Can a 300 lb Person Parachute?
Can You Skydive with Medical Conditions?
What Disqualifies You from Skydiving?
Key TakeawaysÂ
Skydiving is more accessible than many people assume. In most cases, the main requirements are being at least 18 years old, meeting the dropzone’s weight limits, and being in generally good health with enough mobility to safely participate. While some medical conditions, physical limitations, and higher weight ranges may require extra review, they do not always prevent someone from jumping. Many skydiving restrictions are evaluated on a case-by-case basis – talk with your doctor and contact the dropzone to discuss your specific situation.
You’ve been looking into skydiving, and now the real questions are popping up: Is there an age limit for skydiving? How much can you weigh to skydive? Are there skydiving health restrictions?
These are all excellent questions, and they play a big role in deciding whether skydiving is something you can, or should, do. The good news is that skydiving is far more accessible than most people expect. You don’t need to be a super athlete, and there’s a lot of flexibility when it comes to age, body type, and experience level.
Below, we’ll walk through skydiving requirements, what might disqualify you from skydiving, and what to expect.
What Are the Requirements for Skydiving?
At a basic level, skydiving requirements are pretty straightforward. You must be at least 18 years old, within the dropzone’s weight limits, and in generally good health with enough mobility to safely complete the jump. From there, some factors are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, especially when it comes to medical conditions and mobility.
Age & Identification
The vast majority of skydiving dropzones in the US require that you are
at least 18 years old
to skydive. This is a hard rule with no exceptions, even with parental consent.Â
There is
no maximum age limit
. As long as you’re in generally good health and have reasonable mobility, skydiving can be an option well into your later years. It’s not uncommon to see people in their 70s, 80s, or even 90s making tandem jumps. Take Sky Granny, Ambassador
Anna Mae
, for example.
No matter your age, you’ll need to bring a valid, government-issued photo ID when you arrive.
Skydiving Weight Limits
Every dropzone has a skydiving weight limit for both
tandem students
and those
learning to skydive
. These limits aren’t arbitrary. They’re based on both equipment ratings and overall safety. At Wisconsin Skydiving Center, our maximum weight limit is
260 lbs for tandem students
and
200 lbs for AFF students
. Height and overall proportions are also taken into account.
Skydiving gear is certified by the The Federal Aviation Administration under a Technical Standard Order (TSO), meaning it has been tested to safely operate within specific weight limits, even in worst-case scenarios like deploying a parachute at
terminal velocity
. That total weight includes you, your instructor, and all equipment, and it cannot exceed the tandem system’s rating.
As weight increases, so does terminal velocity. This results in faster speeds, harder parachute openings, and more physical demand on both the gear and the instructor. Heavier loads also require more strength and control during landing, especially when flaring the parachute.
For those learning to skydive, weight limits also matter because the equipment must be properly matched to the student. The harness/container system has its own certification requirements, and the parachutes themselves must be appropriately sized for the jumper’s weight. It’s not just about whether someone can wear the gear. The equipment has to fit correctly and be suitable for safe flight and landing.Â
Can a 300 lb Person Parachute?
Most dropzones cannot accommodate 300 lbs because of equipment limits, instructor limits, harness fit, and aircraft balance considerations.
Skydiving puts additional wear on equipment and increases the physical demand on instructors. Surcharges reflect that added strain, as well as the experience required for instructors handling higher weight loads. At Wisconsin Skydiving Center, we add:
$50 surcharge for 200–230 lbs
$100 surcharge for 230–260 lbs
Can You Skydive with Medical Conditions?
You do need to be in generally good health to skydive, but having a
medical condition
doesn’t automatically disqualify you.
Conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes are often manageable, though we may ask a few additional questions. More serious conditions may require clearance from your doctor before jumping.
If you’re unsure, the best approach is:
1. Talk to your doctor
2. Call the dropzone and explain your situation
Many situations are handled on a case-by-case basis, and there isn’t always a simple yes-or-no answer. It’s important to be honest about your health. That allows instructors to make informed decisions and keep everything as safe as possible.
