More people than ever want to work on their own terms. That includes retiring early. I bought into the FIRE movement ( F inancial  I ndependence  R etire  E arly) when I first become aware of it in the 90s. When I got my first computer, I set up spreadsheets, planning how to get there. When I retired (early), however, I realized that retiring early is not the final goal but only a step toward what we really want: to work (or not) whenever we want to however we want to. The acronym really should be FINE ( F inancial  I ndependence  N ext  E ndeavor). Sitting on a beach doing nothing is nice — for a while, but deep down inside, most people want to be active and feel useful.
