What to Do About Bad Neighbors?
What Types of Bad Neighbors Are There?
Type 1: Slightly Annoying Neighbors
Type 2: Annoying Neighbors
Type 3: Exceptionally Annoying Neighbors
So, a bad neighbor is anyone who lives next door (or next floor) and gets on your nerves regularly by doing something thatâs not particularly illegal but exceptionally annoying. If it becomes uncomfortable for you to stay home, chances are good itâs a bad neighbor to blame.
What to Do About Bad Neighbors?
Your course of action should always depend on the annoyance your neighbor causes. Sometimes, the best approach would be to accept the situation and learn how to stay indifferent. In others, it might be necessary to master the art of legal torment. At the same time, in infrequent situations, it would make sense to find a way to make your neighbor move (since horrible neighbors are often horrible tenants, thereâs always a chance of.)
Simply put, the key is to keep things reasonable. Entering into a war with a bad neighbor might take you down the wrong path and cost you a lot of healthy nerves. Thatâs why you should always start with a friendly approach and only refer to drastic measures when nothing else seems to be working.
What Types of Bad Neighbors Are There?
For the sake of simplicity, letâs group all nasty neighbors into three categories, from most minor to most annoying ones, and consider suggested courses of action for each.
Type 1: Slightly Annoying Neighbors
Common Examples:
Parents of not well-behaved kids whoâre screaming all day long, drivers who got it wrong about parking rules, irresponsible pet owners having a hard time taking care of their four-legged friends, overly friendly ladies who want to tell you their biography each time you meet, chronic borrowers.
Introduce Yourself and Get to Know Them Better
Thatâs what you need to do first thing if your neighbors start to annoy you regularly. Introducing yourself and letting your neighbors know what bothers you might make wonders. Firstly, people tend to be more ashamed and respectful of those they know personally. Secondly, there is a little chance that your neighbors have no idea they annoy you, and telling them so will solve the problem once and for all.
Donât Accuse, Tell Them How it Makes You Feel
One of the most common mistakes is accusing neighbors from the start. A more intelligent approach would be telling them youâre bothered and annoyed but keeping the conversation friendly and polite. Try to find the root cause of your neighborâs bad behavior and offer to help if theyâve happened to deal with a problem that makes them behave in a particular way.
Mirror the Behavior of Your Neighbor
A
widely-used psychological trick
, mirroring your neighborâs behavior, might help them realize their fault and never do things that annoy you again. At the same time, this approach will help you get even with annoying neighbors (but only if youâre seeking revenge more than a solution to your neighbor-related problem).
Consider Using Mediators
So wags the world that some people get along with each other with ease, while others find it hard to understand each otherâs concerns and feelings. If the second option describes your relationship with your neighbor, it makes a lot of sense to find a mediator willing to solve the problem for the benefit of both parties. If youâre renting, ask your landlord if they can mediate. As you send checks to your landlord every month (or
pay rent online
), your comfort should also be their concern.
Give a Warning (Concrete One)
Informing annoying neighbors about your willingness to contact their landlord or local precinct can sometimes do wonders. As long as you sound confident and concrete, a simple warning might make your neighbors stop doing things that annoy you.
Common Examples:
Party animals dancing and drinking 24/7, gossipers who spread rumors about you or your family, and rock bands singing the same chords in a garage self-made studio.
Seek Support From Other Neighbors
Itâs always easier to achieve desired goals through joint efforts. If itâs likely that youâre not the only one unhappy about your neighborâs behavior, you should check if someone else is ready to side with you. This point is crucial if you contact the local precinct or file a complaint in court. In this case, quantity matters. The more people share your opinion, the more chances you have to win.
Call Your Neighborâs Landlord
Most people donât like complaining or reporting on others, but sometimes, itâs the only way out. If your neighbors are long-term tenants, chances are good they donât want to be evicted. If this holds, your problem will likely be solved before you know it.
Contact HOA (Homeowners Association)
This is probably one of the simplest ways to buy your neighbor out or stop their annoying behavior. In some cases, a manager of the association could talk to a noise-making neighbor and fine them if a simple warning is insufficient. Chances are good this step would solve the problem to a certain extent.
Refer to the Governing Laws
If youâre dealing with noise, which is the most common reason for disputes between neighbors, refer to the letter of the law.
There are ordinances
to prohibit unnecessary, unreasonable, and excessive levels of noise meant to protect you from being a victim of noise-makers. If you can prove that the problem is real and your neighbor is a source, you can refer to a small claims court (for financial compensation) or a regular civil court (to cease the noise-maker).
Type 3: Exceptionally Annoying Neighbors
Common Examples:
Psychos, sneaky stealers, garbage collectors, and criminals doing bad business right in front of your home.
Collect Evidence and Try to Force Your Neighbor to Move
If your neighborâs behavior is exceptionally irritating but not life-threatening, you may want to collect evidence and contact authorities (local precincts, cops, lawyers). Another option you have is to write a petition together with other neighbors. Have your petition signed by as many residents as possible and state a grievance and desired outcome. Once done, present it to the landlord or HOA. If
your complaint is legitimate
, the problem will be fixed relatively soon.
Consider Moving to Another âHood
In some cases, the best decision is to move to another neighborhood. This is especially true if youâve tried to solve the problem differently, but nothing helped. Not to mention the situations when living with a nasty neighbor, which is annoying and dangerous. If youâre sure the person next door is involved in illegal business or is a psycho whose behavior might pose a threat to your health, report the problem to the police and move out from your current place of residence as fast as possible.
Bad Neighbors FAQ
Who would you usually call a bad neighbor?
Bad neighbors can exhibit various behaviors, such as excessive noise, property neglect, rude interactions, or constant disturbances. Any behavior that negatively impacts your living environment can indicate a bad neighbor.
What should I do if I have bad neighbors?
If youâre dealing with bad neighbors, your approach should be determined by the level of annoyance they cause. Start with a friendly conversation to address the issue. If a friendly approach doesnât work, consider more drastic measures or involve authorities.
What should I do if my neighbor is consistently noisy?
If noise is the problem, approach your neighbor politely and tell them how their noise affects you. If the issue persists, check your local noise ordinances and consider involving your landlord or building management if you rent. As a last resort, you might need to contact the local authorities.
How can I handle a neighbor whoâs intrusive or too nosy?
Set boundaries with such neighbors and clarify when their behavior makes you uncomfortable. Maintain a respectful but firm demeanor to ensure they understand your privacy needs. If the behavior continues, limit interactions and avoid sharing personal information.
When should I involve a third party, like the landlord or authorities?
If direct communication doesnât resolve the issue, involving a third party may be necessary. Inform your landlord or property manager about the situation if youâre renting. In extreme cases, such as illegal activities or harassment, contacting local law enforcement might be best.
On a Final Note
In some cases, neighbors might be the absolute nightmare next door. If it happens, peopleâs most common (and most natural) reaction is to arrange a lousy neighborâs revenge, find out how to get even with bad neighbors, or even get them to move. But no matter what happens, remember that conflicts are best resolved through negotiations, not wars. Talk to your neighbors, tell them what bothers you, and propose a solution. Only refer to authorities if a friendly approach doesnât work or you have grounds to assume that your neighbors might have a history with the law.

