The rabbits smell worse than my chickens do, so I would not worry so much about the ammonia. If you are just going to do meat birds I would NOT suggest roosts - Cornish X and other fast growing meat birds have some serious joint issues from growing so fast, a roost (if they would even use it) is a recipe for disaster lots of blown knees, etc. If the rabbits are 4' off the ground the birds should not bother them from underneath, though you might try to keep them from getting on top. I put lots of hay on the top of my cages the chickens nest up there, the rabbits can nibble the bottom of the hay if they want (they rarely do since they also have hay racks always full) but it keeps any accidents from falling down. So I have hens jumping up on top of the cages I think it startled the does the first day I moved them in there now it totally doesn't phase them. I have catch pans under all my cages because I like to move the droppings to the garden, but a friend houses her bucks over her birds with just drop-through cages the birds love the pellets and any dropped bits of food. They stir the droppings and reduce the problems with ammonia, etc. Also I deep litter bed my birds that is why their pens do not smell, the hens will stir the bedding fine but young birds need help so I stir it about once a week. I am in a very humid area so I use straw, not shavings as the shavings just hold the moisture and mold. __________ Fri Mar 08, 2013 9:38 pm __________ Oh I should add I have does with kits in the isle of my chicken barn and my bucks are in an area the chickens love to be as well when they free range - the bottom of my cages are only about maybe 3' off the ground and have had zero problems the birds just want the rabbit's food when they realize they can't reach it they move on, that took them all of ten minutes to figure out now they just see the rabbit cages as a beautiful accessory to their ohmygodsoexpensivecanteverletmyhubbyseethereciepts coop... However I have to keep an eye on the turkey when I pull nestboxes and am checking on kits she would happily take one off my hands if they are down at her level

We have had far too many frustrations with the rabbits, having lost several litters of newborn kits throughthe winter. Along with the rising prices of pellets, we are finding they are not a cost effective means of raising for food, as well as a lot more work than we planned on. SO we are going to drop down to 3 does and 1 buck, so we will still have the pellets for garden fertilizer, and the ability to still do a few litters for meat. SO, my question is can I raise meat chickens in the same shed? The rabbit cages are about 4 feet off the floor. My thought was to cover floor with straw, and put some roosts just off the floor for about 20 meat chickens beneath the rabbits. IS this a good or bad idea? I can run a piece of chicken wire just beneath the bottoms of the cages to prevent any pecking from below if need be, but would the chickens stress the rabbits, particularly does with kits? The important thing is to keep the birds off of the top of the cages, but that might not be an issue with a heavy meat bird. The chicken wire sub floor is a good idea. We have one member who lost a litter of kits to chickens. The chickens will likely eat all of the rabbit droppings. I have a quarantine cage in my chicken coop and there are absolutely no rabbit droppings under the cage EVER. I believe Joel Salatin pioneered the idea, and calls it a Raken House. Meat breeds tend to poop a LOT and STINK. Rabbits poop a LOT. Make sure it is well ventilated and you can clean it out often and the chickens all have room to move about, not that they will after they get too big. Meat chickens tend to be lazy because of their heavier size. If the coop is well ventilated and cleaned out on a regular basis, I think you'd be fine. I would also either really slant the tops of the rabbit cages or add something on top of them to prevent roosting on top of them. If you decide to go this way, I would love to see pics of the set up. Our chicken coop/run would be a great space for quarantine rabbit cages for us. We just built a coop off the side of the rabbitry for them, too, but they have constant access to the rabbitry. They do dig and stir the deep bed pine shavings I have under there. You have to have it for the whole floor, not just under the rabbits, because it will be on the whole floor anyway. The chickens haven't bothered the rabbits, except for once or twice trying to figure a way to get on top of the cages. The cages are about 3.5 feet off the ground.
