Boilerpipe Text
The New Paltz Oracle stands in solidarity with the Black Student Union, Jennifer Ortiz and the over 1,600 petitioning students that are calling for the teaching contract of beloved lecturer Anthony Dandridge to be immediately renewed by the university.  Anthony Dandridge is a lecturer in the Department of Black Studies. He is also one of the most beloved, outspoken and active professors at SUNY New Paltz. Dandridge joined SUNY New Paltz at the start of the 2018-19 school year. Since joining he has been a powerful advocate and voice for Black students and Black Studies.  In addition to being a professor, he co-founded and is now the Director of the Black Lives Matter at School Collective at SUNY New Paltz, and he is a Co-Chair of the SUNY Black Faculty and Staff Collective. He is also a New Paltz Faculty Sustainability Fellow, which means he aims to integrate environmental justice into his teachings.  Throughout his time as a professor, Dandridge frequently engaged with the student body, speaking at campus events like The Eddy’s annual Sound Your Truth event, Black Solidarity Day and TEDxSUNY New Paltz. He has led or been involved in several campus diversity committees and is a delegate for and active member of the Union of University Professionals.  At The Oracle , Dandridge is a frequent contributor, submitting often to our Faculty in Focus column and assisting, via multiple submissions, with our Black History Issue and Unified Press collaboration with The Fahari Libertad. According to a change.org petition created by Ortiz , Dandridge told his students during a class he was teaching on March 20, that his teaching contract would not be renewed after the end of the Spring 2026 semester. He did not provide further explanation as to why this occurred.  Letting Dandridge’s contract expire at this time is an affront to the values of our student body. Our university, which proudly hosts the second oldest Black Studies department in the nation, is making a grave mistake by letting someone so foundational to both the department and our campus depart the university.  As of 2023, 151 bills have been introduced across the nation aiming to ban diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in higher education, targeting departments, curricula and faculty members. This is the time for universities to be doubling down in their support of diverse faculty, programming and departments, not letting go of faculty like Dandridge, who dedicate their lives to building more equitable campuses and communities.  We urge all students to sign the above petition. We call on the university to listen to its student body and make the right decision.  Post Views: 1,303

Specifically, students must vote to keep the Student Activity Fee mandatory or else risk losing all that makes New Paltz special. The Student Activity Fee is a mandatory \$105 fee that students pay when enrolling in classes. This fee funds all clubs along with other services and campus events such as Oasis Haven, Black Solidarity Day, legal counsel for students and the Student Association, the governing body of the student population. If this fee is allowed to be made optional, your club will be defunded. If this vote is made optional, your independent student media will be defunded. If this vote is optional, your mental health and legal services will be defunded. These services are used frequently by our students to better both their on-campus and private lives. Without this fee, these students will be left without support. These clubs provide spaces for recreation, community bonding and relaxation against the constant demand from grueling academic classes and workplaces. They create outlets for our vulnerable populations, BIPOC communities, LGBTQ+ communities and disabled communities, to exist freely in spite of this presidential administration’s priorities to eliminate them from existence, especially in higher education. They stand as a source for activism, education and on-the-ground action that creates real change both on campus and in the broader community….
