Question: 10/2/2019 I have a patient with a shrimp allergy that is avoiding all shellfish. He really enjoys sushi and is wondering if imitation crab is safe. I don't see any direct information on what is in imitation crab and if shellfish products are used at all to determine if this is a safe option for my patient. Thank you for your help in this scenario. Answer: I do not know what "imitation crab" means. In general, some of the white fishes have been used to make imitation crab - Pollock for example. I have not been able to identify an industry standard that defines what can or cannot be called imitation crab. If a patient is going to consider imitation crab then they will have to seek out the ingredient list and understand what or what is not in the food. I hope this is helpful. Andrew Murphy, MD, FAAAAI