I live in a 4 plex. Iâm on the garden level and my neighbor across the hall and the neighbor above me share a kid and it is back and forth for these people. She supposedly is homeschooling her kids so sheâs home all day. Now, so am I after my surgery. Ugh.. My first problem began with my zero privacy I have from this woman and her kids walking by my bedroom window, literally no space between them and my window! Wtf. No boundaries. We all have our own private outside entrance apart from the main building entrance which leads to all 4 apartments. The upstairs guy is cool, and respectful. But the woman across from me is something else! Instead of using the inside stairs or walking around the front, they go behind the building walking right by my window. I wouldnât care if there was a distance between them and my window but there is not! We also have our own washer and dryer/laundry room inside our unit. Well, for the past 4 weeks straight she has been going upstairs and doing laundry all day long every day!!! It is literally right above my bedroom so itâs hard not to notice especially since Iâm trying to rest after my surgery. I donât like confrontation and Iâm totally unsure how or what to say or do about her bullshit. If her washer broke.. well that sucks for her but should not become my problem! NO BREAK FROM HER LAUNDRY EVERYDAY ALL DAY! NOBODY HAD THAT MANY CLOTHES TO WASH! Iâd appreciate some input and advice, ignoring her is not an option.

So my neighbor used to never be home and if they were we could never tell. But recently meaning this year they have been showing out. Between the constant partying which results with their trash getting all over my yard. The loud music that they love to play out the trunk of their car. Donât get me started on them playing soccer with their bad/loud kids at night constantly kicking the ball against my house. Then if that wasnât enough they also love to shoot their gun right next to my house since our houses are so close together. I literally feel like Iâm starting to have a nervous breakdown dealing with these psychoâŚ.

So I moved alone for the first time into my dream place. My complex isnât big, in the heart of a cute neighborhood outside the city and perfect.. till my below neighbor starting getting very irrational.
So i will admit I had a few men over and we werenât the most quiet, if you know what i mean, but I never have thrown a party and rarely had a friend over and Iâve been living here for 3 months now. One day I had my apple pod at a level that I couldnât hear from the other room and i live in a 950 sq. ft. place. I get a ring at my door and its my downstairs neighbor asking if I can turn it off and meet in the middle on a volume that is appropriate. âNo need to get landlords involvedâ what he first told me before I officially moved in. Apparently his place was his motherâs whom passed away and heâs been vacating it since (maybe 10+ years.) He also does minor maintenance around the building⌠but Iâm not sure if that includes access to the apartments. lastly, I was going on a run around 6pm and I maybe had a more weighted walk down my stairs than usual. I get back and thereâs a single note at the top of my stairs, by my entry saying âremember you have downstairs neighbors!.â At that point, I felt my privacy was violated since he took the audacity to walk all the way up to my door entrance instead of leaving it at the bottom or something..am I overreacting or is this guy just an as\*hole?

Turn down your music. The walls/floor are thinner than you think. Or put in earbuds and blast it for your ears only. Obviously he can hear your music and itâs annoying. I doubt he would make this up just to harass you. Just keeping it real. I used to annoy the F outta my neighbors when I was younger with my tunes. Feel bad about that now that Im older and more settled.

Yes! You are overreacting.
Some people faces real problems to sleep as they might be disturbed by such noise easily and lose their night of sleep.
Your privacy was not violated as I canât say the same about his. Using hills or making noise too early in the morning is rather a bad social behavior.
Remember: your working hours might differ of his.

I bought a townhouse 3 years ago. My neighbor next door told me that the corner parking space is mine and explain to me where everyone parks. We do no have assigned parking space but very respectful of each other in this subdivision. One of the unit didnât sale so the construction company decided to rent the unit out. The first day that the 2 tenants moved in , they park in my space. So my neighbor explained to them were everyone park and that they have 2 spots right to their rental units. Fast forward, I cam home 3 weeks ago and a car was in my space. So I knock at their door, asked if it was their car. They said yes that they have a visitor. I asked them politely if they dont mind moving their car to the visitors spot. They said their is no assigned parking and that was that. I cam home last weekend after this event happened 3 weeks ago and they have parked their car in my space all weekend and didnât move it at all. zThey are taking turn , when one leaves the other switch parking spot with the other. I think it is disrespectful, rude, inconsiderate. All of the neighbors are mad but no one knows what to do. I have written a letter to HOA and waiting for their answer. I believed it is a no win here but why does people behave like this? I am really tired of this young generation that are totally entittled to everything they want.

