The Trump administration declared Anthropic a 'supply-chain risk.' Now the CEO is fighting back.
The U.S. government officially designated Anthropic as a supply-chain risk and the AI company has now responded.
Credit: Thomas Fuller/NurPhoto via Getty Images
The Department of Defense, known under the Trump administration as the Department of War, has just officially designated AI company Anthropic a "supply-chain risk" to national security. But Anthropic isn't buying it.
"We do not believe this action is legally sound, and we see no choice but to challenge it in court," Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei wrote in a
statement
responding to the ongoing dispute. Amodei also emphasized that the designation does not affect the majority of Anthropic customers.
Anthropic is "proud of the work" it has done alongside the federal government in "supporting frontline warfighters with applications such as intelligence analysis, modeling and simulation, operational planning, cyber operations, and more," Amodei said.
The dispute began over the potential use of Anthropic's AI technology to carry out mass domestic surveillance, and to power autonomous weapons like drones. The relationship between Anthropic and the U.S. military
deteriorated
last week, after the AI company won a $200 million contact from the federal government â but sought guarantees that its technology would not be used for surveillance, or weapons that can fire without humans in the loop. Â
The U.S. government would not agree to Anthropic's terms and threatened to designate the company a supply-chain risk, which it has now done. Trump also issued an executive order that tells every federal agency to stop using Anthropic's AI.
Amodei apologized for the leak of an internal memo, and confirmed
recent reports
that Anthropic and the Department of Defense have re-entered negotiations. If the two sides can't come to terms, Anthropic will assist the government in a transitional period, Amodei said.
The CEO also referenced the U.S. government's deal with OpenAI, made in the wake of the Anthropic dispute. Even OpenAI "characterized" its deal with the U.S. government as "confusing," he said.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was
forced
to address the deal after receiving significant blowback from users.
"Our most important priority right now is making sure that our warfighters and national security experts are not deprived of important tools in the middle of major combat operations," Amodei wrote. "Anthropic will provide our models to the Department of War and national security community, at nominal cost and with continuing support from our engineers, for as long as is necessary to make that transition, and for as long as we are permitted to do so."
As the
Wall Street Journal
previously reported, the U.S. military has already used Anthropic's Claude models to aid in carrying out strikes in Iran.
Developers can now officially integrate AI agents into Google Workspace.

