has made some controversial decisions related to its flagship search engine in recent years, but this one will probably be pretty popular.
The company announced in a
developer note
(via
9to5google
) that it will start punishing websites that hijack users' back buttons in their web browsers.
In case you're not familiar with this phenomenon, sometimes you'll click a link on Google and realize it's not what you wanted. When you click the back button, instead of being taken back to Google, you'll be taken to some other part of the website, or an ad, or something else you didn't want to see. This practice is also known as "history manipulation," according to our colleagues at
Lifehacker
.
"We believe that the user experience comes first. Back button hijacking interferes with the browser's functionality, breaks the expected user journey, and results in user frustration," Google
wrote in an update
to its spam policy explaining the decision.

I have definitely encountered this phenomenon over the years, and clearly so have others, given that Google is doing something about it.
Anyway, as it is wont to do, Google will penalize sites that engage in this practice by limiting their visibility in search rankings beginning on June 15. It is now officially categorized as a "malicious practice" by the company.
"Pages that are engaging in back button hijacking may be subject to
manual spam actions
or automated demotions, which can impact the site's performance in Google Search results. To give site owners time to make any needed changes, we're publishing this policy two months in advance of enforcement on June 15, 2026," Google wrote.
A malicious practice is something that "[creates] a mismatch between user expectations and the actual outcome, leading to a negative and deceptive user experience, or compromised user security or privacy." As someone who has experienced back button hijacking, I would say it definitely fits the bill.
Google also had some blunt advice for sites and developers that use this practice: "You are expected to remove or disable it."

# How to set a song as your ringtone on iPhone

Tired of the preset ringtones on your iPhone and want to return the good old days of custom ringtones? We've got you covered.
With iOS 14 setting a song as your ringtone on iPhone is easier than ever before. It does involve a bit of work, though.
To set a song as your ringtone it needs to saved in your Files app or must be purchased and downloaded on your phone. You can't use songs that you just have saved on Apple Music or another streaming service such as Spotify.

The easiest way to do this is to pick out your favorite song and save it to files using an mp3 converter or buy it in the iTunes Store. Then you'll have to create a loop of that song in GarageBand and export it as a ringtone. Don't worry, the process is quite easy, and we'll talk you through the steps.
First, download the song you'd like and save it to your iPhone. The easiest way to do this is probably [by downloading the song you'd like from YouTube](https://mashable.com/article/how-to-convert-youtube-video-to-mp3), and converting that to an mp3. