The hike is marked as a loop, but in reality, it’s more of a makeshift one. It starts at the Master Armorer’s House in Lower Town, Harpers Ferry. The **trail is** **mostly** **uphill with steep and rocky sections**. The hike from the Master Armorer’s House to the Maryland Heights Overlook is 4.5 miles round trip. It’s a strenuous hike, but the **breathtaking views of the historic Harpers Ferry** are absolutely worth the effort. **Parking Tip:** Parking spots near the trailhead or in Lower Town are limited. If you plan to hike on a weekend, consider arriving early. If the parking spots near the trailhead are full, consider parking at the Visitor Center (39.3166667, -77.75638888888889) and using the free shuttle to Lower Town. There’s more to Harpers Ferry than just the hike, though. With so **many outdoor activities, cozy restaurants, local shops, and museums**, this town is **perfect for a weekend escape from Washington, DC**. I always recommend it to my friends and family who are looking for fun things but don’t have to travel far from DC. Annapolis Rock - Boonsboro, Maryland   - **Location:** Boonsboro, Maryland - **Hike Length:** 5 Miles (out-and-back) - **Difficulty:** Moderate - **Dogs allowed:** Yes, on leash - **Fee:** FREE - **Get Directions:** [click here](https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Current+Location/39.53556,-77.60382) - **Travel Time:** 1 hour from Washington, DC Annapolis Rock is not simply a hike; it’s also a great spot for backcountry camping! Most of the trail follows the famous white-blazed Appalachian Trail, making it one of the more iconic **hiking trails near Washington, DC.** The first mile is steep but eventually levels out, rewarding you with peaceful forest views along the way. Near the summit, you’ll come across a designated backcountry campground where you can rest, make a warm meal, and spend the night. The overlook at Annapolis Rock offers stunning views of the Greenbriar Lake and Cumberland Valley, especially during peak foliage, making this one of the **best fall hikes near DC.** It’s also popular among those looking for **dog-friendly hikes near D.C.** with a bit of adventure. This scenic route combines the **River Trail**, known for its rock scrambling along the Potomac, with the **Matildaville Trail**, which passes historic ruins of an 18th-century canal town. The trail offers stunning views of the falls and the river gorge, especially when the water is high. Expect rocky sections and narrow paths close to the edge, so proper hiking shoes and caution are recommended. #### Billy Goat Trail - Potomac, Maryland     - **Location:** Potomac, Maryland - **Hike Length:** 8 Miles (out-and-back) - **Difficulty:** Strenuous - **Dogs allowed:** Yes - **Fee:** \$20 entrance fee to the park - **Get Directions:** [click here](https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Current+Location/38.98184,-77.22664) - **Travel Time**: 30 minutes from Washington, DC **On the Maryland side**, the Billy Goat Trail runs parallel to the Potomac River and offers rugged terrain and dramatic views that mirror the Virginia side’s River Trail. The trail is **divided into three sections totaling about 8 miles**, allowing hikers to choose a route based on their skill level. - **Section A** is the most challenging at 1.75 miles. It is rated difficult and includes intense rock scrambling. **Dogs are not allowed** in this section. **Trail closures are common**, especially after heavy rain or due to hazardous conditions, so be sure to check the **[trail status](https://www.nps.gov/choh/planyourvisit/conditions.htm)** before heading out. - **Section B** is 1.4 miles and is typically considered moderate and **dog-friendly**, but it is currently **CLOSED** as of this update. - **Section C** is the easiest of the three at 1.6 miles. The trail runs along the Potomac River, offering great views from riverside overlooks, and leads to the charming Scott’s Run Waterfall, which is especially beautiful after a good rain. While some parts of the trail are steep and rocky, the overall hike is moderate and a **perfect day hike near Washington, DC**. The preserve covers 336 acres and has a network of interconnected trails, so you can take a shorter loop or make it a longer hike for more challenges. It’s also one of the **favorite dog-friendly hikes near DC** since leashed dogs are welcome. With the combination of wooded trails, river views, and different trail options, Scott’s Run is a great nature getaway just outside of DC. ### 6\. Bear's Den - Bluemont, Virginia   - **Location:** Bluemont, Virginia - **Hike Length:** 1.7 Miles (out and back) - **Difficulty:** Easy - **Dogs allowed:** Yes, on a leash - **Fee:** FREE - **Get Directions:** [click here](https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Current+Location/39.11546,-77.84717) - **Travel Time:** 1 hour from Washington, DC If you’re looking for a nice, relaxing day of hiking with beautiful views, this is the spot for you! Bears Den is **one of the best hikes near Washington, DC**, for sunset. This easy 1.7-mile out-and-back trail provides a leisurely hike through the **lush forest to panoramic views of the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains**. The trailhead has a large parking lot, but this hike can be busy on weekends, so it’s best to arrive early! There are also several breweries and wineries in the area if you want to end your adventure day with some drinks and food. ### 7\. Follow the well-marked trail up the mountain, traversing a few easy stream crossings along the way. The terrain gets rocky as you get closer to the summit. Once you are at the top of Buzzard Rock, you’ll find large, **exposed rock formations that offer breathtaking views** of the Shenandoah Valley. **Parking Tip:** Be aware that the parking area is small and can fill up quickly. To avoid any issues, arrive early in the morning or start your hike from the Signal Knob Trailhead, where there is more parking available. Don’t park on the street or on private property\! ### 8\. Theodore Roosevelt