| Boilerpipe Text | Singapore, the âLion Cityâ is filled with a slew of nature trails and delightful camping spots that would take your breath away. Should you yearn to roast marshmallows over a campfire, sing songs and make your BBQ sauce, then Singapore is the perfect place to pitch your tent and settle down for a truly memorable camping experience. Here is how you should approach the topic of âhow to camp in Singapore?â
Who is permitted to camp in Singapore?
Understand that only Singaporeans, permanent residents and foreign nationals holding a recognized residence permit will be allowed to pack their bags and head off to camp. Further, a camping permit is a prerequisite when contemplating such an escape that will involve overnight stays. Additionally, when pitching your tent, it is a must to do so while leaving a minimum distance of 5 meters between yours and that of your neighbourâs tent.
Applying for a camping permit
Online applications are the easiest and quickest means of obtaining a camping permit or you can apply for one through an AXS machine but this must be done at least 3 days in advance in the event your campsite is Pasir Ris Park, Pulau Ubin, West Coast Park or East Coast Park. Areas such as Lazarus Island and Pulau Hantu are free to camp but before your trip, you will need to have with you a valid Temporary Occupation License. The said License can be applied for at the Singapore Land Authority complete with the required information concerning your trip at least 7 days before your date of departure.
Packing list
When it comes to a suitable tent, it is wise to factor in the weather in Singapore which can be windy with the risk of the odd shower at night. Thus, metal stakes are a must as these will help secure the tent while a rain fly will be needed in instances where the tent you opt for is not waterproof. Furthermore, sleeping bags are outstanding and in turn, good ways to beat the heat on a warm night. However, a foam mat works outstandingly well too in the event you want to rough it out. Staying hydrated is key when out and about and depending on the number of campers, the right amount of clean, drinking water bottles will have to be purchased. Also, camping lanterns and torchlights can be a great source of direction as relying on your phoneâs flashlight at all times is never wise. Added to this, be sure to bring along a portable charger or power bank so that whatever electronic gadget you have will not run out of battery power. Next up is mosquito repellant which can help you stay well clear of nasty bites, especially come nightfall. Importantly, go over the food list with a fine-tooth comb including only what is necessary and do not forget to pack in some light nibbles such as sandwiches, chips and fresh fruit. Be mindful that the location you choose to be based at must be left as it was so that like-minded campers can enjoy similar experiences and for this, you will need to have a good amount of trash bags and air-tight containers to store away leftovers.
The destination
Take note of the facilities made available at the camping destinations of Jelutong and Mamam which are found on the island of Pulau Ubin. With many an opportunity to go bird watching and experience an abundance of wildlife, the island is both beautiful and breathtaking. However, of the two mentioned areas, Jelutong is the only area where campfires are allowed. For those enthused about marine life, then it is recommended that you beeline in the direction of Pulau Hantu which is made up of swimming lagoons, mangroves and reefs that are perfect to suit up and go diving. Surround yourself with the cool breeze and vistas of swaying palms that are very much a part of the appeal associated with East Coast Beach. With a 15 km stretch to avail of where time can be spent jogging, cycling and camping within Areas D and G respectively, East Coast Beach is where family outings and outings with your best mates are celebrated and remembered. The camping spots are blessed with barbecue pits, outdoor showers and clean toilets. In the event you are based at Ascott Orchard Singapore which is one of the providers of
Orchard Road serviced apartments
, then accessing East Coast Beach can be done so within 17 minutes. |
