Today, I opened the app. And before every one of the three videos I watched, there were two ads. I considered getting YouTube Premium, to avoid having to hear the Grammarly actor say how she was *this* underwater for the hundredth time. I did my homework. Here it is for anyone wondering whether YouTube Premium is worth it or not. Let's get to it. This is a flat rate, and it doesn’t depend on how much you watch. However, YouTube’s ad revenue does vary. According to the marketing platform LocaliQ, YouTube charges advertisers between \$4 and \$10 for every 1000 ads shown. Let’s calculate the number of ads per month you would’ve needed to watch for YouTube to earn \$13.99 from advertising.  So you need to watch anywhere between 1399 to 3497.5 ads per month to make YouTube Premium’s ad-free feature worth it. Next, I’ll calculate just how much YouTube you need to watch to see this many ads. There was no exact statistic about the number of ads per hour watched. For me personally, it’s 1 ad every 5 minutes. I can now make the informed decision of … not to pay for Youtube Premium! 🎊 *Some caveats:* *There are other advantages to having YouTube Premium not just it being ad-free. My calculations did not take into account other perks such as background play, afterparties, and downloading. Here, I will just outline how many hours of YouTube you need to watch per day to earn back the subscription fee.* *My calculations cannot tell you exactly whether you personally should get YouTube Premium. Perhaps you watch fewer than 9 hours per day but you would happily pay \$13.99 to get rid of the pesky ads. I can only say that YouTube is gaining from this transaction, but it doesn’t mean that you are losing out. Your own satisfaction/ annoyance/ needs are what should determine whether this subscription is right for you or not.* *Plus, my calculations did not factor in the time you lose when watching ads. Time is valuable and just like sometimes it is worthwhile to spend money on taxis to save time, maybe it is also worthwhile to pay for YouTube Premium to save time on ads.
