Modern smartphones, especially flagships, are getting more and more modest every year in global markets. Chinese and Indian versions usually come with power supplies. Global versions do not. This also applies to the Xiaomi 17. The smartphone is packed in a medium-sized white box with a minimum of printing.
The box contains the smartphone itself, a Type-C cable, a tray eject tool, a protective film (on the screen), documentation, and a transparent silicone protective bumper. The Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 14 came with more pleasant black bumpers with a matte finish.
Design and ergonomics
Xiaomi 17 is one of the few modern compact flagship smartphones. It has a flat screen with a diagonal of 6.3 inches. It is claimed that the frames around the perimeter are only 1.18 mm. The screen is protected by Xiaomi Shield Glass. Functional elements in standard places: the front camera in a small round hole, above - a barely noticeable cutout for the speaker. The smartphone is similar to the Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 14 and has similar dimensions, but the corners of the new product are more rounded.
The side frame is made of aluminum with a nice matte finish and the usual plastic inserts around the perimeter for stable operation of wireless interfaces. The frame is flat and has very small roundings on the edges.
There are no functional elements on the left side. On the opposite side are the standard power and volume buttons. Due to the small size of the Xiaomi 17 case, the buttons are convenient for either hand, you don't have to reach.
On the bottom side there is a standard set: microphone, main speaker, Type-C 3.2, with Display Port support, as well as a tray. It is designed for 2 physical SIM cards, there is also eSIM support. There is no space for MicroSD.
The back panel is also flat and made of glass with a matte finish. It is almost fingerprint-resistant, even on the dark versions of the Xiaomi 17. We had the standard "black" (which is more like dark gray or graphite), there is also blue, pink and dark green.
The rear camera is large, has a square shape, rounded corners and separate round modules protruding above the general plane of the camera. This is a triple rear camera, a flash, one of the microphones, as well as an IR transmitter for controlling electronics. The design option of the camera with a general flat glass, like the Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 14, looked somewhat neater and collected less dust.
Xiaomi 17 has a completely modern, pleasant design without experiments. But
it turned out to be very convenient due to the compact dimensions of 151.1x71.8x8.1 mm. The weight is 191 g. The case is protected by the IP68 standard: immersion in fresh water to a depth of 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. Which has already become the standard for modern smartphones of the top and middle segments.
Display
Xiaomi 17 received the so-called CrystalRes-OLED display with a diagonal of 6.3 inches, which practically coincides with its predecessors, which had 6.36 inches. An LTPO AMOLED matrix with a resolution of 2656x1220 is used. The pixel density is 460 ppi, the aspect ratio is 19.5:9. The PWM frequency is 2160 Hz, there is support for DC dimming. The sensor reading frequency is 300 Hz. Thanks to the use of the LTPO matrix, the refresh rate can vary from 1 to 120 Hz. The display color depth is 12 bit, the color coverage is 100% of the DCI-P3 space. The declared peak brightness is 3500 cd/m², there is support for HDR10+ and Dolby Vision.
In addition to the usual choice between light and dark themes, brightness settings, color scheme selection, night and reading modes, there are several more functions in the settings. Texture enhancements, as well as adaptive refresh rate Pro. I did not notice a noticeable difference with this function active. There is support for Always on Display. The screen is really bright and has very pleasant saturated colors. At certain angles, the white color acquires a greenish tint, which is typical for the vast majority of OLED matrix options.
In "Bright" mode, the maximum brightness was 683.88 cd/m². The color gamut is much wider than sRGB, and the color reproduction is quite accurate.
Security
Like last year's flagship, the Xiaomi 17 is equipped with an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner under the screen. Not all flagships still get such scanners, because they are significantly more expensive than the more familiar optical ones. But ultrasonic ones work faster, more accurately and are not afraid of wet fingers. In this case, the scanner works perfectly: very fast and without errors. And its position is quite convenient.
Additionally, there is traditional facial recognition of the owner using the front camera. This method of unlocking is much less reliable, since no additional sensors are used. But it is also fast in good lighting.
Productivity and software