Hello, I live in a townhouse and own my unit. The unit next to me is being rented out and the renters are breaking the rules all the time. We live in a wooded area and have a small deck on the back of our units. They keep putting a wood burning firepit on a rug on the deck surrounded by wicker furniture, cray paper, sheets and plants. It is directly under my windows and fills my house with smoke and I am concerned my unit will burn down. They have been fined over and over again for the past 6 years and each year the harrassment escalates. I have had my door busted, called \$\#%\$ when I step out on my deck and had things stolen, smashed and they go around telling all the neighbors lies. I need some advice, I have gone to managment company and they do fine them but the tenants are horrible human beings. That is just one of the issues that concern me the most of my unit burning down. Rules say no firepits. this is year 7 and I am worried what will happen this year.

Hi everyone! So we just recently had to move out of a house we were renting for over 3yrs. In the 3 years we have adopted 2 dogs. One is 2.5yrs old and 1yr 3months. Of course that was the start of covid. They are 80lb and 100lb dogs. Would not hurt a fly let alone a person. But with that said, moving into an apartment building is new grounds for them so learning that everyone isnât gonna hurt us is a major dealing. Yes they will bark that hey, your here I see you. Is there intent but our neighbor is deathly afraid that they are pitbulls and are gonna attack. They have complained to the city and had them out in the 2 weeks that we have been here. Besides getting rid of our family member or moving, what would you suggest to do in order to defuse them from being like this towards us and the dogs? I really donât want to hate my neighbour or have to bring the landlord in on this. Thanks for your time\!

Hi there,
I think you absolutely have to bring the landlord in on this. You can remind them your dogs are safe and that the fear of others is based on their own fears. I wouldnât advise letting your neighbours meet the dogs to show them the dogs are nice, in case those people do something to make the dogs scared and react, and then there will be a lot of other problems. You need to document that youâve been trying to do what you can to keep your neighbours from being scared, but that everyone else must also be reasonable. Good luck\!

Record your dogs whole outside and donât leave them alone for a second. It be better if other people are around so you can play the video to authorities. I have my own house and I have a blizzard neighbor who sent the animal controlv2 x. There was nothing to see and the inspector said he was going to â red glad itâ so they stop harassing me. Its hard to live with people that are not animal lovers. Look on line for morecadvice.

You must be one of those âstressed outâ people who cares a lot about cigs and weed, but donât give a damn about cars, airplanes, factories, forest fires and all other invisible smokes we are forced to live with on this planet, sometimes against out will. If you own a car â guess what â you are helping to produce more smoke in one day than a chain-smoker blowing weed on your face for one year. Car fumes are not only harmful to your neighbours, but also for the whole bloody planet. I wonder if scapegoating is a solution, or perhaps I should start complainigng about peopleâs noisy, smelly carsâŚ

Call Child Protective Services they can remove the children if their mother continues to endanger them with her smoking. Itâs only right those kids get a chance to live without a constant deadly exposure from her cigs. Their lungs are already damaged.

Try talking to her. Let her know how much it bothers you and try asking if she would smoke further away from your door. Try putting a fan on your step to push the smoke away. It really sound to me that you are the more irrational neighbor here, not her.

Already look stupid hating on a maybe stressed out mom whoâs husband is in the service so sheâs alone with the children and thatâs a lot. People who wish to run the world and what people do, need to go buy a house with land big enough to be ALONE!! Until you get a house and your own land. Please take into consideration the fact. Your living situation is one that you share space with others and your only making it uncomfortable for others and yourself trying to conquer others and what there doing. Go buy a house and land or move into an old folks place thatâs monitored by staff so you can not pick at them

i have astham too, and I am a chain-smoker. Some weed are atually benefitial to your lungs (do you know that tobacco was use as a lung cleaner?), And guess what â thereâs no significant relation between SMELL OF SMOKE and ASTHMA. There are other toxic stuff likely to produce asthma symptons than your neighbours smoke. Get a life\!
If you are worried about your neighbourâs cig â and the FALSE effects of so called âsecond hand smokingâ â you should have a look on your own life-style. First â do you have a car? Because cars produce infinitely more smoke than your neighbourâs does. Itâs just invisible. Do you live in the city centre? There are thousands of cars there, and buses, airplanes, factories, restaurant kitchens, etc. So, if you are worried about your childrenâs asthma, go and live far away from society, because we are all doomed by pollution here.