Physical Requirements
You don’t need to be in peak athletic condition, but you do need a baseline level of functional mobility. Here’s what this looks like in practice:
Boarding the plane:
You’ll need to crouch and maneuver into position inside the aircraft
Freefall position:
You’ll be guided into an
arch position
, which requires some flexibility
Exit:
You’ll move into position at the door with your instructor
Landing:
You’ll need to lift your legs and hold them up for
landing
, which uses core strength
That’s it. It’s not a workout, but you do need to be able to move your body and follow instructions.
We can also accommodate a wide range of
physical conditions
. People who are paraplegic, amputees, or visually impaired have all successfully completed tandem skydives. Mobility may change how the jump is performed, but it doesn’t necessarily prevent you from participating.
If you’re planning to learn to skydive, the requirements become more demanding. You’ll need to:
Move confidently in and around the aircraft
Perform controlled body movements in freefall
Have the strength and mobility to execute emergency procedures
Steer and flare your parachute
Perform a proper parachute landing fall (PLF)
What Disqualifies You from Skydiving?
There’s no single list of automatic disqualifiers, but the most common limiting factors are:
Being under 18
Exceeding the weight limit
Having a serious, uncontrolled medical condition
Being unable to follow basic physical instructions (like lifting your legs for landing)
Outside of that, many situations are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Weather & Safety Rules
What conditions are needed to skydive? Skydiving is heavily regulated, and safety always comes first. We operate under FAA regulations (FAR Part 105) and follow
USPA
(United States Parachute Association) guidelines.
The
weather
also plays a major role. Some conditions you cannot skydive in include:
Low cloud ceilings
Excessive cloud coverage
High winds
Even if everything else lines up perfectly, the weather can delay or cancel jumps. It’s just part of the sport.
Your Jump is Waiting!
Skydiving is far more accessible than people expect, and many of the “limitations” people worry about aren’t actually barriers. As long as you meet the basic age requirement, fall within weight limits, and are in reasonable health, there’s a good chance you’re eligible.
Check out our skydiving FAQs
for more information, talk to your doctor,
contact the dropzone
, and get real answers based on
your
situation. Your jump might be a lot more possible than you think.

> **Key Takeaways**
> *Skydiving is more accessible than many people assume. In most cases, the main requirements are being at least 18 years old, meeting the dropzone’s weight limits, and being in generally good health with enough mobility to safely participate. While some medical conditions, physical limitations, and higher weight ranges may require extra review, they do not always prevent someone from jumping. Many skydiving restrictions are evaluated on a case-by-case basis – talk with your doctor and contact the dropzone to discuss your specific situation.*

## What Are the Requirements for Skydiving?
At a basic level, skydiving requirements are pretty straightforward. You must be at least 18 years old, within the dropzone’s weight limits, and in generally good health with enough mobility to safely complete the jump. From there, some factors are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, especially when it comes to medical conditions and mobility.
## Age & Identification
The vast majority of skydiving dropzones in the US require that you are **at least 18 years old** to skydive. This is a hard rule with no exceptions, even with parental consent.
There is **no maximum age limit**. As long as you’re in generally good health and have reasonable mobility, skydiving can be an option well into your later years. It’s not uncommon to see people in their 70s, 80s, or even 90s making tandem jumps. Take Sky Granny, Ambassador [Anna Mae](https://wisconsinskydivingcenter.com/blog/catching-up-with-anna-mae/), for example.
No matter your age, you’ll need to bring a valid, government-issued photo ID when you arrive.
## Skydiving Weight Limits
Every dropzone has a skydiving weight limit for both [tandem students](https://wisconsinskydivingcenter.com/tandem-skydiving-wisconsin/) and those [learning to skydive](https://wisconsinskydivingcenter.com/learn-to-skydive/). These limits aren’t arbitrary. They’re based on both equipment ratings and overall safety. At Wisconsin Skydiving Center, our maximum weight limit is **260 lbs for tandem students** and **200 lbs for AFF students**. Height and overall proportions are also taken into account.
