Scorsese grew up enjoying psychological horror films produced by Val Lewton (Cat People, I Walked with a Zombie), and even produced a documentary about the director's career. The two watched Shock Corridor (1963), about a police officer who admits himself into a psych ward in an attempt to solve a murder. The director also screened noir classics Laura (1944) and Out of the Past (1947) for DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, and Ben Kingsley. Scorsese has also been the subject of a documentary on his own storied career, Mr. Scorsese, Apple's five-part docuseries in which he waxes ecstatic about his love for Hitchcock, Powell & Pressburger, John Ford as well as many others throughout history. The cast includes Jared Harris, Mads Mikkelsen, and Patricia Clarkson (who also starred in Shutter Island with DiCaprio). Scorsese grew up enjoying psychological horror films produced by Val Lewton (Cat People, I Walked with a Zombie), and even produced a documentary about the director's career. Working with Scorses always doubles as a film history seminar. The filmmaker has made numerous documentaries on American and Italian film history, while regularly giving guest lectures on the importance of cinema. The director also screened noir classics Laura (1944) and Out of the Past (1947) for DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, and Ben Kingsley. Scorsese reminds us, always so eloquently, about why movies matter. There's a reason why he, along with Steven Spielberg and Paul Thomas Anderson, have helped keep Turner Classic Movies alive. They want films of the past easily accessible to inform the future of filmmaking. There's no doubt that his love of cinema history will be present in What Happens at Night.
