Brain fog
What is brain fog?
Brain fog is the term used to describe the effects on the brain and nervous system that can occur with long COVID
.
Brain fog can last for weeks, months or longer after a person recovers from COVID-19 illness. It can linger when other symptoms have stopped.
What are symptoms of long COVID brain fog?
These are the most common symptoms:
Difficulty paying attention and concentrating. This includes problems with tracking details when talking with others or following story lines on movies or TV shows.
Memory problems. "Working" memory can be most affected. This type of memory enables us to do tasks quickly or easily solve a problem without looking up information. This includes quickly learning a new computer program or using names or numbers for a routine task.
Difficulty planning or organizing. These problems affect daily life, such as planning what to get done in a day. The ability to make step-by-step plans is needed to shop for and prepare meals, for example.
Mental fatigue. This similar how you'd feel after taking a long test that required remembering detailed information or doing a complicated mental task when you were short on sleep.
Daily headaches. These headaches can come and go randomly and have no apparent cause.
Even people who don't usually get headaches can be affected.
What causes brain fog?
Researchers think brain fog results from inflammation that causes tiny (microscopic) impacts on brain cells. Evidence also shows that COVID-19 virus can directly infect and reduce the function of some brain cells. As virus is cleared from your body and brain, your immune system returns to normal. Your brain recovers.
What can I do to recover from brain fog?
You can help yourself recover, because brain fog improves with healthier lifestyle choices. The "basics" are eating healthier, getting enough sleep and rest, and increasing physical activity (gradually). Reducing stress is also important. This includes avoiding news or social media that makes you anxious or stressed.
For most people, it works best to start by making one lifestyle change that's important to you and do-able. As you make progress, gradually add other changes. | |||||||||