Traditionally for the line, Xiaomi 17 is equipped with the current flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. This is an 8-core 3-nm processor, including 2 powerful Oryon V3 Phoenix L cores with a frequency of up to 4.6 GHz and 6 Oryon V3 Phoenix M cores at 3.62 GHz. Adreno 840 graphics accelerator. It is claimed that processor performance has increased by 20% with an increase in efficiency by 30% compared to last year's Snapdragon 8 Elite. The graphics accelerator is 23% more productive and 20% more energy efficient. RAM 12/16 GB LPDDR5X (expandable via storage), permanent memory can be 256/512 GB, or 1 TB. Fast UFS 4.1 memory is used.
In synthetic tests, the Xiaomi 17 shows high results. Although some are not as high as competitors with a similar processor.
This is due to the not very effective Xiaomi IceLoop cooling system. It is really difficult to install good cooling in such a compact case, especially considering the high battery capacity and the generally dense layout of the insides. In the CPU Throttling Test stress test, the processor noticeably overheats and performance drops to about 60%. At the same time, the case heats up very noticeably.
Games on the smartphone work great. But, again, during long gaming sessions, the case heats up significantly. Although there was no noticeable decrease in performance. Call of Duty Mobile at maximum settings shows above 60 FPS. Diablo Immortal at high settings — stable 60 FPS.
Xiaomi 17 received a full set of modern wireless interfaces, not bad, although not the most modern: dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/6e/7 with support for 2x2 MIMO and 8x8 remote transmission for MU-MIMO, Bluetooth 6.0 with support for aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, LHDC 5, LDAC, LC3, MIHC codecs, as well as an NFC module and the ability to use eSIM. Global positioning systems GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, QZSS, NavIC are supported. Additionally, there is an IR transmitter for controlling electronics with the appropriate application:
Xiaomi 17 runs on Android 16 out of the box with the proprietary HyperOS 3 interface. The manufacturer promises 5 OS updates and 6 years of security patches, which is very good. Xiaomi claims that the interface has become even more convenient, faster and smoother. But in general, there are practically no cardinal differences from previous versions. The shell has a redesigned design compared to stock Android and many options for customizing the appearance. Unfortunately, the curtains with notifications and switches remained separate, without the ability to switch to the usual "everything at once" option.
Of the really noticeable innovations, one can only mention HyperIsland, which resembles Dynamic Island in iOS. It displays contextual information and quick access to active current tasks or notifications. For example, quick access to the music player.
The shell is really fast and convenient, with a lot of additional features. The only unpleasant moment is advertising in some branded applications. Although there is much less of it than in cheaper models of the manufacturer. And its quality is higher: for example, the music player can offer some composition. There is no garbage like dubious games or gambling.
Sounding
Xiaomi 17 reproduces stereo sound according to the classic scheme: the main and speaker. The speaker plays a little quieter than the main one. But the overall volume and quality are at a good level. There are even a few low frequencies.
In additional settings, two sound modes are available: the proprietary Xiaomi Sound and Dolby Atmos, there is also a graphic equalizer with various ready-made modes and the so-called Immersive Sound.
Cameras
Xiaomi 17 did not receive any radical changes in the cameras compared to Xiaomi 15. This is a completely modern universal set. Camera specifications:
50-megapixel main Light Fusion 950 module with a size of 1/1.31 inches, 1.2 microns with an aperture of f/1.67, VARIO-SUMMILUX 1:1.67-2.4/17-60 ASPH optics, phase detection autofocus and optical stabilization. Video resolution up to 8K 30 FPS, Dolby Vision support;
50-megapixel Samsung JN5 telephoto module 1/2.75 inches, 0.64 microns, 60 mm with f/2.0 aperture, moving lenses, phase detection autofocus, 2.6x zoom, OIS;
50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle OV50M, 1.22μm, 17mm with f/2.4 aperture and 102° viewing angle, without autofocus. This module not only does not have autofocus, but also has a smaller angle compared to last year's model;
Front camera: 50 MP OV50M, f/2.2, 21 mm EFF.
The camera interface has been slightly redesigned. The main settings are on the viewfinder screen, but instead of a mode carousel, they are opened by swiping up from the Photo caption:
The main camera shoots great in most situations. High detail, fairly natural colors, and wide dynamic range during the day. Night photos almost do not lose detail, but there are some yellowish, not very natural shades.