Skydiving gear is certified by the The Federal Aviation Administration under a Technical Standard Order (TSO), meaning it has been tested to safely operate within specific weight limits, even in worst-case scenarios like deploying a parachute at [terminal velocity](https://wisconsinskydivingcenter.com/blog/how-fast-do-you-fall-when-skydiving/).
The equipment has to fit correctly and be suitable for safe flight and landing.
## Can a 300 lb Person Parachute?
Most dropzones cannot accommodate 300 lbs because of equipment limits, instructor limits, harness fit, and aircraft balance considerations.
Skydiving puts additional wear on equipment and increases the physical demand on instructors. Surcharges reflect that added strain, as well as the experience required for instructors handling higher weight loads. At Wisconsin Skydiving Center, we add:
- \$50 surcharge for 200–230 lbs
- \$100 surcharge for 230–260 lbs

## Can You Skydive with Medical Conditions?
You do need to be in generally good health to skydive, but having a [medical condition](https://wisconsinskydivingcenter.com/blog/medical-reasons-not-to-skydive/) doesn’t automatically disqualify you.
Conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes are often manageable, though we may ask a few additional questions. More serious conditions may require clearance from your doctor before jumping.
If you’re unsure, the best approach is:
1\. Talk to your doctor
2\. Call the dropzone and explain your situation
Many situations are handled on a case-by-case basis, and there isn’t always a simple yes-or-no answer. It’s important to be honest about your health. That allows instructors to make informed decisions and keep everything as safe as possible.
## Physical Requirements
You don’t need to be in peak athletic condition, but you do need a baseline level of functional mobility. Here’s what this looks like in practice:
- **Boarding the plane:** You’ll need to crouch and maneuver into position inside the aircraft
- **Freefall position:** You’ll be guided into an [arch position](https://wisconsinskydivingcenter.com/blog/4-exercises-to-improve-your-skydiving-arch-pose/), which requires some flexibility
- **Exit:** You’ll move into position at the door with your instructor
- **Landing:** You’ll need to lift your legs and hold them up for [landing](https://wisconsinskydivingcenter.com/blog/skydiving-landing-like/), which uses core strength
That’s it. It’s not a workout, but you do need to be able to move your body and follow instructions.
We can also accommodate a wide range of [physical conditions](https://wisconsinskydivingcenter.com/blog/can-you-skydive-with-a-disability/). People who are paraplegic, amputees, or visually impaired have all successfully completed tandem skydives. Mobility may change how the jump is performed, but it doesn’t necessarily prevent you from participating.
If you’re planning to learn to skydive, the requirements become more demanding. You’ll need to:
- Move confidently in and around the aircraft
- Perform controlled body movements in freefall
- Have the strength and mobility to execute emergency procedures
- Steer and flare your parachute
- Perform a proper parachute landing fall (PLF)
## What Disqualifies You from Skydiving?
There’s no single list of automatic disqualifiers, but the most common limiting factors are:
- Being under 18
- Exceeding the weight limit
- Having a serious, uncontrolled medical condition
- Being unable to follow basic physical instructions (like lifting your legs for landing)
Outside of that, many situations are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
## Weather & Safety Rules
What conditions are needed to skydive? Skydiving is heavily regulated, and safety always comes first. We operate under FAA regulations (FAR Part 105) and follow [USPA](http://uspa.org/) (United States Parachute Association) guidelines.
The [weather](https://wisconsinskydivingcenter.com/blog/how-will-weather-affect-my-skydiving-day/) also plays a major role. Some conditions you cannot skydive in include:
- Low cloud ceilings
- Excessive cloud coverage
- High winds
Even if everything else lines up perfectly, the weather can delay or cancel jumps. It’s just part of the sport.

## Your Jump is Waiting\!
Skydiving is far more accessible than people expect, and many of the “limitations” people worry about aren’t actually barriers. As long as you meet the basic age requirement, fall within weight limits, and are in reasonable health, there’s a good chance you’re eligible.
[Check out our skydiving FAQs](https://wisconsinskydivingcenter.com/tandem-skydiving-wisconsin/faqs/) for more information, talk to your doctor, [contact the dropzone](https://wisconsinskydivingcenter.com/contact/), and get real answers based on *your* situation.
