UPDATE: Jan. 7, 2021, 2:11 p.m. PST
This post has been updated to include information from Twitter about Trump deleting the violating tweets.
The chorus of social platforms banning President Donald Trump keeps growing stronger.
On Wednesday, after a day which saw Donald Trump
use Twitter
to seemingly encourage violent extremists
storming
the U.S. Capitol building, the company temporarily locked Trump's Twitter account and laid out the conditions under which it would permanently suspend the President.
Soon after, Facebook
announced
it had banned Trump from posting to his Facebook profile for 24 hours. Then Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, made the same call. Then Snapchat
followed suit,
though without any stipulation on duration. And by Thursday, Facebook and Instagram said they were
banning Trump indefinitely.
Twitch joined in and disabled Trump's account Thursday as well, noting in a statement to Mashable that it would "reassess his account after he leaves office."
"As a result of the unprecedented and ongoing violent situation in Washington, D.C., we have required the removal of three @realDonaldTrump Tweets that were posted earlier today for repeated and severe violations of our Civic Integrity policy," Twitter
wrote
in a tweet explaining its plan. "This means that the account of @realDonaldTrump will be locked for 12 hours following the removal of these Tweets."

The three tweets in question included
a wild video
in which Trump falsely claimed the election "was stolen."
On Thursday, Twitter confirmed that Trump has deleted the violating tweets, but wouldn't specifically say if Trump currently is able to tweet.
"We can confirm that the violative Tweets have been deleted. Confirming the 12 hour lock did begin after the Tweets were deleted, but we've nothing more specific to share on timing," a Twitter spokesperson said. This appears to contradict an earlier statement by Twitter to Mashable, which suggested the 12-hour countdown began when Twitter hid the tweets. Trump has yet to tweet since complying with Twitter's demand.

For its part, Facebook's initial 24-hour ban followed two policy violations. One offending post included the same video Twitter removed and another that included falsities about the election results. "We made the decision that on balance these posts contribute to, rather than diminish, the risk of ongoing violence," Facebook said in a
blog post.
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.
Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, tweeted about its ban about 20 minutes after Facebook's initial announcement with no additional information.

Trump was also unceremoniously shoved off Snapchat Wednesday, Snap spokeswoman Rachel Racusen telling
The Information
this was done before the president shared his dangerously false video to other social media platforms.
"We can confirm that earlier today we locked President Trump’s Snapchat account," said Racusen in a statement.
Snap hasn't put any set length on Trump's exile, meaning it's anyone's guess when — or if — he will return. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Thursday that Facebook's and Instagram's bans will last at least until after Joe Biden's inauguration because the risks are "simply too great." Like Snap, Twitch confirmed it disabled Trump's account preemptively; his Twitch account had not shared the offending video.
"In light of yesterday’s shocking attack on the Capitol, we have disabled President Trump’s Twitch channel," a Twitch spokesperson said. "Given the current extraordinary circumstances and the President's incendiary rhetoric, we believe this is a necessary step to protect our community and prevent Twitch from being used to incite further violence."
Notably, Twitter took things even further — confirming that it will in fact permanently suspend @realDonaldTrump's account if he continues violating Twitter policy.
"Future violations of the Twitter Rules, including our Civic Integrity or Violent Threats policies, will result in permanent suspension of the @realDonaldTrump account,"
wrote Twitter
.
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.
If only Twitter had done that, oh, let's say around
four years ago
. Same goes for Facebook, which has only recently started slightly pushing back against Trump's policy violations. Twitch suspended Trump for two weeks over the summer after his account streamed rallies featuring racist rhetoric.

