financial grooming/romance scams.** “I’m convinced that [these crypto romance frauds](https://www.aarp.org/money/scams-fraud/what-are-pig-butchering-scams/ "these cryto-romance frauds") are the most common fraud in the world right now, and they’re really, really a problem,” says Steve Baker, a former FTC official who publishes the *Baker Fraud Report* newsletter. For criminals, cryptocurrency has the advantage of being difficult to trace, without the same legal protections as credit or debit cards, and payments usually can’t be reversed, according to the FTC’s website. “Do not invest in crypto with someone that sends you a text message, reaches out to you on social media or finds you online somewhere,” says Amy Nofziger, director of fraud victim support with AARP. “And if someone says that you owe a fee or payment and they \[tell you to\] directly go \[to a\] crypto ATM machine, certainly it’s a scam.” ### Red flags - **Claims that you’ll make big money.** Someone you don’t know sends you a message out of the blue about an incredibly lucrative virtual currency investment opportunity involving no risk and surefire profits. - **Pressure to pay.** A call, text, email or social media message claiming to be from a government agency, [utility](https://www.aarp.org/money/scams-fraud/utility?intcmp=AE-FWN-LIB4-POS13 "utility scams") or other official body seeks a crypto payment to cover a bill, debt or fee. ### How to protect yourself - **Understand the risk**. The virtual currency trade is speculative and volatile. As the FTC notes, “An investment that may be worth thousands of dollars on Tuesday could only be worth hundreds on Wednesday.” - **Resist pressure to buy right now.** Criminals often try to create a false sense of urgency around a supposedly red-hot cryptocurrency. - **Check out any dealer** in virtual currency options or futures contracts before you buy. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has a tool for [running an online background check](https://www.cftc.gov/LearnAndProtect "run a background check on any dealer"). It’s not a good idea to invest in or trade virtual currencies on the advice of someone you’ve only dealt with online, whether it’s an anonymous tipster on social media or a supposed romantic partner. - **Do your research.** Thoroughly research any virtual currency platform or digital wallet provider before providing any credit card information, wiring money or disclosing sensitive personal data. - **Carefully read any agreement** with a digital wallet provider. They likely will not accept responsibility for replacing your money if it is stolen, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau warns. Note: Banks don't accept responsibility for replacing your money if you were somehow connected to the theft through manipulation. - **If you own crypto, never share your “private keys”** — the long letter-and-number codes that enable you to access your virtual currency — with anyone. Keep them in a secure place. ### What to do if you’ve been targeted - **Submit a report** to the FBI [Internet Crime Complaint Center](https://www.ic3.gov/Home/ComplaintChoice "fbi ic3 contact") (IC3) or contact your local FBI Field Office and provide as much information about the transaction as possible. - **Report it to your local police**. If they resist taking your report, persist so you have a record of the loss. - **File a report** through the [FTC’s online form](https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/ "report fraud to the ftc") at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. - **For support and guidance**, the trained fraud specialists at the free [AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline](https://www.aarp.org/money/scams-fraud/helpline/ "AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline"), 877 -908-3360, can share information on what to do next and how to avoid future scams.
