Life after Death is a first-person psychological horror experience developed and published by ASK_GAMES that centers on memory, trauma, and introspection rather than traditional survival mechanics. The game places players in the role of Jessy, who awakens in a strange, unsettling environment with little understanding of how they arrived there. From the outset, the tone is heavy and disorienting, leaning into the idea that the world itself is a manifestation of fractured memories and unresolved fears. Rather than presenting a straightforward haunted-house narrative, the game frames its horror around personal history, inviting players to slowly reconstruct the protagonist’s past through exploration. Gameplay revolves primarily around methodical investigation. Players navigate dimly lit corridors, abandoned rooms, and shifting environments while searching for items and clues that allow progression. There is no emphasis on combat or complex systems; instead, tension arises from isolation and uncertainty. Objects scattered throughout the world—notes, environmental details, subtle audio cues—serve as fragments of narrative context. Puzzles are generally straightforward but require careful observation, often asking players to retrieve specific objects or interpret clues found earlier. This design reinforces the theme of piecing together forgotten memories, though it can occasionally slow pacing if objectives are unclear. Atmosphere is the game’s strongest element. Lighting plays a crucial role in shaping unease, with shadows and narrow visibility contributing to a sense of vulnerability. The sound design enhances this further, relying on ambient noise, distant echoes, and sudden tonal shifts to unsettle players. While there are moments of traditional jump-scare design, the horror more often manifests through anticipation and suggestion. The quiet stretches between events can be more unsettling than overt threats, creating a persistent sense that something is just out of sight. This slower, mood-driven approach may resonate with players who appreciate psychological tension over constant action. Narratively, Life after Death explores themes of childhood trauma and buried fears. As players advance, glimpses of Jessy’s past begin to surface, hinting at formative experiences that shaped their current mental state. The story unfolds in fragments rather than linear exposition, requiring players to interpret the significance of environmental storytelling. This fragmented structure aligns with the psychological theme, but it can also feel uneven. Some revelations are impactful and emotionally charged, while others may seem abrupt or underdeveloped. The writing attempts to balance ambiguity with clarity, though at times the narrative cohesion wavers. The pacing is deliberately slow, which can be both immersive and challenging. Players who enjoy exploring every corner and absorbing environmental detail may appreciate the contemplative rhythm. However, the lack of explicit direction or objective markers can occasionally lead to confusion or repetitive backtracking. This sense of being lost may be intentional, mirroring Jessy’s own disorientation, but it risks frustrating players who prefer clearer guidance. The experience is most effective when approached with patience and a willingness to engage deeply with the environment. Visually, the game utilizes accessible indie-level assets and straightforward environmental design rather than high-end graphical fidelity. While some textures and models may appear generic, the overall presentation succeeds in maintaining atmosphere. The visual simplicity allows lighting and spatial design to carry emotional weight. Combined with audio cues, even modest environments can feel oppressive and tense. The game’s technical scope is modest, but its ambition lies in emotional storytelling rather than spectacle. Reception to Life after Death has reflected this duality. Some players praise its mood-driven storytelling and appreciate its attempt to craft a personal, introspective horror narrative. Others critique aspects such as repetitive environments, uneven puzzle design, or occasional technical roughness. As an indie project, it shows both creative ambition and signs of limited resources. Its success largely depends on the player’s expectations; those seeking polished, cinematic horror may find it lacking, while players open to experimental and introspective storytelling may find it engaging. Ultimately, Life after Death stands as a reflective psychological horror title that prioritizes atmosphere and memory-driven narrative over mechanical complexity. It is less about surviving monsters and more about confronting the lingering shadows of the past. While it may not redefine the genre or deliver constant thrills, it offers a subdued, contemplative journey into fear shaped by personal history. For players who value slow-burn tension and narrative exploration, it provides a haunting experience that lingers quietly rather than explosively. Rating: 6/10

