Ahhh memes! You either love them⦠or you REALLY love them. If youāre like me, your likes on Twitter and saved posts on Instagram are filled with memes. You even constantly send them to your friends and your friends constantly send them back to you, and when you donāt get any, your day feels slightly empty.
I had such a hard time picking just one meme to focus on⦠from the iconic, ā
cash me ousside⦠how bow dat
,ā to Arthurās simple, but very emotion-filled
fist
, and
shocked white guy blinking
. But the meme that I felt the most passion for and relation to was Mocking SpongeBob or SpongeMock. I know this one may not be the funniest but I certainly find it hilarious! Maybe because I loved SpongeBob as a kid or maybe because my sense of humour sucks and I see so much of myself in SpongeMock.

The Mocking SpongeBob meme takes 3 steps:
1. Write something that you think deserves to be mocked, like something obvious that doesnāt need to be said, a lie thatās being told, or just something you donāt want to hear or have heard enough of.
2. Retype the same phrase, but in a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters.
3. Complete the meme by including the infamous SpongeMock image.
So how did we get so lucky to be honoured with such a flattering image of Mr. SquarePants?
This image comes from an episode of
SpongeBob SquarePants
called, ā
Little Yellow Book
,ā which aired in 2012. In the episode, Squidward reads SpongeBobās diary and finds out that whenever he sees a plaid pattern, he clucks like a chicken (source:
KnowYourMeme
). Shortly after, Mr. Krabs comes out in a plaid quilt and then TA-DA⦠SpongeMock was born!

The Mocking Spongebob meme has many variations and remakes, but the popular image was first posted by twitter user, @OGBEARD. Unfortunately, the his account, has been suspended. But the original tweet from May 4th 2017 said āhow i stare back at little kids when they stare for too longā followed by the SpongeMock image.
The first time SpongeMock was used in itās (almost) signature meme form with the alternation of uppercase and lowercase letters happened on May 5th 2017, by user
@lexysaeyang
. Her tweet was accompanied by an image of a chick with arms, which SpongeMock resembled very much.

)
Then on May 6th 2017, the chick with arms picture was dropped and thousands of memes were created with Mocking SpongeBob! Here are some of the most iconic and relatable ones (in my opinion).

But, nonetheless it amazes me how even though weāre all different, itās almost like thereās a universal āmockingā voice in our heads when we read those words spelled out LiKE tHis! With that said, I think memes bring people together and make the world a little bit better. |
