Readable Markdown	The BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Disaster On April 20, 2010, the BP Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded, tragically claiming the lives of 11 people and causing the worst oil spill in United States history. More than 200 million gallons of oil spilled over the 87 days it took to finally cap the well. The disaster wreaked havoc on the Gulf of Mexico and exposed the dangers of offshore oil and gas drilling. This catastrophe revealed critical inadequacies in safety, regulation and oversight in the offshore oil drilling industry. Oceana is fighting to stop the expansion of offshore drilling.
