Tesla suspended accepting [bitcoin](https:\/\/www.binance.com\/en\/price\/bitcoin) in May, citing environmental concerns.**\n\n![](https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/images\/uploads\/ListenArticleHeadphone.svg)Listen to article\n\n[Prefer us on Google](https:\/\/www.google.com\/preferences\/source?q=https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/)\n\nWRITTEN BY\n\n![Kevin Helms](https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/kevin.png)[Kevin Helms](https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/author\/kevin-helms\/)\n\nSHARE\n\nPublished: Oct 26, 2021, 10:00 PM\n\n![Tesla Informs SEC It May Restart Transacting in Cryptocurrencies](https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/_next\/image\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fstatic.news.bitcoin.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2021%2F10%2Ftesla.jpg&w=1920&q=75)\n\n## Tesla May Resume Accepting Bitcoin, SEC Filing Shows\nTesla Inc. filed a quarterly [report](https:\/\/ir.tesla.com\/_flysystem\/s3\/sec\/000095017021002253\/tsla-20210930-gen.pdf) with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Monday.\n\nThe company explained that during the nine months ended Sept. 20, it “purchased an aggregate of \\$1.50 billion in bitcoin.” In its Q3 earnings report, Tesla’s balance sheet [shows](https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/tesla-hodls-bitcoin-in-q3-elon-musk-tweets-btc-at-69k-meme\/) bitcoin worth \\$1.26 billion, after reporting bitcoin-related impairments in the past two quarters.\n\nThe SEC filing further states that during the three months ended March 31, Tesla “[accepted bitcoin](https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/tesla-accepting-bitcoin-elon-musk-btc-payments\/) as a payment for sales of certain of our products in specified regions, subject to applicable laws.” However, the company noted that it “suspended this practice in May 2021.” Tesla continued:\n\n> We may in the future restart the practice of transacting in cryptocurrencies (‘digital assets’) for our products and services.\n\nThe electric car company, whose market cap hit [\\$1 trillion](https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/10\/25\/tesla-shares-up-on-news-hertz-will-purchase-100000-electric-vehicles.html) for the first time this week, [explained](https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/elon-musk-tesla-suspended-accepting-bitcoin-environmental-issues\/) that it “suspended vehicle purchases using bitcoin” due to concerns “about rapidly increasing use of fossil fuels for bitcoin mining and transactions, especially coal, which has the worst emissions of any fuel.”\n\nTesla CEO Elon Musk then tried to convince bitcoin miners to use renewable energy. In May, he spoke with North American bitcoin miners, after which they formed a [Bitcoin Mining Council](https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/elon-musk-miners-bitcoin-mining-council-promote-renewable-energy-usage\/) to “promote energy usage transparency & accelerate sustainability initiatives worldwide.”\n\nIn June, Musk [tweeted](https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/elon-musk-tesla-resume-accepting-bitcoin-miners-confirm-clean-energy-usage\/): “When there’s confirmation of reasonable (~50%) clean energy usage by miners with positive future trend, Tesla will resume allowing bitcoin transactions.”\n\nAt the “B Word” event in July, he [said](https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/elon-musk-spacex-owns-bitcoin-personally-owns-btc-ethereum-dogecoin-pump-dont-dump\/): “It looks like Bitcoin is shifting a lot more toward renewables and a bunch of the heavy-duty coal plants that were being used … have been shut down, especially in China.” He added: “I want to do a little more due diligence to confirm that the percentage of renewable energy usage is most likely at or above 50% and that there is a trend toward increasing that number. If so, Tesla will most likely resume accepting bitcoin.”\n\nWhile Tesla only accepted bitcoin, Musk conducted a [poll](https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/elon-musk-hints-at-tesla-accepting-dogecoin-for-payments\/) on Twitter in May asking his followers if Tesla should accept dogecoin (DOGE). 