In the mobile world, the word "free" is usually followed by a list of caveats that make you wish you never started looking for a deal. You usually need to sign up for the most expensive plan or trade-in a premium phone to get your hands on what you really want. But that's not the case with the [latest T-Mobile offer](https://zdcs.link/QpB2qo?pageview_type=Standard&template=article&module=content_body&element=offer&item=text-link&element_label=latest+T-Mobile+offer&object_type=article&object_uuid=06FGv3DG4ZPcGa5oIAkxDVU&short_url=QpB2qo&u=https%3A%2F%2Fmashable.com%2Farticle%2Fapril-11-free-apple-iphone-deal&session_uuid=42e08281-fc12-45d5-abb2-08a982ca6d06&view_instance_uuid=f6440190-aa65-4b9c-af1b-e8464b46290f "(opens in a new window)").
T-Mobile is offering a rare deal on the newly-released [Apple iPhone 17e](https://mashable.com/article/apple-announces-iphone-17e-budget-smartphone). For a limited time, you can pick up this A19-powered device for free by simply opening a new line.
You’ll need to activate a new line on T-Mobile’s Experience Beyond or Experience More plans to get the iPhone 17e. The phone’s full retail price is covered via 24 monthly bill credits, and since you aren't trading in your old phone, you can keep it as a backup, give it to a kid, or sell it on a third-party site to actually make money on this deal. We did say this was a rare opportunity to save.
Mashable's Stan Shroeder [got his hands on the iPhone 17e](https://mashable.com/article/iphone-17e-hands-on-apple) and said "The combination of having Apple's latest chip and a decent amount of storage means this phone will be relevant for at least four to five years." # How attendees at The Masters are beating the tech ban
Can the tournament keep your tech out?

If you happen to catch a broadcast of [The Masters](https://www.masters.com/index.html "(opens in a new window)") this weekend, you'll probably notice a few obvious things: the undeniable talent of the players, the immaculate conditions of the course, and the sea of attendees wearing green as if it's a second St. Patrick's Day. But there's one other thing conspicuously *absent* from the weekend festivities: smartphones.
Unlike other sporting events, sometimes heavily attended by people who paid obscene amounts of money to watch the excitement through the lens of an iPhone, The Masters bans all recording and communication devices, from phones and tablets to digital cameras. It's right there in black and white on [their list of Prohibited Items](https://www.masters.com/en_US/prohibited_items.html "(opens in a new window)"), above "knives and weapons of any kind" (so you know they take it seriously).
But, [according to Golf Monthly](https://www.golfmonthly.com/news/masters-patrons-meta-glasses-cell-phone-policy "(opens in a new window)"), some sneaky attendees are finding a way to circumvent the ban: wearable technology. The latest smartwatches from Apple and Google are easily able to send and receive both text messages and phone calls, while the [Ray-Ban Meta glasses](https://mashable.com/article/ray-ban-meta-smartglasses-review-roundup) are subtle enough to pass as regular eyewear (especially if worn under a golf cap).
In response to the [videos surfacing online of people sneaking in recording eyewear](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/XN_qD60hBTA "(opens in a new window)"), golf reporter Daniel Rapaport was unequivocal: "Augusta’s no-phones rule needs to be updated to no phones or wearable technology. No Meta glasses, no Apple watches. The mystique of the Masters must be protected and it’s slipping."
> [This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.](https://twitter.com/Daniel_Rapaport/status/2042231662470197686 "(Opens in a new tab) (opens in a new window)")
If there's any sporting event likely to die on this hill and strengthen their policy to keep all devices out, it's The Masters. But if the legions of happy fans strolling the course over the weekend, largely oblivious to the goings-on on Twitter and Facebook, are any indication, it may be for the greater good that they do.

