| Boilerpipe Text | Atomic Habits, published in 2018, is a bestselling book written by James Clear. It became popular for its new approaches on applying good habits and eliminating bad ones, all for having a better life. This book even became one of the fastest books to receive nearly 1 million ratings on Goodreads. Let’s delve into this book to see what’s inside.
The content
Flipping through the pages of this book, the content is divided into chapters, giving readers a sense of order and logic. James Clear will lead us to the previous time when he recovered from the injuries that almost took his life immediately and how he became better and better by building good habits as well as breaking off bad habits. After “listening” to his story, he will tell us more about the definition, the long – lasting effects of habits, how it changes our identity, etc. The next four chapters, which are the main parts of the book, are the core principles of changing habits. In other words, they are all James Clear’s distinctive rules of making tiny changes, including: make it obvious, make it attractive, make it easy and make it satisfying. Interestingly, not only James gives us these rules to move toward attaining good habits but also shares their inversions (or known as the reversals) in order to get rid of the bad ones. As the book comes to an end, the author will give us some tips and pieces of advice on being truly superior once we have become merely good from acquiring good habits in a long period of time.
The Best Parts
As soon as I finished this book, I quickly noted down every detail and figure that made me think, contemplating about it over and over. After a few days of revising what I have learned from this book, these were the details that I acknowledged the most:
0,1% better each day means 37% better each year
Looking at this detail, I think of 2 main ideas and I do think that they have a connection to each other: The more we learn, the more we improve ourselves and as we learn, our base of knowledge begins to expand, we slowly become better than who we were yesterday. However, if we don’t make attempts to learn or absorb, we will always remain the same at 0,1% like who we were on previous days.
The progress line is not always linear
In the long run, we always expect progress to be stable. But the truth is, we are settling in reality. Along with the ups are the downs that will inevitably appear on our road to reaching our goals, so be prepared to overcome them as they will help you grow better, bolder and stronger.
A creative approach to habits
Apart from the traditional ways of demonstrating the habit – changing strategies, which are lengthy and complicated, James has a totally contrasting way of approaching the subject of habits. Instead of explaining endlessly a strategy with statistics and lots of theories, he just keeps all of the strategies short, simple, practical and captivating to the readers. This could explain why his book became a bestseller for months.Â
Final thoughts
All in all, this is an interesting read for anyone who wants to enjoy and learn the new tactics, new rules of replacing bad habits with good habits. This book has a combination of both Gen-Y and Gen-Z writing styles, which attracts a majority of the book audience. To me, this is the book that shaped my personality and I still read it over and over whenever I’m free.Â
