Photo by astronaut Buzz Aldrin, NASA. Public domain via Wikimedia Commons On the morning of July 16, 1969, NASA launched Apollo 11 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. With astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins aboard, Apollo 11’s mission was to land on the moon. Three days later, the spacecraft was in lunar orbit. On July 20, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon in the lunar module, Eagle. Armstrong’s historic walk on the lunar landscape was viewed on live television by more than half a billion people; he took that step and uttered the words, “That’s one step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.” Aldrin then joined Armstrong and both astronauts spent the next 2–1/2 hours exploring the moon’s surface. The next day Armstrong and Aldrin blasted off and docked with Columbia, the main spacecraft, rejoining Collins. The crew of three splashed down off Hawaii on July 24, successfully completing their mission. The Apollo 11 moon landing effectively fulfilled the vision of President John F. Kennedy, who in 1961 declared , “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth.”
