TL;DR:
Want to level up your mindset, habits, and creativity? These 7 self-improvement books are total game-changers. From Atomic Habits teaching you how to make lasting changes, to The Gifts of Imperfection helping you embrace your flawsâeach book has the power to shift how you think, work, and live.
From as young as I can remember, Iâve always loved reading.
Books allow me to tap into my imagination and escape into another world.
But since starting my online business, I no longer have a monogamous relationship with fiction books. I now find myself gravitating more towards the personal development and self-help aisle
rather than beach reads.
Yes, reading self-help books can sometimes feel like a chore. Personal development is exhausting at times and sometimes seems quite arduous. But for me, there is something about reading these types of books.
They fill me with positive energy.
By the closing chapter, I feel somewhat accomplished. I say to myself, âI managed to finish this hefty book, Iâm clearly capable of something!â It makes me feel motivated and inspired to start improving and growing as a person.
So while reading
my latest non-fiction
, I reflected on the other self-help books Iâve read in the past couple of years. There were some that I loved, and some that I didnât love so much. And there were some that provided me with guidance at a time when I needed it most.
Itâs these self-improvement books that have stayed with me and changed my life for the better.
So I wanted to share them with you in the hopes that they will also inspire you on your personal development journey.
Here are the 7 best self-improvement books that I think everyone needs to read at least once.
P.S.Â
If youâre new here, hey! Iâm Thalia.

I help burnt-out girlies like you build a life thatâs aligned, magnetic, and unapologetically yours. Every week(ish), I share content on burnout recovery, self-development, finding joy, and career growth.Â

Saying that these self-improvement
books have changed my life
is not an understatement.
They have given my life more meaning, boosted my self-awareness and provided me with self-love.
Whenever I read a self-help book, I always underline the words and lines that mean the most to me. I then transfer my underlinings
into Notion
, where I can easily access them. And I always find myself coming back to these 7 books and re-reading the quotes I so thoughtfully underlined.
So it is these 7 self-improvement books that I consider to be the best:
Atomic Habits
by James Clear
The Gifts of Imperfection
by Brené Brown
Stay & Slay
by Thalia-Maria Tourikis
The Mountain Is You
by Brianna Wiest
The Daily Stoic
by Ryan Holiday
Start With Why
 by Simon Sinek
Big Magic
by Elizabeth Gilbert
Mindset
by Carol Dweck
1 | Atomic Habits by James Clear
Just as the title says,
Atomic Habits
is all about habits. How to build good ones and break bad ones.
You might be thinking, how can a book on habits be so popular?
James Clear shows us that habit-building can be easy and fun. Itâs not as boring or arduous as you might think.
And by making these tiny changes, you are setting yourself up to achieve remarkable results.
Highlights
Easy to read and digestible
The contents of the book are laid out well
Includes diagrams
Summary at the end of each chapter
Tips and advice are all extremely actionable
Iâve previously written a review
, so you know itâs worth a read
Million copy #1 bestseller
My thoughts
Atomic Habits
has literally changed the way I view habits. I now build habits to work for me rather than against me.
And in all honesty, Atomic Habits was actually the motivating factor behind my blog.
Before I read this book, I was constantly comparing myself to others online and copying what female entrepreneurs were doing to be productive. Long story short, the hustle culture didnât work for me, and I thought there was something wrong with me.
But when I read Atomic Habits, James Clear made me feel less alone. It wasnât the fact that there was something wrong with me; it was the fact that these âproductivity hacks from othersâ didnât suit my personality.
So I applied his advice on building habits to my own work ethic. I then started to view productivity as unique to the individual and built it around my own personality and lifestyle.
My mindful approach to productivity was born, and so was the basis of my blog. I wanted to show others that there is a more sustainable way of working, and this is where it all started.
So yes, like the cover says, Atomic Habits is truly life-changing!
âThere is a version of every habit that can bring you joy and satisfaction. Find it. Habits need to be enjoyable if they are going to stick⊠tailoring your habits to your personality is a good start.â
James Clear | Atomic Habits
2 | The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown
Quite simply put,Â
The Gifts of Imperfection
teaches us how to live a wholehearted life.
And to do that, we need to embrace our flaws, vulnerabilities and imperfections. We need to step into our truth, own our story and live a truly authentic life.
And the daily tools needed for this are courage, compassion and connection, our gifts of imperfection.
Highlights
Actionable and digestible advice
Spread out over 10 chapters, otherwise known as guideposts
Thereâs a
dig-deep
section at the end of each guidepost, which encourages you to explore each topic on a deeper level
Includes top tips, questions to ask yourself and resources for further reading
Space at the back to make a note of the pages that spoke to you the most
10th Anniversary Edition features a foreword by Brené herself
Iâve previously written a review
, so you know itâs worth a read
My thoughts
Iâm a devoted BrenĂ© Brown fan. Iâve read a few of her books, listened to her podcast and watched her talk on
TED
and
Netflix.
BrenĂ© provides me with so much guidance. The guidance that I donât usually get from other people in my life or from social media.
In
The Gifts of Imperfection,
Brené Brown proves once again that she has a way with words.
She speaks directly to the soul and sparks something inside.
I honestly still get shivers from this book.
It taught me how to start letting go of the things holding me back, like fear, comparison and perfectionism and start cultivating the things I need more of, like intuition, gratitude and laughter.
Seriously, what more do you want from a book?
âOwning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we will ever do.â
Brené Brown | The Gifts of Imperfection
3 | Stay & Slay: How To Beat Burnout Without Quitting Your Job
Okay, so this one is a bit of a shameless plug, but hey, itâs my blog, and I know for a fact that itâs exactly what you need.
Stay & Slay
helps you understand whatâs really burning you out and teaches you how to rebuild your energy and confidence in a way that feels realistic, doable, and supportive.
Because if you ask me, you shouldnât have to choose between an ambitious career and your well-being. You can have both.
Highlights
Reflection prompts that help you figure out whatâs really burning you out
My signature
Anti-Burnout Frameworkâą
is built into every page, so you have a clear roadmap to follow
