The aircraft disappeared one hour before it was scheduled to land in China.\nThere were 227 passengers and 12 crew members from 14 different countries on board.\nThe pilot in command, 53-year-old Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah from Penang, joined Malaysia Airlines as a cadet pilot in 1981, while the co-pilot, 27-year-old First Officer Fariq Abdul Hamid, was completing his final training flight with Flight 370.\nA search-and-rescue mission commenced shortly after MH370 disappeared. On Tuesday, Dec. 30, a spokesperson for the U.S.-based marine exploration company [Ocean Infinity](https://oceaninfinity.com/) said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE that the search for the wreckage has resumed, more than a decade after its disappearance. "With the support of the Malaysian Government, we are resuming the search for the missing aircraft MH370," the spokesperson said. "Due to the important and sensitive nature of this search, formal communications will come through the Malaysian Government." The company will use underwater vehicles, deep-sea drones and advanced scanning technology to search a 6,000-mile stretch of the Indian Ocean, according to [NBC News](https://www.nbcnews.com/world/asia/mh370-search-missing-malaysia-airlines-flight-resumes-rcna251313).