We moved into our apartment about a year ago (our lease is up in March), and we really enjoyed living inside the apartment, until the neighbors living above us become so much of an issue that I am filing a police report with my husband after he gets home from work today.
We live in a 3 unit house on the second floor. We are currently sandwiched between an 85 year old woman downstairs and a 40-somethings couple living upstairs with their 11 year old daughter. The woman downstairs is currently in the hospital and it doesnât look like sheâll be returning to live here, but she was a pleasant neighbor to us for the year we have lived here.
Our upstairs neighbors are a whole different story. First of all, the wife is a compulsive liar. She has lied to both my husband and I about really dumb things in the past. She even gave me the number for someone she doesnât know claiming they had offered her a job and wanted to give me the opportunity. The woman had no idea who my neighbor was and seemed really annoyed that I had called her personal number. I was totally embarrassed and even told my neighbor that the woman didnât even know who she was. Her response was really strange, she just lied and made up some bs excuse and claimed that the woman was suffering from memory loss\!
Anyway, this neighbor of mine has a psychotic husband as well, who will yell and scream and vandalize your property whenever he doesnât get his way.
The following incident happened two nights ago around 11:30 pm (Super Bowl Sunday):
It snowed a lot here last week, and it took a long time to clear the driveway. Normally, our neighbors have two cars and use the âlongerâ side of the driveway, but they recently got rid of one of their cars. My husband usually parks on the shorter side of the driveway, which only fits one car, and I usually park on the street. When it snowed, we asked our neighbor (the wife) if we could switch spots with her husbandâs car. She said it was perfectly alright, but keep in mind she is a liar and I already knew that.
We parked on the long side and at around 11, we started hearing the husband screaming up a storm. He came to our windows and banged on them, screaming at us to come outside right now. The husband mainly speaks Spanish, which I understand as well. He was threatening my husband, calling him all kinds of derogatory names, and terrorizing us. Then, he went outside to his car, took out a snow shovel and started shoveling dirt, snow, gravel, and ice onto my husbandâs hood and windshield. Eventually, I went outside and tried to diffuse the situation so that he would just stop screaming and trying to hurt our cars. He cussed me and my husband out and went inside. I know now that we should have called the police immediately. It was a mistake to confront him because it has just made me feel more scared living here. Always call the police first!!!!\!
But that is why we are going to file the police report, because itâs really important to have a record of the incident.
We are looking at a new apartment tomorrow, and Iâm really looking forward to it. It gives me a lot of hope in my life and takes away the anxiety of feeling bullied by my neighbors. It all seems like perfect timing that this is happening as well, because our lease is almost up and we have the means right now to move somewhere else. I hope this helped anyone struggling with bad neighbors. If you can talk to them about issues reasonably, then youâre lucky. Sometimes thereâs only legal action that can and should be taken.

First off do not do anything illegal nobody is worth getting yourself in trouble and ruining a good reputation. One of my neighbors for 15 years would constantly shine bright spot lights on our home. Simple solution I finally woke up and installed a nice set of lights shining right back! 99% problem solved and itâs been months. Even though the couple behind me knew it was wrong what they were doing they do occasionally put them on but as I said 99% of the time itâs been better so far. Role reversal is a very powerful tool act as they do to you of course nothing illegal and some people with half a brain will realize it and knock it off. As for the rest you canât fix stupid.

I have literally the worst neighbors one could possibly imagine, they make noise all hours of the day/night with their dirt bikes, ATVâs,ect. They have two aggressive dogs that arenât under control nor are they on tie outs they claim theyâve put an invisible fence in and itâs in use however on more then one occasion after being âput inâ their dogs have gone out of their yard and tried to attack other dogs.
On more then one occasion theyâve gone after other peoples dogs and mine, the town I live in requires you to have a burn permit which they dont have and yet they still burn.
The town also requires one to let neighbors know about any construction that is to be happening and when they also need a permit for that which they dont have.
Dont get me wrong I dont have a problem with any other neighbor just them all the others like me, I know what many might say itâs easier to move but ive lived here longer they have.
Itâs a quiet place where everyone letâs you know what theyâre going to be doing with the exception of general yard work thatâs a given.
They seem like they were going to be a problem until a few months after moving in as the last two tenants were pretty well behaved.
It just seems to me they have absolutely no regards for anyone but themselves especially when I get complaints from other people asking if it was me.
Itâs like groundhogs day, what makes it worse is Iâm having to explain that Iâve lived here for x amount of years and how much noise have they had from me.
Everyone in my area has said theyâve spoken to the town about them and nothing seems to get done and Iâm about ready to become one of the most annoying obnoxious people theyâve ever had the displeasure of meeting.

Hi Cheryl, What would you do in this situation? I purchased a home 3 years ago. We have a paved shared driveway (common area) with 7 other homes. I noticed that a certain neighbor at the end of the driveway would shoot water down the driveway every day. The water streams down into the curb fronting my home. The asphalt is crumbling from all of the water and the rock particles end up in the curb in front of my home. The small gravel rocks (from the crumbling asphalt) get caught in our tires/shoes and end up in our garage and kitchen if we donât sweep the curb and garage every day. I then noticed she was also shooting down her garbage can and her pet waste box and spilling it down the driveway, which I consider unsanitary. I approached her husband one evening to talk about it while he was standing in front of my home washing his freshly-cut grass clippings down the curb. He told me, âThis is a common areaâ and the wife got angry, came running over, and started screaming at me. The husband told me, âLook, how long have you been living here? We have been doing this for many years and had no problems with anyone.â Iâm assuming that no one had a problem because my house was a rental home before I purchased it. I asked them how they would like it if I put water in my garbage can and spilled it in front of their garage. Their answer was, âIt will only roll back down into your area.â They have AstroTurf in their fenced back yard and a small area of live grass in front so everything gets washed down the common area in front of my house. Not fair that our homeowner maintenance fees will pay for the eventual re-surfacing of the common driveway when they are the ones who have damaged the asphalt. Your thoughts???

View âMichael Hukeâ on YouTube, assault a 71 year old who had parked on the road outside his house. The incident was reported to the police who declined to investigate (despite numerous requests).
After 12 weeks someone uploaded the video onto YouTube, weeks later the bystander who had witnessed and videoed the incident was arrested at his place of work, charged with harassment as the video discredited Michael Huke before his staff at Lloyds Bank. 2 or 3 hours later the 71 year old was arrested at home with the same charge. Both were released later in the day without charge.
23 other incidents of harassment by Michael Huke have been reported to the police over a 2 year period, including dangerous driving, anti-social behaviour, assault etc. Michael Huke has been served with 4 âcease and desistâ letters (to my knowledge) one for trespass, he signed an ABC (acceptable behaviour contract) for the Local Authority Anti-social team, he was prosecuted for allowing his dog to defecate on the highway outside a neighbourâs property.