The telephoto camera with 2.6x zoom also allows you to take high-quality photos even in the evening:
5x is listed in the promotional materials as "optical zoom", although, of course, it is also a crop. In the daytime, the photos are good. At night, the image can be a little blurry in some places.
The ultra-wide-angle camera is the weakest in the set. And this applies not only to the lack of autofocus, but also to rather dark optics and generally lower image quality. This is especially noticeable in night mode. Blurring is often present not only around the perimeter of the frames:

But at night, the detail deteriorates somewhat:
Silicon-carbon batteries (Si/C) are becoming more and more common, and this cannot but please, because such batteries have a larger capacity for the same size. Such a battery was already used in last year's Xiaomi 15. But this year, the current flagship Xiaomi 17 received an even larger capacity: 6330 mAh instead of 5240 mAh with almost similar dimensions. This is an excellent indicator, especially considering the small screen. The smartphone really turned out to be very durable. If you use it in everyday mode (calls, browser, YouTube, messengers, mail, some music and camera) and exclude games, you can get 2 days of work.
In the PCMark battery test with the display brightness at 50%, the Xiaomi 17 lasted a little over 21 hours, which is an excellent indicator. The Xiaomi 17 supports fast wired charging with a capacity of 100 W and wireless charging with a capacity of 50 W. Unfortunately, there is no power supply included in the kit, so it was not possible to fully measure the charging speed. However, there was a power supply from the Xiaomi 14 with a capacity of 90 W. It fully charges the smartphone in a little less than an hour.

Xiaomi 17 is a versatile and fairly compact flagship, “for every day”, which not only meets all the basic requirements for this class of smartphones, but also has several nice bonuses. The smartphone has a great screen, a top-notch processor, a nice design, protection against dirt and water, high-quality stereo sound, as well as good main and telephoto cameras. To this, it is worth adding an exceptional battery life and fast charging. But it also had its weaknesses. The smartphone heats up significantly and loses performance during prolonged loads. The ultra-wide-angle camera could be more interesting, considering the price. And the shell, as before, displays advertising in some places.

This is due to the not very effective Xiaomi IceLoop cooling system. It is really difficult to install good cooling in such a compact case, especially considering the high battery capacity and the generally dense layout of the insides. In the CPU Throttling Test stress test, the processor noticeably overheats and performance drops to about 60%. At the same time, the case heats up very noticeably.

Games on the smartphone work great. But, again, during long gaming sessions, the case heats up significantly. Although there was no noticeable decrease in performance. Call of Duty Mobile at maximum settings shows above 60 FPS. Diablo Immortal at high settings — stable 60 FPS.

Xiaomi 17 received a full set of modern wireless interfaces, not bad, although not the most modern: dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/6e/7 with support for 2x2 MIMO and 8x8 remote transmission for MU-MIMO, Bluetooth 6.0 with support for aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, LHDC 5, LDAC, LC3, MIHC codecs, as well as an NFC module and the ability to use eSIM. Xiaomi 17 runs on Android 16 out of the box with the proprietary HyperOS 3 interface. The manufacturer promises 5 OS updates and 6 years of security patches, which is very good. Xiaomi claims that the interface has become even more convenient, faster and smoother. But in general, there are practically no cardinal differences from previous versions. The shell has a redesigned design compared to stock Android and many options for customizing the appearance. Unfortunately, the curtains with notifications and switches remained separate, without the ability to switch to the usual "everything at once" option.

Of the really noticeable innovations, one can only mention HyperIsland, which resembles Dynamic Island in iOS. It displays contextual information and quick access to active current tasks or notifications. For example, quick access to the music player.

The shell is really fast and convenient, with a lot of additional features. The only unpleasant moment is advertising in some branded applications. Although there is much less of it than in cheaper models of the manufacturer. And its quality is higher: for example, the music player can offer some composition. There is no garbage like dubious games or gambling.
## Sounding
Xiaomi 17 reproduces stereo sound according to the classic scheme: the main and speaker. The speaker plays a little quieter than the main one. But the overall volume and quality are at a good level. There are even a few low frequencies.

In additional settings, two sound modes are available: the proprietary Xiaomi Sound and Dolby Atmos, there is also a graphic equalizer with various ready-made modes and the so-called Immersive Sound.

Xiaomi 17 did not receive any radical changes in the cameras compared to Xiaomi 15. This is a completely modern universal set. Camera specifications:
- 50-megapixel main Light Fusion 950 module with a size of 1/1.31 inches, 1.2 microns with an aperture of f/1.67, VARIO-SUMMILUX 1:1.67-2.4/17-60 ASPH optics, phase detection autofocus and optical stabilization. Video resolution up to 8K 30 FPS, Dolby Vision support;
- 50-megapixel Samsung JN5 telephoto module 1/2.75 inches, 0.64 microns, 60 mm with f/2.0 aperture, moving lenses, phase detection autofocus, 2.6x zoom, OIS;
- 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle OV50M, 1.22μm, 17mm with f/2.4 aperture and 102° viewing angle, without autofocus. This module not only does not have autofocus, but also has a smaller angle compared to last year's model;

The main camera shoots great in most situations. High detail, fairly natural colors, and wide dynamic range during the day. Night photos almost do not lose detail, but there are some yellowish, not very natural shades.

The ultra-wide-angle camera is the weakest in the set. And this applies not only to the lack of autofocus, but also to rather dark optics and generally lower image quality. This is especially noticeable in night mode. Blurring is often present not only around the perimeter of the frames:

## Battery life
Silicon-carbon batteries (Si/C) are becoming more and more common, and this cannot but please, because such batteries have a larger capacity for the same size. Such a battery was already used in last year's Xiaomi 15. But this year, the current flagship Xiaomi 17 received an even larger capacity: 6330 mAh instead of 5240 mAh with almost similar dimensions. This is an excellent indicator, especially considering the small screen. The smartphone really turned out to be very durable. If you use it in everyday mode (calls, browser, YouTube, messengers, mail, some music and camera) and exclude games, you can get 2 days of work.

In the PCMark battery test with the display brightness at 50%, the Xiaomi 17 lasted a little over 21 hours, which is an excellent indicator. The Xiaomi 17 supports fast wired charging with a capacity of 100 W and wireless charging with a capacity of 50 W. Unfortunately, there is no power supply included in the kit, so it was not possible to fully measure the charging speed. However, there was a power supply from the Xiaomi 14 with a capacity of 90 W. It fully charges the smartphone in a little less than an hour.

Xiaomi 17 is a versatile and fairly compact flagship, “for every day”, which not only meets all the basic requirements for this class of smartphones, but also has several nice bonuses. The smartphone has a great screen, a top-notch processor, a nice design, protection against dirt and water, high-quality stereo sound, as well as good main and telephoto cameras. To this, it is worth adding an exceptional battery life and fast charging. But it also had its weaknesses. The smartphone heats up significantly and loses performance during prolonged loads. The ultra-wide-angle camera could be more interesting, considering the price. And the shell, as before, displays advertising in some places.

This also applies to the Xiaomi 17. The smartphone is packed in a medium-sized white box with a minimum of printing.

The box contains the smartphone itself, a Type-C cable, a tray eject tool, a protective film (on the screen), documentation, and a transparent silicone protective bumper. The Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 14 came with more pleasant black bumpers with a matte finish.
## Design and ergonomics
Xiaomi 17 is one of the few modern compact flagship smartphones. It has a flat screen with a diagonal of 6.3 inches. It is claimed that the frames around the perimeter are only 1.18 mm. The screen is protected by Xiaomi Shield Glass. Functional elements in standard places: the front camera in a small round hole, above - a barely noticeable cutout for the speaker. The smartphone is similar to the Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 14 and has similar dimensions, but the corners of the new product are more rounded.

