How To Safely Remove Avocado Pit
Peel And Slice Avocado
Using Avocado
Podcast Episode: Cutting Avocados
Instructions: How to Cut an Avocado
How To Safely Remove Avocado Pit
Sure, it may look cool to whack the avocado pit with your big sharp knife to remove it, but it’s not the safest method. Especially if you’re not experienced with doing that trick.
First, use your knife to cut the avocado lengthwise, until you feel it hit the pit in the center of the avocado, then rotate to cut through the other side. Then you can twist the two halves in opposite directions to pull them apart.
I much prefer to use a knife or spoonÂ
around
the pit to scoop it out. It does mean that one half of the avocado may not get the most beautiful slices. But to be honest, I’m not usually super concerned about that unless I’m taking photos to share with you. In real life, I just want to safely get to the tasty avocado.
Peel And Slice Avocado
While many people like to scoop out the ripe avocado from the peel with a spoon, I prefer to quarter the avocado into wedges and peel. I find that the peel comes off evenly and cleanly the majority of the time. While sometimes with the spoon, some delicious avocado gets left behind on the peel.
If you want avocado slices, I like to cut on the bias for the nicest slices. What you see below is that most of the avocado ends up in really nice slices using my method, with just some of it not as nice from where we removed the pit.
If you want to dice your avocado into cubes, perhaps to add to your salad, cut thick slices and then cut each slice into a few pieces.
And of course, if you’re mashing the avocado for
guacamole
, or to puree it up into something smooth and delicious like for
this cottage cheese avocado toast
, no need to worry about slices or it looking pretty. Just peel the wedges and put them into your bowl or blender.

DESCRIPTION
Learn how to cut an avocado safely and easily with these easy steps.
Avocado
Cut avocado lengthwise until your knife reaches the pit, then turn avocado around to cut around to the other side.
Hold the two halves of the avocado and twist to separate them and pull them apart.
Run a knife or spoon around the pit and then wedge your spoon under it to pop it out.
Cut each avocado half in half again (so that you have 4 quarters). Pry the skin away from the avocado flesh at a pointy end, and then gently pull it away from the avocado wedge all the way down.
Now the ripe avocado flesh can be sliced, diced, or mashed for your recipe.