Deborah Rogers- I believe in prayer as well. My right side neighbor was a bad one with drug addict son. His son and friends parked his car with loud music in front of my house and they started drinking bears all night long and left the empty cans on my front yard. I talked to his mom about it, and they started picking the empty cans next morning. I felt sorry for her. Well, I pray so strongly to our Almighty Father and in less than one month the entire family was moving out. âNow, the neighbor on the left side are giving me problems. I told him that his son broke my fence throwing a ball and he didnât fix. Also, he switched my trash can with his broken wheel one. I had to call the city for them to replace mine with a new one. The guy has a mechanic/body shop in his garage and use the streets to park the cars he has to fix. I told him that he cannot block my Mail box. I even received a note from the Post Office to remove the car, otherwise, they couldnât deliver my mail. This is against the Law because this is a residential neighborhood. I donât want to be stressed about it and I am praying for them to move to a place where he would have a plenty of space to do his business. I thank God that I read your notes, it gave me strength to pray some more and reminded me that God listens. God bless!! Thanks for the prayers!\!

how about all you people take a long hard look at yourselfâs in the mirror maybe you are actually looking at the problem. Think back when the neighbors first moved in or you moved in (doesnât really matter who was there first). I bet most of you were judgmental on how they looked, spoke or carried themselves or they said good day and you gave them the cold shoulder because you have judged them from the very first moment youâve seen them. I see a lot of comments on here, and most of you sound like you carry your noses way to high. Example: Creepy neighbors who live off fraudulent insurance and workmanâs comp settlements. 1: If you could back that up remotely with any evidence there would be an investigation and they would be kicked out and repay everything they got payed and if they could not do that they would be in jail.
2: If you donât have any evidence you are assuming (assumptions make an ass out of you and leave you open for libel, slander and defamation law suits).
3: City Noise Ordinance, there is places you can go and complain if it proves to be right what you are complaining about they will get warnings and eventually go to court if it hasnât stopped.
4: Resident Quiet Hours Policy is straight up garbage unless you are at university (which all universityâs enforce this), the only time this is warranted is if the landlord has this as a policy in the actual rental agreement (so i would read my rental agreement again) otherwise it is not a valid Policy and you should move on before it makes you look like a you know what again.
5: As for Theodore Roberts (Oh boy please think before you speak) if you have used your real name and this person ever stumbles across this site, they can sue the pants of you for Defamation, Racism, Sexism and bigotry and that is just a start and there is nothing you can do about it. So please a little thinking with your comments here.
6: MiTmite9 your comment collect evidence through form of recordings, videos, photos.
REALLY???? In case you did not know (let me educate you a little) It is illegal in 90% of the world (unless you live in countryâs with either military rule, communism or no law enforcement) to record video, photos or voice without the permission of the recorded person unless you are working for law enforcement and even then it is only possible with a cord order to do so otherwise it is inadmissible in any situation and you leave yourself open (yes you guessed it LAW SUITS again by the person you are recording)
Closing words: Educate yourselves do research before giving other people the wrong advise or make assumptions or comments that can ruin your own lives.

Some people are friendly to no end to the new comers and are on friendly terms for years until they just snap. After handing all the evidence of gun shots at the house, Nazi supporting, racism, death/rape threats, drug deals in the front garden and much much more disgusting criminal behaviour (all caught on cctv) are handed the right authorities, they do nothing and say, itâll take time but then when they do eventually get it their arses, they sit laughing and joking with the criminals right outside the victims residences. Maybe you shouldnât make assumptions about the visitors and commenters on this site.

It is perfectly fine to record loud noise stomping and on God know what else from noisy in considerate neighbors. You clearly are one of those people who think its ok to make your neighbors miserable while you enjoy your place. No one should have to listen to all the noise and stomping all times of day from their neighbors and no one should have to tell you that your floor is someone else ceiling and you should be mindful. My neighbors drag furniture all times a night even during the quiet hours listed in our rental agreement. They are only concerned with themselves and their good time. They keep up noise constant walking and stomping at 11pm and most times until 1am. I have talked till I am blue in the face and I am tired of it Me and my family should not have to listen to that on a daily basis but we do so I give as good as I get now. They keep up all the noise and want to play the victim. Hell naw.

I have horrible neighbors. They are related to half the people in village..go to church regularly..but they are horrible to me.
There access to their house but they trespass onto my driveway as shortcut. I have not given permission and have complained when they block my drive.
They yell things at me âwe cannot wait for you to dieâ ânobody has any use for youâ got place looks like n\#####s live thereâ.
I am 84 years old and own my property. I have been yold this is elder abuse . Oh I was told there talk about burning me out. I reported this to sheriff.

I have neighbors, its more like a bunch of people from the community, that drive by my house, every few minutes blasting their radios. It does not start at a certain time, its all day long and all night long. They donât have their radio loud when they are driving, they crank it up when they get near our house, and turn it back down when they closer to the next house. Mostly its base that makes that Boom Boom sound. They have been doing it for about 2 and half years. I have called the police many times, specially when it wakes me every night. Recently they have been getting worse, and I have not slept in days. I have sent letters to different places, including the Government, and no one will help. Our house has been for sale for a few years on and off, as we change realtors. When the police do help they drive up in their police cars and they all disappear. When the police leave, they all come back. The police say their is no law against how loud they want to play their radio. They play cat and mouse with the police while they harass me and my mom. I am 56 and mom is 79. We donât get much sleep these days. I donât have an income and she is retired and we barely make the bills. We need help. (I believe they also have a way of listening to everything we say.)(Amazon sells devices that listen thru walls for \$50-\$150, at a range of 300 feet.)