The side frame is made of aluminum with a nice matte finish and the usual plastic inserts around the perimeter for stable operation of wireless interfaces. The frame is flat and has very small roundings on the edges.

There are no functional elements on the left side. On the opposite side are the standard power and volume buttons. Due to the small size of the Xiaomi 17 case, the buttons are convenient for either hand, you don't have to reach.

On the bottom side there is a standard set: microphone, main speaker, Type-C 3.2, with Display Port support, as well as a tray. It is designed for 2 physical SIM cards, there is also eSIM support. There is no space for MicroSD.
The back panel is also flat and made of glass with a matte finish. It is almost fingerprint-resistant, even on the dark versions of the Xiaomi 17. We had the standard "black" (which is more like dark gray or graphite), there is also blue, pink and dark green.

The rear camera is large, has a square shape, rounded corners and separate round modules protruding above the general plane of the camera. This is a triple rear camera, a flash, one of the microphones, as well as an IR transmitter for controlling electronics. The design option of the camera with a general flat glass, like the Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 14, looked somewhat neater and collected less dust.

Xiaomi 17 has a completely modern, pleasant design without experiments. But it turned out to be very convenient due to the compact dimensions of 151.1x71.8x8.1 mm. The weight is 191 g. The case is protected by the IP68 standard: immersion in fresh water to a depth of 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. Which has already become the standard for modern smartphones of the top and middle segments.
## Display
Xiaomi 17 received the so-called CrystalRes-OLED display with a diagonal of 6.3 inches, which practically coincides with its predecessors, which had 6.36 inches. An LTPO AMOLED matrix with a resolution of 2656x1220 is used. The pixel density is 460 ppi, the aspect ratio is 19.5:9. The PWM frequency is 2160 Hz, there is support for DC dimming. The sensor reading frequency is 300 Hz. Thanks to the use of the LTPO matrix, the refresh rate can vary from 1 to 120 Hz. The display color depth is 12 bit, the color coverage is 100% of the DCI-P3 space. The declared peak brightness is 3500 cd/m², there is support for HDR10+ and Dolby Vision.

In addition to the usual choice between light and dark themes, brightness settings, color scheme selection, night and reading modes, there are several more functions in the settings. Texture enhancements, as well as adaptive refresh rate Pro. I did not notice a noticeable difference with this function active. There is support for Always on Display. The screen is really bright and has very pleasant saturated colors. At certain angles, the white color acquires a greenish tint, which is typical for the vast majority of OLED matrix options.
In "Bright" mode, the maximum brightness was 683.88 cd/m². The color gamut is much wider than sRGB, and the color reproduction is quite accurate.
## Security
Like last year's flagship, the Xiaomi 17 is equipped with an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner under the screen. Not all flagships still get such scanners, because they are significantly more expensive than the more familiar optical ones. But ultrasonic ones work faster, more accurately and are not afraid of wet fingers. In this case, the scanner works perfectly: very fast and without errors. And its position is quite convenient.

Additionally, there is traditional facial recognition of the owner using the front camera. This method of unlocking is much less reliable, since no additional sensors are used. But it is also fast in good lighting.
## Productivity and software
Traditionally for the line, Xiaomi 17 is equipped with the current flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. This is an 8-core 3-nm processor, including 2 powerful Oryon V3 Phoenix L cores with a frequency of up to 4.6 GHz and 6 Oryon V3 Phoenix M cores at 3.62 GHz. Adreno 840 graphics accelerator. It is claimed that processor performance has increased by 20% with an increase in efficiency by 30% compared to last year's Snapdragon 8 Elite. The graphics accelerator is 23% more productive and 20% more energy efficient. RAM 12/16 GB LPDDR5X (expandable via storage), permanent memory can be 256/512 GB, or 1 TB. Fast UFS 4.1 memory is used.