Island - Arlington, Virginia - **Region:** Arlington, Virginia - **Hike Length:** 1.8 Miles (loop) - **Difficulty:** Easy - **Dogs allowed:** Yes, on a leash - **Fee:** FREE - **Get Directions:** [click here](https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Current+Location/38.89604,-77.06679) - **Travel Time:** 15 minutes from Washington, DC This island, located in the Potomac River between Washington, DC, and Arlington, Virginia, offers a relaxing break from the hustle and bustle. Of all the hikes on this list, it’s the **closest scenic hike near DC**. Though the island was naturally formed, it didn’t always look as it does now. The habitats were created post-Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and each trail is named after the habitat it passes through. These trails total about 3 miles in length and are perfect for walking or running. To get to the island, you must walk across a bridge over the Potomac River. It is also possible to kayak along the river. **Parking Tip:** There is a small parking lot at the bridge, but it can fill up quickly, so arrive early or prepare to park in a metered parking spot. Do not park on the grass; you will be ticketed\! ### 9\. Whitehouse Overlook - Paris, Virginia   - **Location:** Paris, Virginia - **Hike Length:** 4.9 Miles (loop) - **Difficulty:** Moderate - **Dogs allowed:** Yes, on a leash - **Fee:** YES - **Get Directions:** [click here](https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Current+Location/38.99237,-77.96808) - **Travel Time:** 1\.10 hour from Washington, DC Offering multiple viewpoints and traversing several trails, this hike is a great way to experience the park and is one of the **must-do hikes near Washington, DC**! Since it’s located in Sky Meadows State Park, stop by the visitor’s center or the kiosk at the trailhead to grab a map to help navigate the trails. Start your hike from the gravel parking lot and take the South Ridge Trail. Continue along the trail until you reach the Appalachian Trail. Hike through wide meadows on the AT before reaching the Ambassador Whitehouse Trail. Follow this trail to get to the first viewpoint, Whitehouse Overlook. Here, you can take a break and enjoy the view. Continue down the trail to the Piedmont Overlook, followed by the Lower Overlook. From there, follow the trail down to return to the parking lot and complete the loop. The trail is well-maintained, clearly marked, and mostly free of rocks and roots. ### 10\. Sugarloaf Mountain - Barnesville, Maryland   - **Location:** Barnesville, Maryland - **Hike Length:** 7 miles (loop) - **Difficulty:** Moderate - **Dogs allowed:** Yes, on a leash - **Fee:** YES - **Get Directions:** [click here](https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Current+Location/39.26023,-77.39052) - **Travel Time:** 1 hour from Washington, DC Though there are several different trails to reach Sugarloaf Mountain’s summit, this particular route is one of the best! Rated moderately challenging, this long loop goes clockwise through forests and up inclines, offering stunning views of the Monocacy Valley. Starting from the eastern parking lot, follow the blue-blazed trail as it climbs the first incline onward into the woods. The trail is well-marked and maintained, but you’ll encounter rocks and roots, so be sure to wear hiking shoes. While the majority of the hike is relatively flat, there are some steeper inclines, especially when approaching the summit. Bring your packed lunch to enjoy at the summit while taking in the views, and then continue on to complete the loop. While there is plenty of parking, this hike can be busy on weekends, so it’s best to arrive early if you want to take the trail yourself. ### 11\. Raven Rocks - Bluemont, Virginia     - **Location:** Bluemont, Virginia - **Hike Length:** 5.3 Miles (out-and-back) - **Difficulty:** Strenuous - **Terrain:** Rocky, with steep ups and downs - **Dogs allowed:** Yes, on leash - **Fee:** Free - **Get Directions:** [Click here](https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Current+Location/39.11659,-77.85256) - ****Travel Time:**** 1 hour from Washington, DC This trail is part of the “**Roller Coaste**r” section of the Appalachian Trail, and it definitely lives up to the name. Expect a good leg workout with **steep climbs and descents** almost the whole way, but the payoff is worth it. The overlook at Raven Rocks gives you sweeping views of the valley and surrounding ridges. It’s especially beautiful during fall and a great choice if you’re looking for **a longer, more challenging hike near D.C.** The trail is rocky from the start, so wear shoes with good grip. I also recommend trekking poles if you like a little extra support on the way down. There are **no water sources or restrooms** at the trailhead, so be sure to bring plenty of water and anything else you might need before you hit the trail. **Parking Tip:** Parking is limited right at the trailhead on Pine Grove Road. It fills up fast on weekends, so I usually try to get there early.If it’s full, there’s a commuter lot off Route 7, but be extra cautious if you’re crossing the road on foot. ### 12\. Pyrite Mine Loop Trail – Prince William Forest Park, Virginia   - **Location:** Triangle, Virginia - **Hike Length:** 7.6 Miles (loop) - **Difficulty:** Moderate - **Terrain:** Forested, with dirt paths, boardwalks, and a few rocky spots - **Dogs allowed:** Yes, on leash - **Fee:** \$20 per vehicle (valid for 7 days) - **Get Directions:** [Click here](https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Current+Location/38.55976,-77.3489) - ****Travel Time:**** 50 minutes from Washington, DC If you’re looking for a quiet, longer **trail near D.C.**, this one’s a good pick. The **Pyrite Mine Loop** takes you through peaceful woods, with plenty of shade and some creek views along the way. Toward the end of the loop, there’s a **small waterfall** just off the trail, it’s a nice little reward before you finish up. The trail is well-marked, and parking is usually easy at the Pine Grove lot.
