Tesla's Bitcoin bet hasn't gone all that great.
In its earnings report for the second quarter of 2022, the company revealed it has sold three quarters of its Bitcoin holdings.
"As of the end of Q2, we have converted approximately 75% of our Bitcoin purchases into fiat currency. Conversions in Q2 added $936M of cash to our balance sheet," says Tesla's latest
shareholder deck
.

invested
roughly $1.5 billion in Bitcoin back in 2021. If selling 75% of that netted $936 million in cash, that means the company lost roughly $189 million on its Bitcoin bet (so far), which isn't even that bad given
how low the price of Bitcoin
went earlier this year.

Shortly after its Bitcoin purchase, Tesla said it would start accepting bitcoins as payment for its cars. That lasted
only a couple of months
, though CEO Elon Musk did say Tesla would resume Bitcoin purchases when the cryptocurrency gets greener. Notably, Musk said at the time that "Tesla will not be selling any Bitcoin."
During the company's earnings call Wednesday, Musk
said
Tesla sold the bitcoins to "maximize [its] cash position," which was important to do "given the uncertainty of COVID lockdowns in China." He also said that the company's decision to sell Bitcoin should not be taken as "some verdict" on the cryptocurrency, and that Tesla remains open to buy Bitcoin again in the future.
There's good news for fans of Dogecoin, though, as Musk
said on the earnings call
that the company hasn't sold any of the DOGE it owns. Tesla
started accepting the cryptocurrency
for some of its merch in January 2022, and later expanded that to accept DOGE at some
Supercharger stations
. There's no telling how much Dogecoin Tesla owns, though. According to the shareholder deck, the company still has $218 million in "digital assets," though the bulk of that has to be Bitcoin.

SAVE UP TO $9.01:
The new Apple MacBook Neo is on sale on Amazon as of March 18. Save $4 on the
256GB base model
(now $595) and about $9 on the
512GB version with Touch ID
(now $689.99). Hey, it's something.

It ain't much, but it's honest work: Amazon just put the brand-new Apple MacBook Neo on sale for the first time since its March 11 launch. The 256GB base configuration is marked down to $595, and the upgraded 512GB version with Touch ID is sitting at $689.99 in — a savings of $4 and $9.01, respectively.
Amazon will probably dish out much better discounts on the MacBook Neo this summer during its
Prime Day
sale. (I can't see it getting dramatically cheaper than this between now and next week's
Big Spring Sale
.) But to date, this is the best deal on new models with no strings attached.
Best Buy
has some Neos that are around $20 off, but they're open-box, i.e. returned. The
Apple Store
will give you $100 off, but only if you're a college student, a parent of one, or school faculty.

The MacBook Neo is powered by a capable A18 Pro chip with 8GB of RAM. It's not as good for multitasking as a
MacBook Air
with more memory, but its perfect for folks who only have a couple tabs open at any given time. It can churn through basic tasks as fast as last year's
M4 MacBook Air
— think web browsing and sending emails.
In heavier workloads like video editing, it's just as zippy as an
M1 MacBook Air
from 2020. It offers around 15 hours of battery life per charge.
Features-wise, the Neo comes with a 13-inch Liquid Retina display, a 1080p webcam, a clicky mechanical touchpad, and Dolby Atmos speakers. Its all-aluminum chassis comes in four colors: indigo, silver, blush, and a punchy "citrus" yellow-green. (Amazon's deal only applied to the silver one at the time of writing, but that might change by the time you read this.)
"For students, young people, and casual users, there's nothing else like [the Neo] at this price," writes Mashable tech editor Timothy Beck Werth, who rated it a 4.8/5. (