Actionable and realistic tips to help you navigate and beat burnout for good
Hear from my clients whoâve been where you are now and come out stronger
Includes a bonus workbook, so you can SLAY-as-you-go and actually put every strategy into action
Itâs written by me, so you know itâs full of value
My thoughts
This is the book
I wish I had when I was deep in burnout and thought the only way out was quitting.
Donât get me wrong, my job was toxic, and I knew I couldnât stay. But after walking away, it took me another few years to figure out how to recover from burnout and build a
career that actually feels good.
This book is everything I learned along the way (minus all the trial and error).
âIt will get better. You will experience better things, meet better people and step into a job (and life) that feels better. You will become better, stronger, and more aligned with who youâre meant to be. Trust the process, because the best is yet to come.â
Thalia-Maria Tourikis | Stay & Slay
4 | The Mountain Is You by Brianna Wiest
Throughout history, mountains have symbolised big challenges, much like the ones we face within ourselves. This is the message Brianna Wiest brings into
The Mountain Is You.
This book is your go-to guide to understanding why we hold ourselves back and how to
break free from self-sabotage.
The Mountain Is You will take you on a journey with practical insights and tools to help you unleash your full potential and conquer lifeâs challenges through âself-masteryâ.
Highlights
A life-changing read which is a must for everyone
Explore how you can overcome self-sabotage through self-mastery
A well-written book with a supportive and friendly tone of voice
Powerful and emotional
Iâve written a book review
, so you know itâs worth a read
Reading this book is an act of self-care
My thoughts
Iâve been following
Brianna Wiest on Instagram
for a while now, and her thoughtful and mindful quotes always set the right tone for my day. They make me stop, think and question how I want to show up for myself that day and in life.
So if you read any book from this list, make sure it is
The Mountain Is You
â it will be an act of self-care within itself.
âIf we want to change the world, we change ourselves. If we want to change our lives, we change ourselves. If we want to scale the greatest mountains before us, we change how we arrive at the path.â
Brianna Wiest | The Mountain Is You
5 | The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday
Adopting a Stoic practice in your life can reduce anxiety,
help you avoid distractions
and teach you gratitude. However, thereâs so much written on Stoicism that it can be hard to know where to start.
Ryan Holidayâs
The Daily Stoic
makes learning about Stoicism digestible and intentional.
This isnât a typical book as itâs not split into chapters. Instead, The Daily Stoic is separated into a page-a-day to make practising Stoicism more manageable.
Each page features a powerful lesson or quote from the Ancient Stoics, including Marcus Aurelius, the playwright Seneca and philosopher Epictetus, among others.
These thought-provoking observations help you âto tackle any problem, approach any goal and find the serenity, self-knowledge and resilience you need to live well.â
(The Daily Stoic)
Highlights
Includes 366 meditations on wisdom, perseverance and the art of living
Features lessons from the Ancient Stoics, including Marcus Aurelius, Seneca and Epictetus
Page-a-day guide; no need to read it all in one go
Itâs dated daily from 1st January to 31st December
Daily doses of practical, uplifting philosophy
From the best-selling author of
The Obstacle Is The Way
Thereâs a guided
Daily Stoic Journal
that accompanies the book to make it even easier for you to practice mindfulness
My thoughts
I havenât finished
The Daily Stoic
yet, as itâs a year-long process.
However, itâs already been incredibly life-changing for both me and my husband. It has positively impacted our minds in a way where we are learning to ignore the things we canât control and focus only on what we can change.
So if youâre looking to cultivate more meaning and self-awareness this year, then The Daily Stoic is the best self-help book for you.
âYou have power over your mind â not outside events. Realise this, and you will find strength.â
Marcus Aurelius
6 | Start With Why by Simon Sinek
Start With Why
explores the fundamental question of why some leaders are able to inspire and motivate others while others struggle to do so.
Drawing on real-life examples (mainly Apple), Simon Sinek explains that the key lies in understanding and communicating the âwhyâ behind our actions â the deep-rooted causes and beliefs that drive us.
Whether you are an aspiring leader, entrepreneur, or simply seeking personal growth, Start With Why provides you with a blueprint for discovering your ownÂ
why
and leveraging it to inspire others so you can
live withÂ
real
 purpose.
Highlights
Inspiring quotes you can refer back to again and again
Part of a 3-book series which also includes a practical guide to Find Your Why
Uses well-known companies and individuals to back up his points, e.g. Martin Luther King Jr.
Based onÂ
the life-changing Ted Talk
Multi-million-copy bestseller
My thoughts
I readÂ
Start With Why
during a time when I was figuring out the next steps forÂ
Notes by Thalia
and what I envision for my brand.
This book has given me the guidance and space I needed to really dig deep and figure out theÂ
core
of what I use this space for and get really clear on myÂ
why
.
It hasÂ
levelled up my productivity
and given me so much motivation as a result.
In short, it is a book that has changed the way I show up and has greatly improved my business life. I also think it is a book that everyone needs to read, no matter where you are on your self-discovery journey.
So, if
youâre feeling a little lost,
then read
Start With Why,
as it will help you find your purpose.
âThe work weâre doing now is better than the work we were doing six months ago. And the work weâll be doing six months from now will be better than the work weâre doing today. Because we wake up every day with a sense of WHY we come to work. We come to work to inspire people to do the things that inspire them.â
Simon Sinek | Start WIth Why
7 | Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert
Elizabeth Gilbert takes on the role of a life coach in
Big Magic.
She shares her unique perspective on living a creative life that is led by curiosity and not by fear. Big Magic consists of Gilbertâs past life lessons, real stories and her timeless wisdom to draw out a road map of how we can gain the courage to pursue our own creative endeavours.
Highlights
Not your typical boring self-help book
Features a bright, colourful cover which will look great on any bookshelf
More like a guidebook teaching you how to deal with your doubts, how to observe ideas and how to act upon them without fear
Gilbert writes as though she is writing to a friend
Matter-of-fact, screw-the-norm tone of voice
Written by the author of the international bestseller
Eat Pray Love
My thoughts
Big Magic
taught me that I should never feel embarrassed about building a creative business. Iâm doing it for me, because I enjoy being creative, and that is all that matters.
There seems to be such a stigma around creative work, and Iâm glad Elizabeth Gilbert has finally spoken up about the fact that it should be treated the same as non-creative work.
So, if you feel like youâre hiding your true creative self, then read Big Magic and cultivate the creativity you need to live a life that is truly your own.
âAlways remember that peopleâs judgements about you, are none of your business.â
Elizabeth Gilbert | Big Magic
8 | Mindset by Carol Dweck
Mindset by Carol Dweck
is a fundamental book that everyone should read.
It explores the power of our mindset and how success doesnât just depend on our abilities or talent but rather on how we approach our goals: with a fixed or growth mindsetâŁ.
This book is all about changing the way we think to fulfil our potential.
Highlights
The whole book is simply mind-blowing
Explore the difference between a fixed and growth mindset
Includes chapters for every area of our life
Uses well-known and famous people as examples to back up her points e.g. Michael Jordan
Includes diagrams
The book has recently been updated
Iâve previously written a review
, so you know itâs worth a read
My thoughts
I must admit that I was slightly apprehensive about reading
this book at first.
Carol is one of the worldâs leading researchers in personality and social and developmental psychology, so I felt that it would be highly academic and difficult to understand.
But itâs the complete opposite. Carol wanted this book to be digestible and easy to follow.
And thatâs exactly what it is.
So if youâre going to buy one of the self-help books from this list, make sure itâs this one, and invest in your mindset.
âMindsets are just beliefs. Theyâre powerful beliefs, but theyâre just something in your mind, and you can change your mind.â
Carol Dweck | Mindset
Why read self-improvement books?
Self-improvement books lead to positive change.
They help you
learn more about yourself
while also providing you with the guidance and skills you need to help improve different areas of your life.
I honestly wouldnât be the person I am today without the help of these books.
Brené Brown has worked wonders on my mind, soul and well-being. James Clear has changed my entire perspective on habits and what it means to be productive. Elizabeth Gilbert has provided me with the confidence I need to continue pursuing my creative business. Carol Dweck has opened up my eyes to what it means to truly
have a growth mindset.
Simon Sinek has changed the way I show up in my business.
And I continue to look inward as I learn more about how Stoicism and self-mastery can change my thinking for the better.
In a rush? Save this list on Pinterest for later!
Final thoughts
I hope you feel inspired by this post and have the motivation to kickstart your self-development journey. Or continue the one youâre already on.
If youâre looking
to become your best self,
then I honestly canât recommend these self-improvement books enough.
They will provide you with the guidance and awareness you need to grow.
And just to recap, the books I mentioned in this post are:

