| Boilerpipe Text | The No. 2 seed San Antonio Spurs (62-20) meet the No. 7 seed Portland Trail Blazers (42-40) in a Western Conference first-round matchup, with both teams exceeding expectations this season.
San Antonio made a massive leap from 34 wins a year ago, while Portland improved under interim coach Tiago Splitter to 42 victories before earning its playoff berth with a 114-110 win over Phoenix Tuesday night in the Play-In Tournament.
San Antonio took the regular-season series 2–1, including a 112–101 win on Apr. 8 despite resting Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle.
Now healthy, Wembanyama enters his first playoff series as the centerpiece of a Spurs team that has been dominant, going 27-3 since Jan. 31. He averaged 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks this season, positioning himself as a potential MVP and Defensive Player of the Year candidate.
Portland brings a different identity, built around rebounding and second-chance scoring. The Trail Blazers ranked among the league’s best offensive rebounding teams and rely heavily on extra possessions, but they face a major challenge against San Antonio’s league-leading defensive rebounding unit.
The series also marks a coaching shift for the Spurs, with Mitch Johnson leading San Antonio into the postseason era following Gregg Popovich’s transition to the front office. The last time the Spurs were not led by Popovich in the playoffs was the 1995-96 season. Bob Hill coached the Spurs to a 59-23 record and a playoff appearance, losing in the Western Conference Semifinals.
On the Portland side, Deni Avdija has emerged as a breakout star, averaging 24.2 points per game and coming off a 41-point performance in the Play-In.
With rising stars, contrasting styles, and a historic debut for Wembanyama, this series sets up as a compelling clash of youth, size, and momentum.

The No. 2 seed San Antonio Spurs (62-20) meet the No. 7 seed Portland Trail Blazers (42-40) in a Western Conference first-round matchup, with both teams exceeding expectations this season.
San Antonio made a massive leap from 34 wins a year ago, while Portland improved under interim coach Tiago Splitter to 42 victories before earning its playoff berth with a 114-110 win over Phoenix Tuesday night in the Play-In Tournament.
San Antonio took the regular-season series 2–1, including a 112–101 win on Apr. 8 despite resting Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle.
Now healthy, Wembanyama enters his first playoff series as the centerpiece of a Spurs team that has been dominant, going 27-3 since Jan. 31. He averaged 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks this season, positioning himself as a potential MVP and Defensive Player of the Year candidate.
Portland brings a different identity, built around rebounding and second-chance scoring. The Trail Blazers ranked among the league’s best offensive rebounding teams and rely heavily on extra possessions, but they face a major challenge against San Antonio’s league-leading defensive rebounding unit.
The series also marks a coaching shift for the Spurs, with Mitch Johnson leading San Antonio into the postseason era following Gregg Popovich’s transition to the front office. The last time the Spurs were not led by Popovich in the playoffs was the 1995-96 season. Bob Hill coached the Spurs to a 59-23 record and a playoff appearance, losing in the Western Conference Semifinals.
On the Portland side, Deni Avdija has emerged as a breakout star, averaging 24.2 points per game and coming off a 41-point performance in the Play-In.
With rising stars, contrasting styles, and a historic debut for Wembanyama, this series sets up as a compelling clash of youth, size, and momentum.

SAN ANTONIO - The Spurs are back in the playoffs for the first time in seven years, and you might remember once upon a time when they won a playoffs game, we could all go to Valero the next morning and get free coffee.
Well, that is no longer on the table.
We need someone to stand up. Who do you think should step up to offer that free coffee again?
For years, the "210" celebrated playoff runs with free coffee and cappuccinos - a beloved local staple that was quietly phased out after the 2018 season. The timing was particularly bittersweet, as the Spurs would make their final postseason appearance just one year later in 2018–19.
We now know the silver and black will be playing the Portland Trail Blazers in round one. That's after Portland bested Phoenix Tuesday night 114-110.
So how have the Spurs matched up thus far? Well, the Spurs played the Blazers three times during the regular season. They won two of those matchups.
And from a health standpoint, the Spurs appear to be close to 100%.

SAN ANTONIO - Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones said during a recent Town Hall that she has directed the city manager to begin pursuing all businesses and entities that owe San Antonio more than \$1 million, and at the top of that list, she says, is Spurs Sports & Entertainment, [according to the San Antonio Express-News.](https://www.expressnews.com/news/article/gina-ortiz-jones-san-antonio-spurs-toyota-field-22162210.php)
The issue centers on nearly \$5 million tied to a Toyota Field agreement that local governments say SS\&E still owes the city and Bexar County, even as officials weigh hundreds of millions in public funding for a proposed \$1.3 billion Spurs arena.
The Express-News reports the payment stems from a 2015 deal in which the city, county, and SS\&E jointly purchased Toyota Field in hopes of landing a Major League Soccer franchise. Under the agreement, SS\&E was required to repay \$5 million if an MLS team was not secured by 2021.
That condition was not met, and San Antonio did not land an MLS expansion team.
According to information City Manager Erik Walsh provided to the City Council, as reported by the San Antonio Express-News, SS\&E has repaid \$250,000 toward its obligation but has missed about \$1.75 million in scheduled payments. Walsh said that, after factoring in interest, the outstanding balance now totals more than \$2 million.
Mayor Jones has argued that recovering overdue payments is especially important as the city faces potential budget pressure and possible cuts to public services.

San Antonio made a massive leap from 34 wins a year ago, while Portland improved under interim coach Tiago Splitter to 42 victories before earning its playoff berth with a 114-110 win over Phoenix Tuesday night in the Play-In Tournament.
San Antonio took the regular-season series 2–1, including a 112–101 win on Apr. 8 despite resting Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle.
Now healthy, Wembanyama enters his first playoff series as the centerpiece of a Spurs team that has been dominant, going 27-3 since Jan. 31. He averaged 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks this season, positioning himself as a potential MVP and Defensive Player of the Year candidate.
Portland brings a different identity, built around rebounding and second-chance scoring. The Trail Blazers ranked among the league’s best offensive rebounding teams and rely heavily on extra possessions, but they face a major challenge against San Antonio’s league-leading defensive rebounding unit.
The series also marks a coaching shift for the Spurs, with Mitch Johnson leading San Antonio into the postseason era following Gregg Popovich’s transition to the front office. The last time the Spurs were not led by Popovich in the playoffs was the 1995-96 season. Bob Hill coached the Spurs to a 59-23 record and a playoff appearance, losing in the Western Conference Semifinals.
On the Portland side, Deni Avdija has emerged as a breakout star, averaging 24.2 points per game and coming off a 41-point performance in the Play-In.
With rising stars, contrasting styles, and a historic debut for Wembanyama, this series sets up as a compelling clash of youth, size, and momentum.