OpenClaw
has taken the AI industry by storm over the past few months, inspiring a new AI term for personal AI agents â
claws
. It's now so popular that even Google can't ignore it.
If you're a Google Workspace user, Google has now released a command-line interface (CLI) that officially gives developers a way to integrate third-party AI agents like OpenClaw into the Workspace platform. This means that OpenClaw and other AI assistants can connect to a user's Google Workspace services such as Gmail and Google Drive.
Google published the
Google Workspace CLI on Github
just days ago alongside specific documentation on how to integrate OpenClaw. The documentation also includes guidance on how to connect MCP (Model Context Protocol) compatible apps such as the Claude Desktop app and the Gemini CLI.
As
PCWorld
noted, OpenClaw and similar claws could already connect to Google Workspace. However, this involved workarounds and the use of multiple APIs to integrate AI assistants into Google's services and platforms.
While the Google CLI is an official Google release, the company shared that it's ânot an officially supported Google product" and is more for developer use than the average Google user.
Still, this is a notable move from Google. It's a first step in Google basically embracing claws and giving developers a legitimate way to integrate them into their Google Workspace account.
OpenClaw went viral earlier this year and basically became the standard-bearer for agentic AI tools. Last month, OpenAI
hired
OpenClaw's founder Peter Steinberger, who joined the company with a goal "to build an agent that even my mum can use."
The latest model from OpenAI comes just days after the company launched GPT-5.3 Instant.
Credit: Samuel Boivin/NurPhoto via Getty Images
OpenAI
dropped GPTâ5.4 this week, and the company said ChatGPT power users should notice improvements right away. The launch comes just days after the
launch of GPT-5.3 Instant
, a more conversational model geared toward everyday users.
OpenAI wrote that GPT-5.4 is the "most capable and efficient frontier model for professional work." So, obviously, GPT-5.4 is designed for professionals and developers. The company also announced the launch of GPT-5.4 Thinking and GPTâ5.4 Pro, aimed at people who want peak performance.
Here are three improvements that OpenAI made.
Improved efficiency
OpenAI said that GPT-5.4 operates more efficiently than ever.
It
wrote that
it was the company's "most token-efficient reasoning model yet, using significantly fewer tokens to solve problems when compared to GPTâ5.2, translating to reduced token usage and faster speeds." Basically, that means GPT-5.4 can solve problems and deliver answers with fewer tokens.
Better at doing real-world tasks
OpenAI said that the new model was far more capable of completing real-world tasks related to knowledge work.
Wrote OpenAI: "On
GDPvalâ
, which tests agentsâ abilities to produce well-specified knowledge work across 44 occupations, GPTâ5.4 achieves a new state of the art, matching or exceeding industry professionals in 83.0% of comparisons, compared to 70.9% for GPTâ5.2."
In other words, it's capable of doing a lot of people's jobs reasonably well.
Improved accuracy
OpenAI claimed that GPT-5.4 cut down on mistakes. Compared with GPT-5.2, OpenAI said the model is 33 percent less likely to make false claims and its claims were 18 percent less likely to contain any errors, according to OpenAI.
More flexible approach to thinking
Instead of simply giving GPT-5.4 a prompt and letting it do its thing, you can course-correct the model as it goes.
"In ChatGPT, GPTâ5.4 Thinking can now provide an upfront plan of its thinking, so you can
adjust course mid-response
while itâs working
,
and arrive at a final output thatâs more closely aligned with what you need without additional turns."
ChatGPT for Excel add-in
Enterprise customers can also use GPT-5.4 with a new OpenAI plugin, the
ChatGPT for Excel add-in
. per OpenAI, the latest models will be more capable of creating and analyzing spreadsheets.
How to try GPT-5.4
As per usual, the new model starts rolling out today. It will be available in ChatGPT, Codex, and via the API. For this release, you'll need a paid ChatGPT subscription to use the new models, at least, for now.

The documentation also includes guidance on how to connect MCP (Model Context Protocol) compatible apps such as the Claude Desktop app and the Gemini CLI.
As [PCWorld](https://www.pcworld.com/article/3079523 "(opens in a new window)") noted, OpenClaw and similar claws could already connect to Google Workspace.
Last month, OpenAI [hired](https://mashable.com/article/openclaw-founder-peter-steinberger-joins-openai) OpenClaw's founder Peter Steinberger, who joined the company with a goal "to build an agent that even my mum can use."

[OpenAI](https://mashable.com/category/openai) dropped GPTâ5.4 this week, and the company said ChatGPT power users should notice improvements right away. The launch comes just days after the [launch of GPT-5.3 Instant](https://www.pcmag.com/news/openai-admits-chatgpt-is-cringe-releases-less-preachy-5-3-model "(opens in a new window)"), a more conversational model geared toward everyday users.
## Improved efficiency
OpenAI said that GPT-5.4 operates more efficiently than ever.
It [wrote that](https://openai.com/index/introducing-gpt-5-4/ "(opens in a new window)") it was the company's "most token-efficient reasoning model yet, using significantly fewer tokens to solve problems when compared to GPTâ5.2, translating to reduced token usage and faster speeds." Basically, that means GPT-5.4 can solve problems and deliver answers with fewer tokens.
## Better at doing real-world tasks
OpenAI said that the new model was far more capable of completing real-world tasks related to knowledge work.
Wrote OpenAI: "On [GDPvalâ ](https://openai.com/index/gdpval/ "(opens in a new window)"), which tests agentsâ abilities to produce well-specified knowledge work across 44 occupations, GPTâ5.4 achieves a new state of the art, matching or exceeding industry professionals in 83.0% of comparisons, compared to 70.9% for GPTâ5.2."
In other words, it's capable of doing a lot of people's jobs reasonably well.
## Improved accuracy
OpenAI claimed that GPT-5.4 cut down on mistakes. Compared with GPT-5.2, OpenAI said the model is 33 percent less likely to make false claims and its claims were 18 percent less likely to contain any errors, according to OpenAI.
More flexible approach to thinking
Instead of simply giving GPT-5.4 a prompt and letting it do its thing, you can course-correct the model as it goes.
"In ChatGPT, GPTâ5.4 Thinking can now provide an upfront plan of its thinking, so you can **adjust course mid-response** while itâs working**,** and arrive at a final output thatâs more closely aligned with what you need without additional turns."
## ChatGPT for Excel add-in
Enterprise customers can also use GPT-5.4 with a new OpenAI plugin, the [ChatGPT for Excel add-in](https://chatgpt.com/apps/spreadsheets/?openaicom-did=b0bffcf9-ef4d-49de-a3a7-af0163c8ba7d&openaicom_referred=true "(opens in a new window)"). per OpenAI, the latest models will be more capable of creating and analyzing spreadsheets.
## How to try GPT-5.4
As per usual, the new model starts rolling out today. It will be available in ChatGPT, Codex, and via the API. For this release, you'll need a paid ChatGPT subscription to use the new models, at least, for now.
You can [read OpenAI's full blog](https://openai.com/index/introducing-gpt-5-4/ "(opens in a new window)") post about the launch at the company's website.

The Trump administration declared Anthropic a 'supply-chain risk.' Now the CEO is fighting back.

The Department of Defense, known under the Trump administration as the Department of War, has just officially designated AI company Anthropic a "supply-chain risk" to national security. But Anthropic isn't buying it.
"We do not believe this action is legally sound, and we see no choice but to challenge it in court," Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei wrote in a [statement](https://www.anthropic.com/news/where-stand-department-war "(opens in a new window)") responding to the ongoing dispute.
The relationship between Anthropic and the U.S. military [deteriorated](https://mashable.com/article/anthropic-trump-pentagon) last week, after the AI company won a \$200 million contact from the federal government â but sought guarantees that its technology would not be used for surveillance, or weapons that can fire without humans in the loop.
The U.S. government would not agree to Anthropic's terms and threatened to designate the company a supply-chain risk, which it has now done. Trump also issued an executive order that tells every federal agency to stop using Anthropic's AI.
Amodei apologized for the leak of an internal memo, and confirmed [recent reports](https://mashable.com/article/anthropic-us-military-reenter-negotiations-for-claude-ai-models) that Anthropic and the Department of Defense have re-entered negotiations.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was [forced](https://mashable.com/article/openai-dept-of-war-deal-sam-altman-update-mass-surveillance) to address the deal after receiving significant blowback from users.
As the [*Wall Street Journal*](https://www.wsj.com/livecoverage/iran-strikes-2026/card/u-s-strikes-in-middle-east-use-anthropic-hours-after-trump-ban-ozNO0iClZpfpL7K7ElJ2?gaa_at=eafs&gaa_n=AWEtsqfWmHgc6GAYtxgfw2JoxmZXZ0sBOfRYvmGS3ZqxBBWUQP1_sD6Hu8WkjH7YQEQ%3D&gaa_ts=69a73db9&gaa_sig=tv9ryhXav4JevyCY_WcIJXkIPJ3uos3x_s2Mpa9rQVthDZHQ-pZz85dBcfKR55OHeBQtTxheBF4aQEOG9pDdiA%3D%3D "(opens in a new window)") previously reported, the U.S. military has already used Anthropic's Claude models to aid in carrying out strikes in Iran.

Developers can now officially integrate AI agents into Google Workspace.

[OpenClaw](https://mashable.com/article/what-is-clawdbot-how-to-try) has taken the AI industry by storm over the past few months, inspiring a new AI term for personal AI agents â [claws](https://mashable.com/article/what-are-claws-ai-clawdbot-openclaw).
Google published the [Google Workspace CLI on Github](https://github.com/googleworkspace/cli "(opens in a new window)") just days ago alongside specific documentation on how to integrate OpenClaw.
Last month, OpenAI [hired](https://mashable.com/article/openclaw-founder-peter-steinberger-joins-openai) OpenClaw's founder Peter Steinberger, who joined the company with a goal "to build an agent that even my mum can use."

The latest model from OpenAI comes just days after the company launched GPT-5.3 Instant.