Rating: 6/10 Read More *** Was this review helpful? He surely doesn't lack imagination. In concept, both these games could be quite good. That said, while 'Besides me' was mediocre, this one was just terrible. Hardly any scares, constantly walking around trying to find the thing to interact with. Oh I need a beam of wood? There's plenty around, but no, you MUST take the one hidden in the dark. Why? Don't know. I think one scare even bugged out. Suddenly some scary chase-scene music started to play, but nothing happened. Also, what's the deal with grandma? Why was she there? What was her backstory? Don't know. There's a nice chapter selection at the end though. And the house looked ok, considering it was made out of stock assets again. And then there's 'that' achievement. Stay 30 minutes in a chapter before finishing it? Why? Worse even, it's not enough to just be in that level. You need to be freaking AFK for 30 minutes while the game is running in the foreground! One accidental bump against the mouse and the timer starts again! AND IT DIDN'T UNLOCK! Jeez dev! Why?? Seems life after dead is just a boring disappointed. Hope the next one is better since I already bought the bundle... Read More *** Was this review helpful? It was janky, nonsensical and absolutely hilarious because of this. I dismissed it as "first game clunk", and still bought this one despite the "mixed" reviews. Surely they learnt from their mistakes in some way? Not at all. I feel like Life After Death trumps the first game in regards to storytelling. I was much more engaged with the storyline here, which made it all the more difficult to enjoy what was given in terms of gameplay and visuals. This game and the last have the same issue of not really indicating what you have to do. A significant amount of your playtime will be messing around with everything and walking back and forward aimlessly as you try to figure out what on earth the devs want you to accomplish. If there was more direction, it would crunch the gametime down by a significant margin, and therefore not justify spending \$11.40NZD on an experience that's actually about 45-50 minutes long. Because of this, the pacing and terrible "puzzle" design feels almost deliberate and I can't enjoy a game that manipulates the player into thinking its longer, when it's really just a clumsy mess. Visually, this game honestly looks worse than the last. Every room in this house is empty, and most areas look the same. More reused assets are prominent and the sound design is mostly stock SFX you've probably heard in other free indie demos on itch.io I can appreciate the devs trying to mimic Bloober Team and do a "Layers of Fear" inspired section, plus there is now an actual threat that can harm you, but there's still no tension whatsoever. The enemy in question is super slow and can be ignored completely if you crash on a bed or couch. Life After Death is seriously disappointing. It feels like a deliberate move to make nonsensical puzzles with zero sense of direction to pad the gametime, and charging \$11.40NZD for something that *still* only takes about 2 hours to 100% feels like a scam. There's some small stuff here that made me feel a little less mad at this game when playing, but it can't even manage to be as enjoyably bad as the developer's previous outing. 2/10 Read More *** Was this review helpful? Life After Death is unfortunately a fairly run of the mill standard indie horror game. You have stock assets that I've seen many times before, you have puzzles that involve finding one item to use on another item, you have random jumpscares you have mediocre chase sequences that aren't scary. All in one package. It's not that Life After Death is a terrible game because what is here is competently put together at at least functions into a complete title, however the game lacks anything to make it truly memorable or recommendable. The games English translation seems really hit or miss to the point of being comic gold at times, some bits are well translated and make sense while others seem to have been done by machine or by someone without a full grasp of the language. While I know its not always easy to find translators on a limited budget, some of the notes were laugh out loud funny with how badly they were done. If you've played any other "PT" style horror title in the last few years this is more or less the same, your given a bigger area to explore than most and there is more back-tracking to find items than most, but essentially this is something we've seen all before, including the games story and ending. Didn't encounter any bugs or major issues with the play through however and the devs should be praised for the game having polish for what it is, I will say that I think the dev can make some great titles in the future and this could be a stepping stone towards that if some further polish , better storytelling and just not being a clone of many other indie horror titles was applied. Unfortunately I can't recommend the title simply as it's just very generic and ultimately quite boring, never good for a horror game. Read More *** Was this review helpful? Walking and Light Switching simulator. Repeating each chapter simply from the closet room to the basement, learning more of the story, dull and coarse. Few jumpscares but the fear factor is rather low. Poor and abrupt ending. The usual case of Visual and Graphic settings that keeps resetting, and the always asking Eng or Rus. Playable, easy game to perfect, but felt little sense of achievement. Played and forgotten. Neutral or Poor recommendation. Read More *** Was this review helpful? Life after Death is a first-person psychological horror experience developed and published by ASK\_GAMES that centers on memory, trauma, and introspection rather than traditional survival mechanics.