# XChat to launch on iPhone and iPad
Can this X-affiliated chat app compete with WhatsApp and Signal?

The platform formerly known as Twitter is learning new tricks. X is looking to expand its reach by launching XChat, a standalone messaging app promising end-to-end encryption, no ads and no tracking, at least according to the [Apple press release](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/xchat/id6760873038 "(opens in a new window)").
> [This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.](https://twitter.com/chat/status/2042693811101483267 "(Opens in a new tab) (opens in a new window)")
In addition to the traditional text-based messages already offered by X, XChat promises to offer both audio and video calling, as well as the ability to send documents, create group chats, and edit or delete your sent messages. If the screenshots shared by X are accurate, the interface is minimalistic, emphasizing active chats in "a private, focused space built for conversation," according to Apple's press release.
Despite the claims of "privacy" and "end-to-end" encryption, some X users are pointing out what they perceive to be a contradiction in the app's privacy policy.
How is it, they're asking, that an app that cares about user privacy also links so much personal information, from your location and contact list to your search history and your user profile?
> [This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.](https://twitter.com/d_paulson203/status/2042702200905043994 "(Opens in a new tab) (opens in a new window)")
Musk took to Twitter earlier this month to disparage the privacy policy of WhatsApp. WhatsApp [pushed back against the claims](https://uk.news.yahoo.com/elon-musk-says-cant-trust-180116193.html "(opens in a new window)").
> [This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.](https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/2042290524565225572 "(Opens in a new tab) (opens in a new window)")
XChat will only be accessible to people with an X account, and will only launch for the iPhone and iPad, according to the release, leaving out the Android market.
Given that apps including Signal and WhatsApp don't require a separate account on another platform, it remains to be seen if XChat can attract enough users to compete at the same scale.
With an expected launch of April 17, though, we won't need to wait long to find out.

The chorus of social platforms banning President Donald Trump keeps growing stronger.
On Wednesday, after a day which saw Donald Trump [use Twitter](https://mashable.com/article/trump-tweet-us-capitol-rioters-twitter/) to seemingly encourage violent extremists [storming](https://mashable.com/article/qanon-capitol-trump-jake-angeli/) the U.S. Capitol building, the company temporarily locked Trump's Twitter account and laid out the conditions under which it would permanently suspend the President.
Soon after, Facebook [announced](https://twitter.com/fbnewsroom/status/1346994037786619905 "(opens in a new window)") it had banned Trump from posting to his Facebook profile for 24 hours. Then Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, made the same call. Then Snapchat [followed suit,](https://www.theinformation.com/briefings/2e4923 "(opens in a new window)") though without any stipulation on duration. And by Thursday, Facebook and Instagram said they were [banning Trump indefinitely.](https://mashable.com/article/zuckerberg-facebook-blocks-trump/) Twitch joined in and disabled Trump's account Thursday as well, noting in a statement to Mashable that it would "reassess his account after he leaves office."
"As a result of the unprecedented and ongoing violent situation in Washington, D.C., we have required the removal of three @realDonaldTrump Tweets that were posted earlier today for repeated and severe violations of our Civic Integrity policy," Twitter [wrote](https://twitter.com/TwitterSafety/status/1346970430062485505 "(opens in a new window)") in a tweet explaining its plan. "This means that the account of @realDonaldTrump will be locked for 12 hours following the removal of these Tweets."
Mashable Light Speed

The three tweets in question included [a wild video](https://mashable.com/article/donald-trump-twitter-video/) in which Trump falsely claimed the election "was stolen."

"We made the decision that on balance these posts contribute to, rather than diminish, the risk of ongoing violence," Facebook said in a [blog post.](https://about.fb.com/news/2021/01/responding-to-the-violence-in-washington-dc/ "(opens in a new window)")
> [This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.](https://twitter.com/fbnewsroom/status/1346994037786619905 "(Opens in a new tab) (opens in a new window)")
Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, tweeted about its ban about 20 minutes after Facebook's initial announcement with no additional information.
> [This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.](https://twitter.com/mosseri/status/1346999536447795202 "(Opens in a new tab) (opens in a new window)")
Trump was also unceremoniously shoved off Snapchat Wednesday, Snap spokeswoman Rachel Racusen telling [*The Information*](https://www.theinformation.com/briefings/2e4923 "(opens in a new window)") this was done before the president shared his dangerously false video to other social media platforms.
"Future violations of the Twitter Rules, including our Civic Integrity or Violent Threats policies, will result in permanent suspension of the @realDonaldTrump account," [wrote Twitter](https://twitter.com/TwitterSafety/status/1346970432017031178 "(opens in a new window)").
> [This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.](https://twitter.com/TwitterSafety/status/1346970432017031178 "(Opens in a new tab) (opens in a new window)")
If only Twitter had done that, oh, let's say around [four years ago](https://mashable.com/article/twitter-ban-donald-trump-inexcusable). Same goes for Facebook, which has only recently started slightly pushing back against Trump's policy violations. Twitch suspended Trump for two weeks over the summer after his account streamed rallies featuring racist rhetoric.