78.2% of more than 3.9 million votes were in favor of Tesla accepting the meme [cryptocurrency](http:\/\/www.bitcoin.com\/get-started\/a-quick-introduction-to-crypto\/). Musk recently confirmed that he [personally](https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/elon-musk-spacex-owns-bitcoin-personally-owns-btc-ethereum-dogecoin-pump-dont-dump\/) owns [bitcoin](https:\/\/www.binance.com\/en\/price\/bitcoin), ether, and dogecoin. The company explained that during the nine months ended Sept. 20, it “purchased an aggregate of \$1.50 billion in bitcoin.” In its Q3 earnings report, Tesla’s balance sheet [shows](https://news.bitcoin.com/tesla-hodls-bitcoin-in-q3-elon-musk-tweets-btc-at-69k-meme/) bitcoin worth \$1.26 billion, after reporting bitcoin-related impairments in the past two quarters. The SEC filing further states that during the three months ended March 31, Tesla “[accepted bitcoin](https://news.bitcoin.com/tesla-accepting-bitcoin-elon-musk-btc-payments/) as a payment for sales of certain of our products in specified regions, subject to applicable laws.” However, the company noted that it “suspended this practice in May 2021.” Tesla continued: > We may in the future restart the practice of transacting in cryptocurrencies (‘digital assets’) for our products and services. The electric car company, whose market cap hit [\$1 trillion](https://www.cnbc.com/2021/10/25/tesla-shares-up-on-news-hertz-will-purchase-100000-electric-vehicles.html) for the first time this week, [explained](https://news.bitcoin.com/elon-musk-tesla-suspended-accepting-bitcoin-environmental-issues/) that it “suspended vehicle purchases using bitcoin” due to concerns “about rapidly increasing use of fossil fuels for bitcoin mining and transactions, especially coal, which has the worst emissions of any fuel.” Tesla CEO Elon Musk then tried to convince bitcoin miners to use renewable energy. In May, he spoke with North American bitcoin miners, after which they formed a [Bitcoin Mining Council](https://news.bitcoin.com/elon-musk-miners-bitcoin-mining-council-promote-renewable-energy-usage/) to “promote energy usage transparency & accelerate sustainability initiatives worldwide.” In June, Musk [tweeted](https://news.bitcoin.com/elon-musk-tesla-resume-accepting-bitcoin-miners-confirm-clean-energy-usage/): “When there’s confirmation of reasonable (~50%) clean energy usage by miners with positive future trend, Tesla will resume allowing bitcoin transactions.” At the “B Word” event in July, he [said](https://news.bitcoin.com/elon-musk-spacex-owns-bitcoin-personally-owns-btc-ethereum-dogecoin-pump-dont-dump/): “It looks like Bitcoin is shifting a lot more toward renewables and a bunch of the heavy-duty coal plants that were being used … have been shut down, especially in China.” He added: “I want to do a little more due diligence to confirm that the percentage of renewable energy usage is most likely at or above 50% and that there is a trend toward increasing that number. The submission is a draft registration statement, meaning full financial disclosures and a formal prospectus remain private while the SEC reviews the materials. Under standard rules, a public S-1 filing typically follows two to three months later. If that timeline holds, [SpaceX](https://news.bitcoin.com/elon-musks-spacex-ignites-chatter-with-another-bitcoin-transfer-to-new-wallets/) could debut on public markets as early as June 2026. The company is targeting a valuation above \$1.75 trillion. That figure has climbed sharply from the roughly \$800 billion valuation attached to a recent secondary share sale. SpaceX is also eyeing a capital raise between \$50 billion and \$75 billion, which would exceed Saudi Aramco’s \$29.4 billion offering in 2019, the current global record. SpaceX is already profitable. The company generated approximately \$15 billion to \$16 billion in revenue in its most recent reported year, alongside roughly \$8 billion in profit. Starlink, its satellite internet service, accounts for a substantial share of that revenue, with launch operations contributing the rest.