[Atomic Habits](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Atomic-Habits-Proven-Build-Break/dp/1847941834?keywords=atomic+habits&qid=1647956741&s=books&sprefix=atomic%2Cstripbooks%2C298&sr=1-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=notesbythal00-21&linkId=0468c5bd71f34e66228da2955e43b5f4&language=en_GB&ref_=as_li_ss_tl) has literally changed the way I view habits.
So yes, like the cover says, Atomic Habits is truly life-changing\!

#### My thoughts
Iâm a devoted BrenĂ© Brown fan. Iâve read a few of her books, listened to her podcast and watched her talk on [TED](https://www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_the_power_of_vulnerability?language=en) and [Netflix.](https://www.netflix.com/search?q=call%20to%20courage&jbv=81010166)
BrenĂ© provides me with so much guidance. The guidance that I donât usually get from other people in my life or from social media.
In [The Gifts of Imperfection,](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gifts-Imperfection-Anniversary-Brand-New-paperback/dp/1616499605?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1647956829&sr=1-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=notesbythal00-21&linkId=ccec3c31fc5dbe6791c30fc6e31b684f&language=en_GB&ref_=as_li_ss_tl) Brené Brown proves once again that she has a way with words.

### 5 \| The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday
Adopting a Stoic practice in your life can reduce anxiety, [help you avoid distractions](https://dailystoic.com/benefits-stoicism/) and teach you gratitude. However, thereâs so much written on Stoicism that it can be hard to know where to start.
Ryan Holidayâs [The Daily Stoic](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Daily-Stoic-Meditations-Perseverance-translations/dp/1781257655?crid=2LZN8JEF39UE6&keywords=the+daily+stoic&qid=1647957043&s=books&sprefix=the+daily+stoic%2Cstripbooks%2C273&sr=1-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=notesbythal00-21&linkId=f77be232b1aed0c0cd9fe71a8ff07f68&language=en_GB&ref_=as_li_ss_tl) makes learning about Stoicism digestible and intentional.
These thought-provoking observations help you âto tackle any problem, approach any goal and find the serenity, self-knowledge and resilience you need to live well.â *(The Daily Stoic)*
#### Highlights
- Includes 366 meditations on wisdom, perseverance and the art of living
- Features lessons from the Ancient Stoics, including Marcus Aurelius, Seneca and Epictetus
- Page-a-day guide; no need to read it all in one go
- Itâs dated daily from 1st January to 31st December

However, itâs already been incredibly life-changing for both me and my husband. It has positively impacted our minds in a way where we are learning to ignore the things we canât control and focus only on what we can change.

I must admit that I was slightly apprehensive about reading [this book at first.](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mindset-Updated-Changing-Fulfil-Potential/dp/147213995X?crid=308NSHQG5WV6K&keywords=mindset&qid=1647956959&s=books&sprefix=mindse%2Cstripbooks%2C200&sr=1-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=notesbythal00-21&linkId=ff281ed7d93513eb6edc3c5d5a73cb62&language=en_GB&ref_=as_li_ss_tl)

## Why read self-improvement books?
Self-improvement books lead to positive change.
They help you [learn more about yourself](https://notesbythalia.com/future-self-journaling-prompts/) while also providing you with the guidance and skills you need to help improve different areas of your life.
Carol Dweck has opened up my eyes to what it means to truly [have a growth mindset.](https://notesbythalia.com/how-to-cultivate-a-positive-and-resilient-mindset/) Simon Sinek has changed the way I show up in my business.
And I continue to look inward as I learn more about how Stoicism and self-mastery can change my thinking for the better.

Building confidence takes time, but itâs definitely doable đ Start small by speaking out loud to the mirror, practicing in front of smaller groups first, then gradually work your way up. The more you do it, the more confident youâll feel. Youâve got this\!

| Readable Markdown | ## The 7 Best Self-Improvement Books That Everyone Needs To Read At Least Once
Published:
March 24th, 2022

TL;DR: Want to level up your mindset, habits, and creativity? These 7 self-improvement books are total game-changers. From Atomic Habits teaching you how to make lasting changes, to The Gifts of Imperfection helping you embrace your flawsâeach book has the power to shift how you think, work, and live.

**From as young as I can remember, Iâve always loved reading.**
**Books allow me to tap into my imagination and escape into another world.**
But since starting my online business, I no longer have a monogamous relationship with fiction books. I now find myself gravitating more towards the personal development and self-help aisle [rather than beach reads.](https://notesbythalia.com/best-contemporary-fiction-books/)
So while reading [my latest non-fiction](https://notesbythalia.com/the-let-them-theory-mel-robbins-book-review/), I reflected on the other self-help books Iâve read in the past couple of years.
**P.S.** If youâre new here, hey! Iâm Thalia.I help burnt-out girlies like you build a life thatâs aligned, magnetic, and unapologetically yours. Every week(ish), I share content on burnout recovery, self-development, finding joy, and career growth. [Subscribe here](https://notesbythalia.com/resources/newsletter/) so you never miss a debrief.
Saying that these self-improvement [books have changed my life](https://notesbythalia.com/books-to-survive-the-corporate-grind/) is not an understatement.
They have given my life more meaning, boosted my self-awareness and provided me with self-love.
Whenever I read a self-help book, I always underline the words and lines that mean the most to me. I then transfer my underlinings [into Notion](https://notesbythalia.com/notion-how-to-organize-your-life/), where I can easily access them. And I always find myself coming back to these 7 books and re-reading the quotes I so thoughtfully underlined.
So it is these 7 self-improvement books that I consider to be the best:
- [Atomic Habits](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Atomic-Habits-Proven-Build-Break/dp/1847941834?keywords=atomic+habits&qid=1647956741&s=books&sprefix=atomic%2Cstripbooks%2C298&sr=1-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=notesbythal00-21&linkId=0468c5bd71f34e66228da2955e43b5f4&language=en_GB&ref_=as_li_ss_tl) by James Clear