The exploit doesn't even require anything to be downloaded on a victim's iPhone.
Cybersecurity groups are sounding the alarm about DarkSword, the latest hacker tool that targets iPhone users.
Credit: Jakub Porzycki/NurPhoto via Getty Images
Google, along with two cybersecurity firms, are warning iPhone users of a new exploit that can steal data — all from just visiting a website on a user's iOS device.
DarkSword is a new hacking toolkit being deployed by bad actors on a global scale. The reports by
Google Threat Intelligence Group
and cybersecurity companies
Lookout
and
iVerify
detailed multiple vulnerabilities used to carry out attacks against iOS devices running versions 18.4 through 18.7.
According to Apple's
own developer website
, nearly 25 percent of all iPhones are still on some version of iOS 18.
Wired
points out that this means there are potentially hundreds of millions of iOS devices susceptible to DarkSword.
What makes DarkSword so concerning? Unlike most malware, DarkSword doesn't need to be installed on a target's device. A victim simply needs to visit an infected website. From there, DarkSword steals personal or financial data. And unlike most spyware, DarkSword isn't being used for long-term espionage.Â
"As opposed to many other previously reported cases of sophisticated attacks on mobile devices, DarkSword is not designed for ongoing surveillance," writes Lookout in its report. "Once it finishes collecting and exfiltrating the targeted data, it deletes the files it created on the filesystem of the device and exits. Its dwell time on the device is likely in the range of minutes, depending on the amount of data it discovers and exfiltrates."
Hackers utilizing DarkSword take what they want from the victim within a short period. Once an infected device is restarted, the spyware is nearly undetectable on the device.
DarkSword can be used to siphon all sorts of personal data from an iOS device to a nefarious actor. Call logs, contacts, calendars, notes, photos, screenshots, location history, web browser history, signed in account identities, device keychains, SIM card info, Find My Phone settings, WiFi passwords, iCloud content, and more can be sent to the threat actor through this attack. iMessage data, email, WhatsApp data, Telegram data, and even cryptocurrency wallet credentials can also be stolenl.
Another concerning aspect of DarkSword is the cleanup of the cybercrime scene afterward. There is none. Hackers who have utilized DarkSword have left the code behind for anyone to access and deploy. In addition, it appears these hackers aren't concerned with its discovery, resulting in the closure of the exploit, meaning they are likely confident new and similar attacks can be replicated with new tools.
Google's report details some specific attacks carried out by DarkSword. For example, one early incident in November targeted Saudi Arabian users through a Snapchat-themed website called Snapshare. The website forwarded visitors to a legitimate Snapchat site while it infected the device in order to hide the nefarious activity.
In more recent attacks carried out just this month, a hacker group with suspected ties to the Russian government, known as UNC6353, deployed DarkSword in order to target iPhone users in Ukraine. The group was somehow able to compromise legitimate Ukrainian news sites and official government websites to target its victims.
It is believed this threat actor is also behind a previously uncovered yet similar exploit known as Coruna earlier this year. That hacking toolkit targeted even older iOS devices that were still using iOS versions 13 through 17. |

It ain't much, but it's honest work: Amazon just put the brand-new Apple MacBook Neo on sale for the first time since its March 11 launch. The 256GB base configuration is marked down to \$595, and the upgraded 512GB version with Touch ID is sitting at \$689.99 in — a savings of \$4 and \$9.01, respectively.
Amazon will probably dish out much better discounts on the MacBook Neo this summer during its [Prime Day](https://mashable.com/article/amazon-moving-prime-day-sale-july-to-june-report) sale. (I can't see it getting dramatically cheaper than this between now and next week's [Big Spring Sale](https://mashable.com/article/best-amazon-spring-sale-macbook-deals-2026).) But to date, this is the best deal on new models with no strings attached.
[Best Buy](https://zdcs.link/aB8npb?pageview_type=Standard&template=article&module=content_body&element=offer&item=text-link&element_label=Best+Buy&object_type=article&object_uuid=046V8XoPkl94nlzyDR85OGc&short_url=aB8npb&u=https%3A%2F%2Fmashable.com%2Farticle%2Fmarch-18-apple-macbook-neo-deal&session_uuid=ca6bd993-9e30-4051-a9f3-4ce040ff1631&view_instance_uuid=06f13e5b-6d6d-49b7-9102-6f7597dca839 "(opens in a new window)") has some Neos that are around \$20 off, but they're open-box, i.e. returned. The MacBook Neo is powered by a capable A18 Pro chip with 8GB of RAM. It's not as good for multitasking as a [MacBook Air](https://mashable.com/review/apple-macbook-pro-m5-2025) with more memory, but its perfect for folks who only have a couple tabs open at any given time. It can churn through basic tasks as fast as last year's [M4 MacBook Air](https://mashable.com/review/apple-m4-macbook-air) — think web browsing and sending emails.
In heavier workloads like video editing, it's just as zippy as an [M1 MacBook Air](https://mashable.com/review/macbook-air-m1-chip-2020-review) from 2020.

