Doctors are warning Americans that we are drinking way too much of it. How much is too much? Let's just say that most of us drink this much daily and a high percentage of us drink a lot more than the recommended daily amount. Researchers found more than 400 milligrams of caffeine per day was linked to people's heart rate and blood pressure slowly increasing over time. The team thinks the effect of caffeine on increased heart rate and blood pressure causes wear and tear on blood vessels and the heart, weakening and damaging them. ## My caffeine story I can speak to this situation from a personal basis. Last year I noticed that my blood pressure was spiking very high during the day. At first I dismissed it as stress or perhaps too much salt, it never occurred to me that my beloved coffee was to blame. You see like most people I start the day with a cup of coffee to shake the night cobwebs off, then I have one for the ride into the show and drink that during the morning in a Yeti tumbler. Later in the afternoon before going to the gym or as a "pick me up" I would stop at Dunks or Starbucks for a medium cold-brew iced coffee. When I added up all the coffee I was consuming during the day, I was well over 400 milligrams of caffeine. After a life time of drinking that much coffee, it had caught up with me in a big way. High blood pressure and the jitters. It was time for a change, so since last October I have become a decaf coffee drinker and you know what? It was very easy to make the change, and the drop in blood pressure was almost immediate too. Sure, there are times when I will have a regular coffee, but it makes me a bit jittery and not really worth it. I have lots of energy and don't really miss the caffeine, and now there's scientific proof that you can have too much of a good thing.