### 1 \| Atomic Habits by James Clear
Just as the title says, [Atomic Habits](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Atomic-Habits-Proven-Build-Break/dp/1847941834?keywords=atomic+habits&qid=1647956741&s=books&sprefix=atomic%2Cstripbooks%2C298&sr=1-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=notesbythal00-21&linkId=0468c5bd71f34e66228da2955e43b5f4&language=en_GB&ref_=as_li_ss_tl) is all about habits.
#### Highlights
- Easy to read and digestible
- The contents of the book are laid out well
- Includes diagrams
- Summary at the end of each chapter
- Tips and advice are all extremely actionable
- [Iâve previously written a review](https://notesbythalia.com/atomic-habits-book-review/), so you know itâs worth a read
- Million copy \#1 bestseller
[](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Atomic-Habits-Proven-Build-Break/dp/1847941834?keywords=atomic+habits&qid=1647956741&s=books&sprefix=atomic%2Cstripbooks%2C298&sr=1-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=notesbythal00-21&linkId=0468c5bd71f34e66228da2955e43b5f4&language=en_GB&ref_=as_li_ss_tl)
#### My thoughts
[Atomic Habits](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Atomic-Habits-Proven-Build-Break/dp/1847941834?keywords=atomic+habits&qid=1647956741&s=books&sprefix=atomic%2Cstripbooks%2C298&sr=1-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=notesbythal00-21&linkId=0468c5bd71f34e66228da2955e43b5f4&language=en_GB&ref_=as_li_ss_tl) has literally changed the way I view habits.
So yes, like the cover says, Atomic Habits is truly life-changing\!
> âThere is a version of every habit that can bring you joy and satisfaction. Find it. Habits need to be enjoyable if they are going to stick⊠tailoring your habits to your personality is a good start.â

### 2 \| The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown
Quite simply put, [The Gifts of Imperfection](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gifts-Imperfection-Anniversary-Brand-New-paperback/dp/1616499605?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1647956829&sr=1-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=notesbythal00-21&linkId=ccec3c31fc5dbe6791c30fc6e31b684f&language=en_GB&ref_=as_li_ss_tl) teaches us how to live a wholehearted life.
And to do that, we need to embrace our flaws, vulnerabilities and imperfections. We need to step into our truth, own our story and live a truly authentic life.
And the daily tools needed for this are courage, compassion and connection, our gifts of imperfection.
#### Highlights
- Actionable and digestible advice
- Spread out over 10 chapters, otherwise known as guideposts
- Thereâs a *dig-deep* section at the end of each guidepost, which encourages you to explore each topic on a deeper level
- Includes top tips, questions to ask yourself and resources for further reading
- Space at the back to make a note of the pages that spoke to you the most
- 10th Anniversary Edition features a foreword by Brené herself
- [Iâve previously written a review](https://notesbythalia.com/book-review-the-gifts-of-imperfection-by-brene-brown/), so you know itâs worth a read
[](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gifts-Imperfection-Anniversary-Brand-New-paperback/dp/1616499605?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1647956829&sr=1-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=notesbythal00-21&linkId=ccec3c31fc5dbe6791c30fc6e31b684f&language=en_GB&ref_=as_li_ss_tl)

#### My thoughts
[This is the book](https://notesbythalia.com/resources/ebook-stay-and-slay/) I wish I had when I was deep in burnout and thought the only way out was quitting.

#### My thoughts
I havenât finished [The Daily Stoic](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Daily-Stoic-Meditations-Perseverance-translations/dp/1781257655?crid=2LZN8JEF39UE6&keywords=the+daily+stoic&qid=1647957043&s=books&sprefix=the+daily+stoic%2Cstripbooks%2C273&sr=1-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=notesbythal00-21&linkId=f77be232b1aed0c0cd9fe71a8ff07f68&language=en_GB&ref_=as_li_ss_tl) yet, as itâs a year-long process.

