Death is an inevitable phenomenon in every living thing. After the birth, the living things must undergo the stages: growth, aging and death. Two arguments exist about death; first, death is an end of life, so there is no life continues after death, and second, soul never dies, so death opens the door for another life, which means rebirth.
Almost every religion believes in life after death. Religious people believe in ‘heaven’ and ‘hell’. If you live a life free of ‘sins’, doors of ‘heaven’ open for you, but if you are sinner you must make your way to ‘hell’. These people also believe in reincarnation or rebirth as human beings. However, many others are against the concept of ‘heaven’ and ‘hell’, and do not believe in ‘life’ after death. Death for them is the end of everything; for a living thing there is nothing beyond.
It is also quite true that no one has returned from grave to explain the experience of their own death. Similarly no one has been able to tell that it is their re-birth of life, except few rumours. Scientists have ruled out the possibilities of rebirth. There’s no evidence of someone enjoying another life after their demise. Seeing the systematic natural cycles humans started believing in the existence of ‘superpower’ which controls the universe. This idea might have led to the faith on ‘rebirth’, ‘god’, ‘heaven’, ‘hell’, et cetera.
However, the way humans exist on earth make many feel every living being must have carried some kind of energy with them. The ‘soul’ or spirit might be the other name of energy. As scientists say energy can never be destroyed but it is transformed into another form. Then, we can not rule out the possibility of having ‘soul’ which takes another form of life after death.
The interesting thing is that either we believe in life after death or we argue that there is no form of life after one dies, we are in the same boat — we both are talking about something we don’t know or something that is mysterious. It is futile to make arguments on such issues. What makes sense is to make lifespan between birth and death a meaningful, liveable and an inspiration to the coming generation. Please don’t look at the result — some are more while others are less successful, but we should always make positive efforts to make our life worth-living.
Human beings with their brain and efforts are capable of making the earth like heaven. Millions of people in the world are living very stressful life under terrorism, war, crime, suppression, poverty, famine and lack of infrastructures or services. Those people believe that their circumstances are no better than the definition of ‘hell’. Our collective and constructive efforts make our society free of those ills and make everyone happy.
Death is inevitable and it is an unavoidable truth. Death ends our physical life, but there are many things that we can do to make our life immortal even after death. Only the good deeds on earth make our life worthwhile long after we say goodbye to earth.
Apart from living only for ourselves, if we think a little about others, help them, and share happiness and pain with them, that would make us remembered after our demise. Those persons who make others happy, invent something that serves humanity, help needy people, contribute for sustainable development and do something for welfare of human existence and earth, will never die. They will remain in the hearts and memory of hundreds of thousands of people for hundreds of years with honour. So let’s make a small effort to give care, compassion and comfort to others. True meaning of life lies on other’s happiness, which is the way to make our life ‘immortal’. At this point, debate on whether there is life after death or not becomes insignificant. |
