| Boilerpipe Text | When I was a kid, renting PG-13 movies was like a badge of honor. They were the upper limit of what I was allowed to watch, and they let me get a taste of what the R-rated world would really be like in the future.
My favorite part of this world was the idea that you got one F-bomb to use. And it felt like every PG-13 movie learned this and got really creative with how they'd use it moving forward.
But what were the ones that stuck with me? The most fun uses of the word that shook my young soul and got me to regularly quote these scenes with my friends on the playground?
Let's dive in.
1. X-Men: First Class (2011)
Director:
Matthew Vaughn
Writers:
Ashley Edward Miller, Zack Stentz, Jane Goldman, Matthew Vaughn
Cast:
James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Kevin Bacon, Jennifer Lawrence, January Jones
Wolverine’s cameo delivered exactly what we wanted from the moment. As young Professor X and Magneto approach Logan in a bar to recruit him, he doesn't even look up from his drink before delivering a crisp, "Go f* yourself." It perfectly captures the character's essence in three seconds and the word, too.
2. The Martian (2015)
Director:
Ridley Scott
Writer:
Drew Goddard
Cast:
Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Chiwetel Ejiofor
Mark Watney (Damon) realizes survival on Mars is nearly impossible. He's been through hell on earth to just be alive, and now realises he has to terraform a planet to get out of there. All he can muster is a "F*** you, Mars." And we love him for it.
3. Moneyball (2011)
Director:
Bennett Miller
Writers:
Steven Zaillian, Aaron Sorkin
Cast:
Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Robin Wright
This is a movie about being the smartest guy in the world and then trying to convince everyone of that fact. Billy Beane was fed up when they weren't listening to him. And he delivered a great, "Then what the f*** are you talking about, man?"
4. Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004)
Director:
Rawson Marshall Thurber
Writer:
Rawson Marshall Thurber
Cast:
Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor, Rip Torn, Justin Long
You know it's good when you get it in a post-credits sequence. White Goodman (Stiller) appears in a fat suit, dancing to "Milkshake." Then he looks at the camera and blames the audience for the film's "happy ending" by shouting, "Fin' Chuck Norris!"
5. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)
Director:
Adam McKay
Writers:
Will Ferrell, Adam McKay
Cast:
Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, David Koechner
The San Diego Sign-off by Ron Burgundy (Ferrell) is the stuff of legends. After his teleprompter is sabotaged, Ron Burgundy tells the entire city, "Go f* yourself, San Diego." And audiences everywhere roared with laughter.
6. Catch Me If You Can (2002)
Director:
Steven Spielberg
Writer:
Jeff Nathanson
Cast:
Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Christopher Walken, Martin Sheen
Carl Hanratty (Hanks) is a stoic, straight-laced FBI agent. But he's on a case with a lot of tension. In order to liven the mood, he tells a knock-knock joke that ends with a perfectly dry, deadpan: "Go f* yourself."
7. The Social Network (2010)
Director:
David Fincher
Writer:
Aaron Sorkin
Cast:
Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Armie Hammer
When Eduardo Saverin (Garfield) realizes Mark Zuckerberg has squeezed him out of the company, he smashes Mark’s laptop and delivers the biting line:
"
Sorry, my Prada’s at the cleaners along with my hoodie and my f*ck-you flip-flops. You pretentious douchebag."
8. 500 Days of Summer (2009)
Director:
Marc Webb
Writers:
Scott Neustadter, Michael H. Weber
Cast:
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zooey Deschanel, Geoffrey Arend, Chloe Grace Moretz
Tom’s boss (Clark Gregg) reads a greeting card Tom (Gordon-Levitt) wrote while depressed after his breakup. The poem begins traditionally: "Roses are red, violets are blue..." but ends with a blunt and bitter: "F* you, whore" that lets us know where Tom is at right now in his headspace.
9. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)
Director:
Jeremiah S. Chechik
Writer:
John Hughes
Cast:
Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Juliette Lewis, Johnny Galecki, Randy Quaid
After receiving a "Membership to the Jelly of the Month Club" instead of his expected yearly bonus, Clark (Chase) snaps. When his family tries to leave, he throws down the gauntlet. Everyone must celebrate the holiday. "We're gonna have the hap-hap-happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny f***in' Kaye!"
10. Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011)
Director:
Glenn Ficarra, John Requa
Writer:
Dan Fogelman
Cast:
Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Kevin Bacon
This is one of the most charming romantic comedies ever made. It unpacks the messiness of love and relationships. And in this scene, Hannah Weaver (Stone) goes home with a guy she knows is a player (Gosling), and when he takes his shirt off, she delivers an honest reaction, "F**k! Seriously? It's like you're photoshopped!"
Summing It All UpÂ
These were my favorite instances of the use of "f***," but I bet you have other ones that stick out from your younger days. I want to hear which were your favorites and about any that I missed as well.
Let me know what you think in the comments.