I read [Start With Why](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Start-Why-Leaders-Inspire-Everyone-ebook/dp/B005JZD3B4?keywords=start+with+why+simon+sinek&qid=1687583127&sprefix=start+with+%2Caps%2C325&sr=8-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=notesbythal00-21&linkId=29e09e02a8d1b422caf02635fb7d9460&language=en_GB&ref_=as_li_ss_tl) during a time when I was figuring out the next steps for *Notes by Thalia* and what I envision for my brand.
This book has given me the guidance and space I needed to really dig deep and figure out the *core* of what I use this space for and get really clear on my *why*.
It has [levelled up my productivity](https://notesbythalia.com/best-productivity-books) and given me so much motivation as a result.

### 7 \| Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert
Elizabeth Gilbert takes on the role of a life coach in [Big Magic.](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Big-Magic-Creative-Living-Beyond/dp/1408866757?crid=WBMSRE5PBC5S&keywords=big+magic&qid=1647956899&s=books&sprefix=big+magiv%2Cstripbooks%2C182&sr=1-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=notesbythal00-21&linkId=60c6e2ba90f7725df360b29f574efe07&language=en_GB&ref_=as_li_ss_tl)
She shares her unique perspective on living a creative life that is led by curiosity and not by fear. Big Magic consists of Gilbertâs past life lessons, real stories and her timeless wisdom to draw out a road map of how we can gain the courage to pursue our own creative endeavours.
#### Highlights
- Not your typical boring self-help book
- Features a bright, colourful cover which will look great on any bookshelf
- More like a guidebook teaching you how to deal with your doubts, how to observe ideas and how to act upon them without fear
- Gilbert writes as though she is writing to a friend
- Matter-of-fact, screw-the-norm tone of voice

#### My thoughts
[Big Magic](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Big-Magic-Creative-Living-Beyond/dp/1408866757?crid=WBMSRE5PBC5S&keywords=big+magic&qid=1647956899&s=books&sprefix=big+magiv%2Cstripbooks%2C182&sr=1-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=notesbythal00-21&linkId=60c6e2ba90f7725df360b29f574efe07&language=en_GB&ref_=as_li_ss_tl) taught me that I should never feel embarrassed about building a creative business.

### 8 \| Mindset by Carol Dweck
[Mindset by Carol Dweck](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mindset-Updated-Changing-Fulfil-Potential/dp/147213995X?crid=308NSHQG5WV6K&keywords=mindset&qid=1647956959&s=books&sprefix=mindse%2Cstripbooks%2C200&sr=1-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=notesbythal00-21&linkId=ff281ed7d93513eb6edc3c5d5a73cb62&language=en_GB&ref_=as_li_ss_tl) is a fundamental book that everyone should read.
It explores the power of our mindset and how success doesnât just depend on our abilities or talent but rather on how we approach our goals: with a fixed or growth mindsetâŁ.
This book is all about changing the way we think to fulfil our potential.
#### Highlights
- The whole book is simply mind-blowing
- Explore the difference between a fixed and growth mindset
- Includes chapters for every area of our life
- Uses well-known and famous people as examples to back up her points e.g. Michael Jordan
- Includes diagrams
- The book has recently been updated
- [Iâve previously written a review](https://notesbythalia.com/mindset-book-review/), so you know itâs worth a read
[](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mindset-Updated-Changing-Fulfil-Potential/dp/147213995X?crid=308NSHQG5WV6K&keywords=mindset&qid=1647956959&s=books&sprefix=mindse%2Cstripbooks%2C200&sr=1-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=notesbythal00-21&linkId=ff281ed7d93513eb6edc3c5d5a73cb62&language=en_GB&ref_=as_li_ss_tl)
#### My thoughts
I must admit that I was slightly apprehensive about reading [this book at first.](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mindset-Updated-Changing-Fulfil-Potential/dp/147213995X?crid=308NSHQG5WV6K&keywords=mindset&qid=1647956959&s=books&sprefix=mindse%2Cstripbooks%2C200&sr=1-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=notesbythal00-21&linkId=ff281ed7d93513eb6edc3c5d5a73cb62&language=en_GB&ref_=as_li_ss_tl)

## Why read self-improvement books?
Self-improvement books lead to positive change.
They help you [learn more about yourself](https://notesbythalia.com/future-self-journaling-prompts/) while also providing you with the guidance and skills you need to help improve different areas of your life.
