Grawp pulls a Big Damn Heroes by picking up Dolores Umbridge by the scruff of her pink jumper and lifting her to eye level so he can stare at her, right when she's holding Harry and Hermione at wandpoint and nearly strangling one of the local centaurs with some conjured ropes. He eventually lets her go, not through her own efforts, but when he gets bored of the centaurs shooting him, at which point said centaurs carry her off to do... something. Report |

*"You have waylaid all his other plans. Now, as a petulant child, he will destroy the game board rather than admit defeat. Be ready for anything. He still believes himself a god, and gods do not fall gracefully."*
— **Solas**, on the Elder One, *[Dragon Age: Inquisition](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VideoGame/DragonAgeInquisition "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VideoGame/DragonAgeInquisition")*
It's over. The [Evil Plan](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EvilPlan "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EvilPlan") has been thwarted. Maybe [The Hero](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheHero "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheHero") found a way to disable the [Doomsday Device](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DoomsdayDevice "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DoomsdayDevice") and now stands triumphant upon the useless husk of the villain's master stroke or they successfully beat the villain to the [MacGuffin](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MacGuffin "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MacGuffin") and kept it out of their hands. In any event all that planning and effort in the pursuit of personal glory has been stolen and come to naught. But it will not end like this, their eyes [dilating into beads of raw hate](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RedEyesTakeWarning "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RedEyesTakeWarning") and their once well-groomed hair now [frayed and wild](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MadnessMakeover "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MadnessMakeover"), perhaps with a good bit of furniture smashing around their lair to really sell it. The meticulous, well-spoken, and sly master of evildoing has slipped into a [raving and savage cur](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/UnstoppableRage "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/UnstoppableRage") that will either seize [any semblance of victory](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WeWinBecauseYouDidnt "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WeWinBecauseYouDidnt") they can or ensuring the one who undid their grand plan [is made to pay if it's the last thing they do](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TakingYouWithMe "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TakingYouWithMe"). Hell hath no fury like a villain scorned and they *will not* be denied this day.
This is the tendency of relatively calm and composed villains to lose their cool over the course of the story. Usually happens to arrogant [Chessmaster](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheChessmaster "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheChessmaster")\-type villains (especially if said villain is a [Smug Snake](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SmugSnake "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SmugSnake")), as control of the situation slips from their grasp and things come up that they [Didn't See Coming](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DidntSeeThatComing "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DidntSeeThatComing"). Most notable when it happens towards the end of the story to show how pathetic the [Big Bad](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BigBad "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BigBad") is when things are not going exactly as planned ("[This Cannot Be\!](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ThisCannotBe "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ThisCannotBe")"). Especially apparent if they previously had [Creepy Monotone](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CreepyMonotone "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CreepyMonotone") or [Dissonant Serenity](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DissonantSerenity "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DissonantSerenity"), and [suddenly](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MoodWhiplash "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MoodWhiplash") start [Chewing the Scenery](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ChewingTheScenery "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ChewingTheScenery") (when they do this because their plan is *succeeding*, it is more of a case of [Drunk on the Dark Side](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DrunkOnTheDarkSide "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DrunkOnTheDarkSide")). [Dirty Cowards](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DirtyCoward "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DirtyCoward") also suffer from this, especially when they are cornered.
Similar to [Oh, Crap\!](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OhCrap "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OhCrap"), though the difference lies in that [Oh, Crap\!](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OhCrap "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OhCrap") moments involve a single moment where the character finds that they are screwed, while Villainous Breakdowns have them see it coming from miles away. The heroic counterpart is the [Heroic Safe Mode](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HeroicSafeMode "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HeroicSafeMode").
Note that this isn't necessarily an example of [Villain Decay](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainDecay "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainDecay"). On the contrary, some villains become much more terrifying and dangerous when their façade of cunning and civility crumbles. They might even end up dishing out a vicious [No-Holds-Barred Beatdown](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NoHoldsBarredBeatdown "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NoHoldsBarredBeatdown") to the Hero(es), engage in some [Cold-Blooded Torture](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ColdBloodedTorture "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ColdBloodedTorture") or, [goodness forbid](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DownerEnding "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DownerEnding"), drop the [Villain Ball](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainBall "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainBall") and [Just FINISH HIM Already](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CombatPragmatist "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CombatPragmatist") instead of playing around. It could even lead them to stop holding back their true nature and assuming their true form as the [Humanoid Abomination](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HumanoidAbomination "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HumanoidAbomination") they actually were. Thus, a Villainous Breakdown is frequently a trigger for a [One-Winged Angel](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OneWingedAngel "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OneWingedAngel") transformation. [Affably Evil](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AffablyEvil "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AffablyEvil") and [Faux Affably Evil](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FauxAffablyEvil "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FauxAffablyEvil") villains are prone to becoming far more terrifying and disturbing when they undergo one of these because their fairly *normal* personality serve to emphasize their breakdown. If the villain in question has been [Orcus on His Throne](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OrcusOnHisThrone "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OrcusOnHisThrone") up to this point then expect part of the breakdown to be finally willing to [take matters into their own hands](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainNoLongerIdle "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainNoLongerIdle"), demonstrating whatever capability they had otherwise kept sidelined in order to run things from behind or execute their plan with subtlety (with such instances usually being what allows the hero to finally deal the finishing blow to an antagonist who until then had successfully stayed out of the line of fire, their breaking point also serving as their fatal mistake). Villains who are not necessarily in a position to assume a [Frontline General](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FrontlineGeneral "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FrontlineGeneral") role even in the heat of their [Sanity Slippage](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SanitySlippage "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SanitySlippage") will likely instead order their closest aide to allocate every single resource at their disposal to eliminate their incessant thorn, even if such an order would make no sense at any other time.
A somewhat less common, but not exactly infrequent, form of breakdown results in the exact opposite reaction: the villain lapses into a [catatonic state](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TranquilFury "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TranquilFury") as the shock of their defeat robs them of their wits. Another form of breakdown occurs due to [Heel Realization](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HeelRealization "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HeelRealization") causing a [Villainous BSoD](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainousBSOD "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainousBSOD"). Yet another is the impotent flailing of a defeated villain, left with nothing without power.
The scale of the breakdown generally depends on the nature — and overall impressiveness — of the villain. A [Smug Snake](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SmugSnake "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SmugSnake"), being generally inclined to rate their own abilities higher than everyone around them anyway and less equipped to deal with setbacks, will usually break down more frequently and over relatively minor [spanners in the works](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SpannerInTheWorks "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SpannerInTheWorks"), with the resulting tantrum usually being less-than-impressive. A [Magnificent Bastard](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MagnificentBastard "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MagnificentBastard"), on the other hand, is already the type of villain who's not inclined to sweat the small stuff, and will usually respond to most setbacks fairly calmly; however, this merely means that if their plans suffer a particularly impressive implosion, then this will usually make their resulting breakdown all the more epic. Similarly, a relatively minor or small-scale villain may have a breakdown on the level of a temper tantrum or explosive [Cluster F-Bomb](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ClusterFBomb "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ClusterFBomb") rant; a major or larger scale villain, however, will frequently have a breakdown with potentially (and quite literally) [world-ending consequences](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OmnicidalManiac "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OmnicidalManiac"). As the old saying goes, "The bigger you are, the harder you fall."
In another type, the breakdown won't be one, sudden explosion, but a gradual progression of smaller, gradually increasing breakdowns happening over the course of the story. As their [Evil Plan](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EvilPlan "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EvilPlan") comes closer to failing or their plans fail again and again, they simply get worse and worse as the breakdown continues, until finally, they lose it completely. This normally happens in the buildup to the final confrontation. This can overlap with [Sanity Slippage](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SanitySlippage "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SanitySlippage"), where a character gradually becomes more and more insane as time goes on. And as a special treat, when the villain finally goes so crazy and bat-shit insane that he completely loses it, other characters tend to hit him with a [You're Insane\!](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/YoureInsane "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/YoureInsane").