The fact we were all forced to stay at home made spying so much easier â sometimes the stalkers are just bored people with nothing to do, sometimes they have agendas. Three yrs ago they started playing annoying tapes from their screened. In porch not music gunshots airraid noises. Banging metal sounds. If you call police and they see the car they stop. I called the assoc here manytimes. They do nothing also this summer I BELIEVE they stole water from you hose to their I use about 3300gal a mo and some readings were 13000 gal. Also they cut up my hoses on both sides of the house because they cidntwantme using waterwhi.E they were trying to torch my house THEY AND 2 OF their friends in the nice middle-class neighborhood with 300000 value of houses have helped them by shooting guns randomly. Putting mounds of red fire ants on my yard digging up my lawn to surge my underground wiring NOW I THINK THEY AREmoving. They packed up a trailer and left but the one in thehouse is making noise THEY are fuming mad that their evil manipulation didnât work and show their hatred thru noise and extreme vandalism. My neighbor has always been unpleasant, frequently yelling at me, trying bully me, etc. When I was at work they were doing things in the blind spots of my security cameras that are mounted from the eaves.
I kept not having time to run cables through the attic for new cameras in the blind spots & last fall I came home to my back yard totally trashed by debris thrown over the fence, broken flower pots(knocked over by the debris I think) and the smell of weed killer on my flowers (most did not come back this year). So, last winter I took some old cell phones and put an app called âAlfredâ on them & set or hung them in the windows. It records on motion and stores footage for 5 days for free. I was able to successfully catch my neighbor doing enough in the spring to download & burn it to CD for the cops. While I never saw cops cars in my camera footage, I strongly believe something happened. The neighbor has been livid â Iâve been flipped off several times but I have not been yelled at or harassed in months\!
I have white power cords(that match the blinds) going to the phones & I put the phones in cases that kinda match the background of where they are sitting in the window. The cases also help keep the phone in the correct spot or angle.

Its so disheartening but the truth,we built our dream home, all our hard earned ,money has been put into it,savings, salaries etc ,literally everything. Our opposite vacant plots got homes built by some contractors and tenants moved in.All small houses built one above other like a pack of match boxes, sadly all from slum.Imagine our condition. We are not against people who are from low earning group or below middle class,we respect people from any class/group as long as they are civilized and well mannered. But to our bad luck, all sorts of cheap people have come here. The worst amongst all of them is a specefic family whose relative also stays on the top floor, together they are creating such a big mess.Keeps slandering about us because we have own house and they dont.Goes on and on,just doesnt stop, tried speaking with them but turned out more messier.the moment she sees us standing outside our gate or enjoying fresh breeze in terrace, she starts mocking along with her other relative, make fun of us,laugh, taunt. Its going on since a year. Please advice. It will be greatly appreciated.

Of course, this list leaves out the worst neighbor of all, the ones who are hyper-aware of the surrounding properties without ever making an attempt to befriend the people occupying them. They do the passive aggressive thing of filing complaints with the city without engaging their neighbors face-to-face. If their neighborâs spouse or child dies, theyâll never know, but they will certainly make a point of calling in to complain about the overgrown lawn while their neighbor grieves.

Collecting all illegal evidence then hiring an attorney to go about dealibg with the landlord can go a long way. In many states, landlords are ultimately responsible and wont want the liability of problem tenants. Especially if your attorney emphasizes that you are willing and able to litigate.

Iâd say that thereâs not really anything you could do legally for annoying neighbors but what they are doing could potentially lead to harassment then, you could do something legally about it. The best option would to be just drop it and try not to let it get to you and once they se that theyâre not phasing you anymore they will probably stop eventually. But if your not the one to do the silent treatment them you could start being as annoying as them and see how they like itâŚ

A nice, natural way is to plant tall evergreen trees that can be grown as a shrub or be hedge to control height and width. I have the most nosy neighbors, so the first plants that I put into the ground was in a planting area closest to their nosy faces was a Bay Laural (Laurus nobilis), Pineapple Guava (Feijoa sellowiana), and for shrubs (Viburnum, Photinia) and lots of Bamboo. In the SF Bay Area, Bamboo works great, because it grows very fast after couple years, and if you want to annoy them back, plant Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra) because it is very invasive and will grow in their yard as well, and if they are not gardeners the Black Bamboo will take their yard over or plant Golden Bamboo (Bambusa âAlphonse Karrâ), or if you want to cover the view of an ugly large house or apartment building, try the Giant Timber Bamboo (Bambusa oldhammii), and the same tree/shrubs listed aboveâŚ.
âŚ.For the not so nice, and unnatural way is to find out what makes your neighbors tick? My neighbor is narcissistic, doesnât care much about his own wife, kids or trespassing into our yard, but he really cares âa lotâ about his money.
So, find out where he works, write a letter about his psychopath behavioral traits to the owner of his company, and warn them (you are just pushing karma about these jerk neighbors) and try to get the kook fired. If they own the business, contact their clients and note all the liabilities about your neighbor, but remain anonymous to avoid further conflict and retaliation from the neighbor. Once he loses his job and get a new job, ârinse and repeatâ, write another letter to his new employer. Once he starts to run out of money, his annoyances, disrespecting his neighbors will soon turn where he will be more concerned about paying his mortgage, instead of bugging you.
If you neighbor has kids, find anything to report him to the local authorities, or if he is a drunk, abusive or homeschooling their kids â call child protective services; but it has to be legitimate, so you are not wasting our police services on time.
Eventually you will become their annoying neighbor, but donât let down your guard, keep documenting, get cameraâs and if all fails walk by one of their lawn sprinklers, trip over and fall to the ground and sue the crap out of them

I live beneath my lardlord. He is a renter and I sublet from him. Heâs not a bad guy but he has mental illness and I suspect is on the spectrum of paranoid schizophrenia. Most during the winter months, he starts drinking alone and I can only speculate is off his medications. He spends hours yelling aloud to no one in particular. I live in the city and I am on disability for epilepsy. The rent is cheap and I am grateful for the home. A place to hang my hat. I think reacting with empathy and compassion is the best approach. Anger and hostility almost always a recipe for resentment and/or retaliation. Negativity puts others on the defensive. I think using honest non-passive-agressive communication is the best first approach. If that doesnât work, a stern approach explaining your need for peace or mind. If that fails, ultimatums perhaps. If that fails, itâs time to take action, either move out or use legal tactics. Remember though, no matter how bad people can behave, they have their own story. Best of luck to all of us\!

