Since then, it has grown into an official festival of the state of Sabah and is often made one of the main events in the Sabah and Malaysia Tourism Calendar. The word "lepa" refers to the traditional boats of the Bajau community that have been used for generations as transportation on the sea. In the context of the Lepa Regatta, these boats are decorated with colorful fabrics, delicate wood carvings, and traditional ornaments to compete in terms of creativity and beauty.