"For students, young people, and casual users, there's nothing else like \[the Neo\] at this price," writes Mashable tech editor Timothy Beck Werth, who rated it a 4.8/5. ([Check out his full review.](https://mashable.com/review/apple-macbook-neo-budget-laptop))

# Hackers target millions of iPhones with new DarkSword spyware
The exploit doesn't even require anything to be downloaded on a victim's iPhone.

***
Google, along with two cybersecurity firms, are warning iPhone users of a new exploit that can steal data — all from just visiting a website on a user's iOS device.
DarkSword is a new hacking toolkit being deployed by bad actors on a global scale. The reports by [Google Threat Intelligence Group](https://cloud.google.com/blog/topics/threat-intelligence/darksword-ios-exploit-chain "(opens in a new window)") and cybersecurity companies [Lookout](https://www.lookout.com/threat-intelligence/article/darksword "(opens in a new window)") and [iVerify](https://iverify.io/blog/darksword-ios-exploit-kit-explained "(opens in a new window)") detailed multiple vulnerabilities used to carry out attacks against iOS devices running versions 18.4 through 18.7.
According to Apple's [own developer website](https://developer.apple.com/support/app-store/ "(opens in a new window)"), nearly 25 percent of all iPhones are still on some version of iOS 18. [*Wired*](https://www.wired.com/story/hundreds-of-millions-of-iphones-can-be-hacked-with-a-new-tool-found-in-the-wild/ "(opens in a new window)")points out that this means there are potentially hundreds of millions of iOS devices susceptible to DarkSword.
What makes DarkSword so concerning? Unlike most malware, DarkSword doesn't need to be installed on a target's device. A victim simply needs to visit an infected website. From there, DarkSword steals personal or financial data. And unlike most spyware, DarkSword isn't being used for long-term espionage.

Conversions in Q2 added \$936M of cash to our balance sheet," says Tesla's latest [shareholder deck](https://ir.tesla.com/#tab-quarterly-disclosure "(opens in a new window)").

Tesla [invested](https://mashable.com/article/tesla-bitcoin-2-billion) roughly \$1.5 billion in Bitcoin back in 2021. If selling 75% of that netted \$936 million in cash, that means the company lost roughly \$189 million on its Bitcoin bet (so far), which isn't even that bad given [how low the price of Bitcoin](https://mashable.com/article/bitcoin-price-plummets-record-low) went earlier this year.

Shortly after its Bitcoin purchase, Tesla said it would start accepting bitcoins as payment for its cars. That lasted [only a couple of months](https://mashable.com/article/elon-musk-tesla-suspends-bitcoin), though CEO Elon Musk did say Tesla would resume Bitcoin purchases when the cryptocurrency gets greener. Notably, Musk said at the time that "Tesla will not be selling any Bitcoin."
During the company's earnings call Wednesday, Musk [said](https://decrypt.co/105619/elon-musk-tesla-sold-its-bitcoin-because-of-covid-lockdowns-in-china-2 "(opens in a new window)") Tesla sold the bitcoins to "maximize \[its\] cash position," which was important to do "given the uncertainty of COVID lockdowns in China." He also said that the company's decision to sell Bitcoin should not be taken as "some verdict" on the cryptocurrency, and that Tesla remains open to buy Bitcoin again in the future.
There's good news for fans of Dogecoin, though, as Musk [said on the earnings call](https://techcrunch.com/2022/07/20/elon-musk-discloses-that-tesla-owns-dogecoin-but-how-much-does-it-have/ "(opens in a new window)") that the company hasn't sold any of the DOGE it owns. Tesla [started accepting the cryptocurrency](https://mashable.com/article/tesla-shop-dogecoin) for some of its merch in January 2022, and later expanded that to accept DOGE at some [Supercharger stations](https://www.business-standard.com/article/international/tesla-to-accept-dogecoin-as-payment-at-supercharging-station-122022000267_1.html "(opens in a new window)"). There's no telling how much Dogecoin Tesla owns, though. According to the shareholder deck, the company still has \$218 million in "digital assets," though the bulk of that has to be Bitcoin.