Another type of breakdown is when the villain becomes extremely furious when either something happens that isn't part of his plan or his plans end up being ruined, or both. Once pissed off, they may lose their temper and say such phrases as "[Why Won't You Die?](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WhyWontYouDie "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WhyWontYouDie")", "I've had it with you!", "[You Monster\!](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/YouMonster "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/YouMonster")", "[I should've killed you when I had the chance\!](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IShouldHaveDoneThisYearsAgo "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IShouldHaveDoneThisYearsAgo")", or even "[This Is Unforgivable\!](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ThisIsUnforgivable "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ThisIsUnforgivable")". Either way, the villain will scream more and more at the other characters in fury (often in such a high pitch as to [sound like a girl (especially if they're male)](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ScreamsLikeALittleGirl "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ScreamsLikeALittleGirl")) before being bested by them. A string of [Kick the Dog](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/KickTheDog "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/KickTheDog") or [Bad Boss](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BadBoss "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BadBoss") moments is another subtle way of indicating this, if the villain had previously [displayed parent-like feelings toward their henchmen](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BenevolentBoss "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BenevolentBoss").
If the target of the villainous breakdown is *another villain*, then chances are this will result in an immediate [Evil vs. Evil](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EvilVsEvil "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EvilVsEvil") fight, wherein the first villain that is having the breakdown may suddenly [become significantly more dangerous](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TookALevelInBadass "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TookALevelInBadass") despite their [obvious inferiority to the second villain](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DavidVsGoliath "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DavidVsGoliath"), and suddenly turn the tide of the fight [in their favor](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/UnderdogsNeverLose "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/UnderdogsNeverLose"). Chances are by the time this happens, the heroes are defeated or incapable of continuing the fight, and the [villain saves the day](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainousRescue "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainousRescue") even if [entirely unintentional](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NiceJobFixingItVillain "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NiceJobFixingItVillain").
One specific variation appears in some [Video Games](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VideoGames "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VideoGames") where the main villain is able to broadcast messages to the player over the course of the story, and [they eventually lose it](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MissionControlIsOffItsMeds "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MissionControlIsOffItsMeds") and start broadcasting more and more desperate pleas/insults/bribes to the player as they get closer to them.
For [Anti Villains](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AntiVillain "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AntiVillain"), or ones with a [Freudian Excuse](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FreudianExcuse "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FreudianExcuse"), a breakdown can either play [Cry for the Devil](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CryForTheDevil "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CryForTheDevil") (if their breakdown is pathetic) or cement them on the far side of the [Moral Event Horizon](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MoralEventHorizon "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MoralEventHorizon") (if they went [Jumping Off the Slippery Slope](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope") during their breakdown). A subversion of this trope is [Graceful Loser](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GracefulLoser "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GracefulLoser").
Heroes have been known to suffer [similar](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HeroicBSOD "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HeroicBSOD") [breakdowns](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FreakOut "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FreakOut"), though (unless they are making a [Last Stand](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LastStand "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LastStand")) they are much less likely to die during one.
**Note that this is usually done in a climax and just the fact that one occurs is a pretty big spoiler, so read with caution.**
[Super-Trope](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SuperTrope "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SuperTrope") to [Villainous BSoD](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainousBSOD "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainousBSOD"). [Sister Trope](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SisterTrope "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SisterTrope") to [Rage Breaking Point](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RageBreakingPoint "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RageBreakingPoint") (and can often overlap). Compare the [Villainous RRoD](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainousRROD "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainousRROD"), which is where physical overexertion causes the bad guy's body to start falling apart. Can overlap with [Identity Breakdown](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IdentityBreakdown "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IdentityBreakdown"), if the trigger of the villain's breakdown are issues or revelations regarding who or what they are.
[Not to Be Confused with](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/JustForFun/NotToBeConfusedWith "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/JustForFun/NotToBeConfusedWith") [Broken Heel](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BrokenHeel "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BrokenHeel"), which is a literal application of the term.

Guy is not only in emotional pain, already mourning having alienated God, but is also deeply resentful about said god disregarding his opinion and sacrifices, as well as feeling shame and rage about his ordeal.
Music
- *[Gorillaz](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Music/Gorillaz "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Music/Gorillaz")*: Driven by greed and desperation, psychotic bassist Murdoc slowly became more unhinged with the Plastic Beach arc. He rants and raves aimlessly in his radio broadcasts and seems to be [loosing his grasp on reality,](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SanitySlippage "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SanitySlippage") and he no longer bothers to hide his criminal activity and blatant abuse of his ["friend"](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VitriolicBestBuds "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VitriolicBestBuds") 2D. The 'villain' term might be a little iffy, as Murdoc's still more of a [Nominal Hero](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NominalHero "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NominalHero") than anything, but he's definitely got some decay going.
- The sadistic autocrat in [Judas Priest](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Music/JudasPriest "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Music/JudasPriest")'s "Tyrant", who starts out as a ranting megalomaniac and becomes more barbaric as the song rolls along, until in the final verse he senselessly [has](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BadBoss "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BadBoss") *[all his own soldiers](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BadBoss "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BadBoss")* [executed](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BadBoss "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BadBoss"). - Happens twice near the end of the original studio recording of *[Starlight Express](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/StarlightExpress "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/StarlightExpress")*:
- Electra has a very musical one in "No Comeback" before he exits.
- Control screams, "ENGINES MUST OBEY CONTROL! ENGINES MUST OBEY CONTROL! DO WHAT YOU'RE TOLD!", only to be rebuffed by all the trains and carriages with a "SHUT IT!" in unison.

**Ghost Johnson**: Mommy! Daddy! GET ME MORE EPIC GAMER VAPE JUICE OR ELSE I WILL *KILL MR. MINECRAAAFT\!*
Pinball
- In *[Attack from Mars](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Pinball/AttackFromMars "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Pinball/AttackFromMars")*, the commander of the Martians remains a [Smug Snake](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SmugSnake "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SmugSnake") for nearly the entire way through, even as the Earthlings are destroying key ships, stealing the remaining fleet, and attacking Mars directly with the Martian Mothership. However, once it becomes clear Mars is in real danger of [planetary annihilation](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EarthShatteringKaboom "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EarthShatteringKaboom") at the hands of the Earthlings, the commander, who had been doing nothing but [mock the player character and Earth's military forces](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EvilGloating "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EvilGloating") prior, gets increasingly desperate, even begging to be friends with the Earthlings (though he doesn't sound the least bit genuine), until Mars is actually destroyed. [Zigzagged](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ZigzaggedTrope "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ZigzaggedTrope") in that the commander [escapes his planet's destruction](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainExitStageLeft "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainExitStageLeft") and regains his cool in the process.
Religion
- *[The Book of Mormon](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Literature/TheBookOfMormon "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Literature/TheBookOfMormon")*: Amalickiah's rise to power is characterized by clever plotting, persuasion, and ruthlessness. But when he learns that his armies have failed, because his opponent, Moroni, spent that time building and shoring up city defences, he breaks out into cursing God, and swears an oath to drink Moroni's blood.
Roleplay
- During the Trial To End All Days, AJ of *[AJCO](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Roleplay/AJCO "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Roleplay/AJCO")* was confident enough in her victory that she went so far as to insult both the prosecutor and the judge. However, when it became clear that she was going to be pronounced *guilty*, she revealed that she had [planted nukes](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CrazyPrepared "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CrazyPrepared") beneath the courtroom, fled the courts and activated the world-breaking device that then launched them all into a new world. Breaking down with style.
- *[Survival of the Fittest](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Roleplay/SurvivalOfTheFittest "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Roleplay/SurvivalOfTheFittest")*: [Maxwell Lombardi](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EvilBrit "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EvilBrit") has an epic one (complete with [laughter](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LaughingMad "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LaughingMad")!) in his final fight with Naoko Raidon which he does not survive.
**Maxwell Lombardi:** You... I have to admit, you're not the first guy on this island to seriously piss me off, but if there was a competition going on you'd of just won first fucking prize.