There are more types of bad neighbors. How about the neighbors that donât take care of their property? And you donât live in a neighborhood with an HOA? The neighbors that donât cut their grass or weeds. Dead plants just stay there until they start to decompose as they stand there. Neighbors who let their dog poop on your property but if they see your cat out they call the cops? Or a guy that outs out a dead fall trap in his backyard, doesnât work, but says heâll take care of it in 6 days? The lazy, crazy, stupid, filthy neighbors what do you do about those? Thatâs certainly worse than someone letting the yard they own become overgrown or them digging a pit on their own property. Horatio,
Please note, that while I do respect your hate for felines; cats will keep mice & rates away which is a benefit to the community. Due to my neighbor I can assure you that unkept yards will bring such scurrying creatures\!
Uninjured birds are much harder for cats to catch since they can very easily escape. There are 3 cats in my neighborhood & I have never seen them catch a bird. I have seen them taking moles/voles, mice, etc home to the their owners.
Also, a cat can keep the rabbit population in check and that will help perennials/vegetables not get eaten down. As long as the cat canât breed (spayed/neutered), it can be used in a beneficial way.

Unless it brings Rats. Weâve had this twice now, rats directly from 2 neighborâs houses, mainly from their food being out, BBQ never cleaned, no clean up after dogs.
We got an Exterminator, they had to come for a full year. The rats and similar love weeds, hiding spots, piles of wood. Hell, theyâve got an entire broken 8-person hot tub, rats live under that thing, chase their dog. Total trash.

Read âCat Wars.â Also, research the impact on cats on the environment. KEEP YOUR CAT INDOORS. They are not native to anywhere (even the origin species from the Middle East is far different from the man-made pet species.) and are devastating to the environment. Whole species of birds are routinely rendered extinct just byintroducing cats into their areas. Cats are a DISTASTER.

Best thing to do is to compile evidence in the form of recordings, videos, photos. Submit those to the landlord. This works well if the renters are in some way harming the value of the property or else giving cause for concern about liability. Sometimes you can write up your own âCease & Desistâ order and submit that to the landlord, via certified mail (to make sure it was received). Include photos, any proof regarding police reports done (dates, case \#s, etc). Threaten to sue the landlord. This usually works wonders. No one wants to end up in a costly court case.

I do not want to be friends with this lady and I do not want to talk to her every day. If I try to leave the house and she sees me, she comes running over to ask how Iâm doing and starts chatting. She watches who comes and goes from my house from her front window. As soon as someone leaves, she starts texting me to see what they were doing at my house. She texts me about other neighbors and if I know what so and so is doing. No, I donât know what so and so is doing because I donât care. I do not know how to get this woman to leave me alone.

By posting his identifying details online with unsubstantiated criticism and ad hominem attacks, you are committing libel and exposing yourself to potential litigation were he ever to find out. You may want to reconsider doing this in the future. On top of that, nothing you listed is worse than disparaging someoneâs good name in a public forum. Alas the selfishness of some neighbors is never ending. I am dealing with neighbors who seem to think it is Godâs given right to let their dog bark at night. When politely confronted they first lied (âIt wasnât our dogâ â âI saw you and it at 1 amâ â âOh well, umâŚâ) followed by stating their right to enjoy their dog (at 1 am) vs our rights as home owners âWhere do we draw the line?â they said. Fortunately the city animal control officer explained to them the ordinances and that âhumans come first.â They have dramatically improved, but are acting like we in some way assaulted their freedom and ruined their life. Simply standing up for our rights has created so much animosity with grown adults who are either insane or 4 year old babies in disguise. Oh, get this. The first thing they said to us when we moved in before they got their dog â âI hope your dog is quiet, if not we would have to have a conversation.â

They violate our city noise ordinance and resident quiet hours policy, but the landlord refuses to enforce. They have proven to be too ignorant to respond to polite requests, or comply with policies. The only remedy that works once in a great while, is to give them their own medicine so they might realize how it feels. With the chronically rude â you are forced to move.

So, a bad neighbor is anyone who lives next door (or next floor) and gets on your nerves regularly by doing something thatâs not particularly illegal but exceptionally annoying. If it becomes uncomfortable for you to stay home, chances are good itâs a bad neighbor to blame.
## What to Do About Bad Neighbors?
## What Types of Bad Neighbors Are There?
For the sake of simplicity, letâs group all nasty neighbors into three categories, from most minor to most annoying ones, and consider suggested courses of action for each.

