To start off, I love memes. I will spend hours on instagram looking at memes about everything and anything. If you haven’t been caught up with the
fun
side of the internet for the past couple years you may have missed out on the whole meme ordeal; so, what is a
Meme
, you may ask ?
A meme is a image usually screen shotted (from a movie/show/scene) or captured image, that is edited away from its original source and used to portray different messages. A meme can be used as a cultural symbol, or to display a social message, usually in a humorous way. Memes are mainly used in a mocking tone to relate to a variety of things from the creator being stressed out at school to their views on political events.

The meme I chose to write about is the
Condescending Wonka
meme (An example which i generated in the photo above). As a relatively sarcastic person, I love a good sarcastic meme. While from a very cheerful, and slightly dark, children’s film
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
(The Original Version), the
Willy Wonka mem
e is used for a much more condescending message. The meme is said to actually be based off of Mr.Wonka’s condescending behaviour in film. In the original scene Wonka is seen to have a sparkle in hid eye as he talks about his latest Gobstopper machine; however, in a still frame, poor Wonka is captured to have a condescending/creepy smile.
Image: Knowyourmeme
The meme was originally posted dating back to January 2011 as the “You must be new here” meme. It was then changed to the Condescending / Creepy Wonka, as the meme’s catch phrase was continually changed. While the messages behind this meme are sometimes insulting or demeaning, it does so with a very humorous effect, which could very well be the reason it is so popular.

The popularity seemed to have spiked in April 2012, when the google search for “condescending Wonka” (red line) and “creepy Wonka” (blue line) reached it’s peak. Although it’s now 2018, 6 years after its original spike, it is still widely used today. Over the years this meme has found its popularity on the internet, and is enjoyed by all. |