Tabletop Games
- *[Sentinels of the Multiverse](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/TabletopGame/SentinelsOfTheMultiverse "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/TabletopGame/SentinelsOfTheMultiverse")* has this in both mechanics and fluff:
- Mechanically, villains can "flip" to an alternate mode if certain conditions are met. In several cases, this represents this trope— do enough damage to the [near indestructible](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MadeOfIron "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MadeOfIron") Iron Legacy and he'll go to ["Motivated by Desperation"](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ThisCannotBe "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ThisCannotBe") where he backs off to heal himself, steal Kismet's artifact of power and she'll flip to "Deranged Miscreant" where she'll do massive damage until she gets it back, and if you win enough of Wager Master's games he flips to "Increased Stakes" where he [stops fucking around](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NotSoHarmlessVillain "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NotSoHarmlessVillain").
- In fluff, Baron Blade undergoes several of these over the course of the game as his plans for revenge blow up in his face, represented by his decks going from "high-tech mastermind" to "crazed killer" to "mutant who's so desperate for power he genetically engineered himself to the point it's killing him".
- [Ratigan's](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WesternAnimation/TheGreatMouseDetective "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WesternAnimation/TheGreatMouseDetective") famous breakdown is a gameplay element in *[Villainous](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/TabletopGame/VillainousRavensburger "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/TabletopGame/VillainousRavensburger")*. His initial Objective is to play the Robot Queen card in Buckingham Palace to take over London. If the Robot Queen is taken out of play, Ratigan is changed from "Ratigan the Greatest Mind" to "Ratigan the Rat". As "the Rat", Ratigan's Objective changes to ["Defeat Basil"](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Revenge "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Revenge").
Theatre
- Judas in *[Jesus Christ Superstar](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/JesusChristSuperstar "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/JesusChristSuperstar")*. Same as in [The Bible](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Literature/TheBible "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Literature/TheBible"), he is [Driven to Suicide](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DrivenToSuicide "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DrivenToSuicide") but the rage in his [My God, What Have I Done?](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MyGodWhatHaveIDone "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MyGodWhatHaveIDone") number lands it solidly here.
**Judas:** *You have murdered me! You have murdered me! Murdered! Murdered! Murdered! Murdered\!*
- In *[The Lion King (1997)](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/TheLionKing1997 "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/TheLionKing1997")*, Scar has this in ["The Madness of King Scar"](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainSong "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainSong"), where he imagines that he sees the ghost of Mufasa, his victim, everywhere.
- Though he's not really a villain per se, [Inspector Javert](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/InspectorJavert "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/InspectorJavert") gets a pretty [spectacular](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic") breakdown in *[Les Misérables](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/LesMiserables "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/LesMiserables")* because he doesn't understand why Valjean didn't kill him when he had every right to. The song is called "Javert's Suicide", if you're wondering how that turned out.
- Salieri from *[Mozart L'Opera Rock](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/MozartLOperaRock "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/MozartLOperaRock")*, notably in the showstopping "Le bien qui fait mal" number, which combines him going insane with jealousy with some intriguingly sadomasochistic lyrics ("it feels so good to sufffer", "real delights require torture", "I love having \[this insanity\] inside my skin", etc.) He's a special sort of guy.
- In the stage adaptation of *[One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Literature/OneFlewOverTheCuckoosNest "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Literature/OneFlewOverTheCuckoosNest")*, McMurphy spends most of the play trying to make this happen to Nurse Ratched.
- In *[Pippin](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/Pippin "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/Pippin")*, the Leading Player turns into a screaming maniac when Pippin refuses to perform the grand finale (in which Pippin is supposed to [set himself on fire](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SelfImmolation "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SelfImmolation")). The Leading Player orders the set struck, the lights out, the music stopped, and even Pippin's costume is taken away from him. None of this changes Pippin's mind.
- [William Shakespeare](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Creator/WilliamShakespeare "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Creator/WilliamShakespeare"):
- Claudius in *[Hamlet](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/Hamlet "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/Hamlet")* goes from a politically savvy, brilliant villain, to ending up in a religious crisis, to coming up with the worst poisoning scheme in literary history.