## Type 1: Slightly Annoying Neighbors
***Common Examples:** Parents of not well-behaved kids whoâre screaming all day long, drivers who got it wrong about parking rules, irresponsible pet owners having a hard time taking care of their four-legged friends, overly friendly ladies who want to tell you their biography each time you meet, chronic borrowers.*
### Introduce Yourself and Get to Know Them Better
Thatâs what you need to do first thing if your neighbors start to annoy you regularly. Introducing yourself and letting your neighbors know what bothers you might make wonders. Firstly, people tend to be more ashamed and respectful of those they know personally. Secondly, there is a little chance that your neighbors have no idea they annoy you, and telling them so will solve the problem once and for all.
### Donât Accuse, Tell Them How it Makes You Feel
One of the most common mistakes is accusing neighbors from the start. A more intelligent approach would be telling them youâre bothered and annoyed but keeping the conversation friendly and polite. Try to find the root cause of your neighborâs bad behavior and offer to help if theyâve happened to deal with a problem that makes them behave in a particular way.
### Mirror the Behavior of Your Neighbor
A [widely-used psychological trick](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/beyond-words/201209/mimicry-and-mirroring-can-be-good-or-bad), mirroring your neighborâs behavior, might help them realize their fault and never do things that annoy you again. At the same time, this approach will help you get even with annoying neighbors (but only if youâre seeking revenge more than a solution to your neighbor-related problem).
### Consider Using Mediators
So wags the world that some people get along with each other with ease, while others find it hard to understand each otherâs concerns and feelings. If the second option describes your relationship with your neighbor, it makes a lot of sense to find a mediator willing to solve the problem for the benefit of both parties. If youâre renting, ask your landlord if they can mediate. As you send checks to your landlord every month (or [pay rent online](https://rentberry.com/pay-rent)), your comfort should also be their concern.
### Give a Warning (Concrete One)
Informing annoying neighbors about your willingness to contact their landlord or local precinct can sometimes do wonders. As long as you sound confident and concrete, a simple warning might make your neighbors stop doing things that annoy you.

***Common Examples:** Party animals dancing and drinking 24/7, gossipers who spread rumors about you or your family, and rock bands singing the same chords in a garage self-made studio.*
### Seek Support From Other Neighbors
Itâs always easier to achieve desired goals through joint efforts. If itâs likely that youâre not the only one unhappy about your neighborâs behavior, you should check if someone else is ready to side with you. This point is crucial if you contact the local precinct or file a complaint in court. In this case, quantity matters. The more people share your opinion, the more chances you have to win.
### Call Your Neighborâs Landlord
Most people donât like complaining or reporting on others, but sometimes, itâs the only way out. If your neighbors are long-term tenants, chances are good they donât want to be evicted. If this holds, your problem will likely be solved before you know it.
### Contact HOA (Homeowners Association)
This is probably one of the simplest ways to buy your neighbor out or stop their annoying behavior. In some cases, a manager of the association could talk to a noise-making neighbor and fine them if a simple warning is insufficient. Chances are good this step would solve the problem to a certain extent.
### Refer to the Governing Laws
If youâre dealing with noise, which is the most common reason for disputes between neighbors, refer to the letter of the law. [There are ordinances](https://www.findlaw.com/realestate/neighbors/what-to-do-about-a-neighbor-s-noise-faqs.html) to prohibit unnecessary, unreasonable, and excessive levels of noise meant to protect you from being a victim of noise-makers. If you can prove that the problem is real and your neighbor is a source, you can refer to a small claims court (for financial compensation) or a regular civil court (to cease the noise-maker).

## Type 3: Exceptionally Annoying Neighbors
***Common Examples:** Psychos, sneaky stealers, garbage collectors, and criminals doing bad business right in front of your home.*
### Collect Evidence and Try to Force Your Neighbor to Move
If your neighborâs behavior is exceptionally irritating but not life-threatening, you may want to collect evidence and contact authorities (local precincts, cops, lawyers). Another option you have is to write a petition together with other neighbors. Have your petition signed by as many residents as possible and state a grievance and desired outcome. Once done, present it to the landlord or HOA. If [your complaint is legitimate](https://www.findlaw.com/realestate/neighbors/neighbor-disputes.html), the problem will be fixed relatively soon.
### Consider Moving to Another âHood
In some cases, the best decision is to move to another neighborhood. This is especially true if youâve tried to solve the problem differently, but nothing helped. Not to mention the situations when living with a nasty neighbor, which is annoying and dangerous. If youâre sure the person next door is involved in illegal business or is a psycho whose behavior might pose a threat to your health, report the problem to the police and move out from your current place of residence as fast as possible.
## Bad Neighbors FAQ
- **Who would you usually call a bad neighbor?**
Bad neighbors can exhibit various behaviors, such as excessive noise, property neglect, rude interactions, or constant disturbances. Any behavior that negatively impacts your living environment can indicate a bad neighbor.
- **What should I do if I have bad neighbors?**
If youâre dealing with bad neighbors, your approach should be determined by the level of annoyance they cause. Start with a friendly conversation to address the issue. If a friendly approach doesnât work, consider more drastic measures or involve authorities.
- **What should I do if my neighbor is consistently noisy?**
If noise is the problem, approach your neighbor politely and tell them how their noise affects you. If the issue persists, check your local noise ordinances and consider involving your landlord or building management if you rent. As a last resort, you might need to contact the local authorities.
- **How can I handle a neighbor whoâs intrusive or too nosy?**
Set boundaries with such neighbors and clarify when their behavior makes you uncomfortable. Maintain a respectful but firm demeanor to ensure they understand your privacy needs. If the behavior continues, limit interactions and avoid sharing personal information.
- **When should I involve a third party, like the landlord or authorities?**
If direct communication doesnât resolve the issue, involving a third party may be necessary. Inform your landlord or property manager about the situation if youâre renting. In extreme cases, such as illegal activities or harassment, contacting local law enforcement might be best.
## On a Final Note
In some cases, neighbors might be the absolute nightmare next door. If it happens, peopleâs most common (and most natural) reaction is to arrange a lousy neighborâs revenge, find out how to get even with bad neighbors, or even get them to move. But no matter what happens, remember that conflicts are best resolved through negotiations, not wars. Talk to your neighbors, tell them what bothers you, and propose a solution. Only refer to authorities if a friendly approach doesnât work or you have grounds to assume that your neighbors might have a history with the law.