**SAVE UP TO \$9.01:** The new Apple MacBook Neo is on sale on Amazon as of March 18.
[Best Buy](https://zdcs.link/aB8npb?pageview_type=Standard&template=article&module=content_body&element=offer&item=text-link&element_label=Best+Buy&object_type=article&object_uuid=046V8XoPkl94nlzyDR85OGc&short_url=aB8npb&u=https%3A%2F%2Fmashable.com%2Farticle%2Fmarch-18-apple-macbook-neo-deal&session_uuid=ca6bd993-9e30-4051-a9f3-4ce040ff1631&view_instance_uuid=06f13e5b-6d6d-49b7-9102-6f7597dca839 "(opens in a new window)") has some Neos that are around \$20 off, but they're open-box, i.e. returned. The [Apple Store](https://zdcs.link/aD8G3b?pageview_type=Standard&template=article&module=content_body&element=offer&item=text-link&element_label=Apple+Store&object_type=article&object_uuid=046V8XoPkl94nlzyDR85OGc&short_url=aD8G3b&u=https%3A%2F%2Fmashable.com%2Farticle%2Fmarch-18-apple-macbook-neo-deal&session_uuid=ca6bd993-9e30-4051-a9f3-4ce040ff1631&view_instance_uuid=06f13e5b-6d6d-49b7-9102-6f7597dca839 "(opens in a new window)") will give you \$100 off, but only if you're a college student, a parent of one, or school faculty.

We tested an indigo MacBook Neo. We loved it. Credit: Joe Maldonado / Mashable
"For students, young people, and casual users, there's nothing else like \[the Neo\] at this price," writes Mashable tech editor Timothy Beck Werth, who rated it a 4.8/5. ([Check out his full review.](https://mashable.com/review/apple-macbook-neo-budget-laptop))
If you're not sure whether the Neo is right for you, read our analysis of how it stacks up against the new [M5 MacBook Air](https://mashable.com/comparison/macbook-neo-vs-macbook-air-m5) and [older M-series models](https://mashable.com/article/macbook-neo-vs-older-macbook-air-models).

You can get a personal trainer for your body, but what about your brain? Fortunately, there’s now an app for that — [memoryOS](https://zdcs.link/QW62X6?pageview_type=Standard&template=article&module=content_body&element=offer&item=text-link&element_label=memoryOS&object_type=article&object_uuid=00uqPwdY3vWWHh9f73rtkBQ&short_url=QW62X6&u=https%3A%2F%2Fmashable.com%2Farticle%2Fmarch-18-memoryos-lifetime-subscription-student-plan&session_uuid=ca6bd993-9e30-4051-a9f3-4ce040ff1631&view_instance_uuid=06f13e5b-6d6d-49b7-9102-6f7597dca839 "(opens in a new window)"). It gives users an average 70% increase in memory recall, and right now you can secure a lifetime subscription to the [memoryOS Student Plan](https://zdcs.link/QW62X6?pageview_type=Standard&template=article&module=content_body&element=offer&item=text-link&element_label=memoryOS+Student+Plan&object_type=article&object_uuid=00uqPwdY3vWWHh9f73rtkBQ&short_url=QW62X6&u=https%3A%2F%2Fmashable.com%2Farticle%2Fmarch-18-memoryos-lifetime-subscription-student-plan&session_uuid=ca6bd993-9e30-4051-a9f3-4ce040ff1631&view_instance_uuid=06f13e5b-6d6d-49b7-9102-6f7597dca839 "(opens in a new window)") for just \$79.99 (MSRP \$198).
While there are many [apps](https://mashable.com/category/apps-software) on the market promising they can give your memory a boost, memoryOS actually uses scientifically proven methods that truly work. The exploit doesn't even require anything to be downloaded on a victim's iPhone.