- *[Macbeth](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/Macbeth "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/Macbeth")* in Act 5. His wife gets it even worse:
*Out damned spot! Out, I say\!*
- Archetypal Machiavellian [Magnificent Bastard](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MagnificentBastard "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MagnificentBastard") [Richard III](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/RichardIII "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/RichardIII") goes through a breakdown just before the play's final battle, hallucinating that the ghosts of everyone whose deaths he's caused are visiting him and telling him to despair, and ultimately realizing that after everything he's done, the entire world (including himself) hates him utterly.
- When King Richard lashes out at a messenger bringing news of his enemy Buckingham... only the message turns out to be that Buckingham's army has been *defeated*.
- The breakdown for Richard starts somewhat earlier, when he is told that Richmond is coming to Britain to claim the throne. He goes off on a tirade about how *he's* the king, the throne isn't empty, and screw Richmond. He then threatens the messenger, who is one of his somewhat-loyal cronies, prompting said crony to immediately switch sides and work with Richmond as soon as he makes landfall.
- Iago in *[Othello](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/Othello "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/Othello")*, after spending the whole play being cold and composed, goes berserk with rage when [his wife blows the lid off his entire conspiracy.](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SpannerInTheWorks "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SpannerInTheWorks") He ends up murdering her in a rage with none of the subtlety he usually employs, gets caught, and is so utterly incensed and shattered by the fact *this* is what threw off his plans he takes a vow of silence out of pure spite until his execution.
- *[Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/SweeneyToddTheDemonBarberOfFleetStreet "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/SweeneyToddTheDemonBarberOfFleetStreet")* has a pretty epic one right in the middle of the play after the title character's first attempt at revenge on Judge Turpin goes awry. The result is the awesome "Epiphany" number that marks his transition from [Anti-Hero](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AntiHero "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AntiHero") to [Villain Protagonist](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainProtagonist "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainProtagonist").
- And it happens again at the end of the show when he finds out that the beggar woman he just murdered was his wife Lucy, that Mrs. Lovett knew she was alive the whole time, and that she lied to him. He promptly mourns dramatically, goes fake happy and kills Lovett in a psychotic rage, and then slips in a [Heroic BSoD](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HeroicBSOD "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HeroicBSOD") (or [Villainous BSoD](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainousBSOD "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainousBSOD")) as he cradles his wife's lifeless body, not even bothering to do anything as little Tobias comes and slits his throat.
- In *[Thrill Me](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/ThrillMe "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/ThrillMe")*, Richard has "Afraid". Richard paces his prison cell as he realizes that he's going to either hang or get life in prison.
- In *[Villains Tonight\!](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/VillainsTonight "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/VillainsTonight")*, Hades has been in one since his defeat in the original film, with the Underworld having lost almost all of its menace as a result.
- *[Wicked](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/Wicked "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Theatre/Wicked")*:
- The Wizard has a very quiet dignified one of these at the end when he learns that the Wicked Witch whom he believes was successfully assassinated on his orders was actually his daughter. He sinks to the ground completely ignoring both his ally and the returned and angry Glinda for a long while.
- Elphaba (said Wicked Witch) has a mind-blowing breakdown in the song ["No Good Deed"](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished"), as she thinks her boyfriend Fiyero has been tortured to death while she couldn't do anything to help.

- [Those Murderous, Insane and Not Remotely Funny Nazis](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ThoseWackyNazis "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ThoseWackyNazis") in *[The Anglo/American – Nazi War](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Literature/TheAngloAmericanNaziWar "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Literature/TheAngloAmericanNaziWar")* have a pretty spectacular one when D-Day comes around and the Western Allies begin pushing them out of occupied Europe. That is, they begin systematically destroying landmarks and other cultural artifacts, along with salting the earth and poisoning the wells, just generally doing everything in their power to ensure that there's *no such thing as a Europe* after their defeat. Including a *televised* destruction of Paris which is so thorough that the post-war capital of France has to be moved to Lyon.
- The [Evil Overlord List](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EvilOverlordList "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EvilOverlordList") refers to this a few times, most famously \#24: "I will maintain a realistic assessment of my strengths and weaknesses. Even though this takes some of the fun out of the job, at least I will never utter the line "No, [This Cannot Be\!](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ThisCannotBe "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ThisCannotBe")! I AM INVINCIBLE!!!" (After that, death is usually instantaneous.)"
- In *[Lost Boys of the Cascades](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Literature/LostBoysOfTheCascades "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Literature/LostBoysOfTheCascades")*, Barry suffers a villainous breakdown after his attempt to frame the Klamath Indians for murdering Jennie, Troy, and Dylan falls apart due to Troy surviving and telling the truth.
- *[SCP Foundation](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Website/SCPFoundation "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Website/SCPFoundation")*: During the final stretches of [SCP-5761](https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-5761), a supercomputer that went insane while trying to track down Phthonus, Greek god of envy in games of *Among Us* ([long story](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ItMakesSenseInContext "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ItMakesSenseInContext")) gaining a god complex as it did and referring to itself as "Amogusrath" in the process along with forcing everyone aboard the International Space Station to essentially do *Among Us* in real life, tries to persuade Phthonus into helping it destroy and conquer Earth by crashing the ISS into it. The researcher Phthonus was with manages to get the god on her side, saying that if he accepted, it'd go against his hopes for humanity to move forward. This causes Amogusrath to throw a short-but-sweet hissy fit, feasibly trying to get Phthonus to vote out the researcher only to get voted out himself. The results? SCP-5761s anomalous properties shut off, freeing the people on the ISS, and caused it's real form to literally *explode from sheer anger.*

- In *[Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WebVideo/DrHorriblesSingAlongBlog "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WebVideo/DrHorriblesSingAlongBlog")*, the main character is shown as a [Technical Pacifist](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TechnicalPacifist "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TechnicalPacifist") and [Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IneffectualSympatheticVillain "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IneffectualSympatheticVillain") who states that killing isn't his style. This is followed in rapid succession by Captain Hammer's own breakdown when he is made to feel pain for the first time in his life (it's hard to call it a *[Heroic](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HeroicBSOD "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HeroicBSOD")* [BSOD](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HeroicBSOD "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HeroicBSOD") when he's shown to be just as evil as the protagonist), and a second, deeper one from Dr. Horrible when his victory coincides with the death of his [Love Interest](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LoveInterest "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LoveInterest").
- *[Epic Rap Battles of History](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WebVideo/EpicRapBattlesOfHistory "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WebVideo/EpicRapBattlesOfHistory")*:

- *[KateModern](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WebVideo/KateModern "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WebVideo/KateModern")*:

- The Shadow and Rupert van Helden have also suffered this by *The Last Work*.
- In [Max0r](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WebVideo/Max0r "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WebVideo/Max0r")'s "An Incorrect Summary of *[ULTRAKILL](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VideoGame/Ultrakill "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VideoGame/Ultrakill")* Part 2," Max demonstrates that you can enrage [V2](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MirrorBoss "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MirrorBoss") by punching him with his own arm, the Knuckleblaster. It turns him into a screaming, raging mess.

How does Soulless react to this speech? [By showing the Critic and Satan's daughter, Evilina, whom the Critic is babysitting, clips of bad Dr. Seuss movies.](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EvilCannotComprehendGood "/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EvilCannotComprehendGood")

### Video Example(s):
## Umbridge gets taken
Grawp pulls a Big Damn Heroes by picking up Dolores Umbridge by the scruff of her pink jumper and lifting her to eye level so he can stare at her, right when she's holding Harry and Hermione at wandpoint and nearly strangling one of the local centaurs with some conjured ropes. He eventually lets her go, not through her own efforts, but when he gets bored of the centaurs shooting him, at which point said centaurs carry her off to do... something.

# Umbridge gets taken
Grawp pulls a Big Damn Heroes by picking up Dolores Umbridge by the scruff of her pink jumper and lifting her to eye level so he can stare at her, right when she's holding Harry and Hermione at wandpoint and nearly strangling one of the local centaurs with some conjured ropes. He eventually lets her go, not through her own efforts, but when he gets bored of the centaurs shooting him, at which point said centaurs carry her off to do... something.
How well does it match the trope?
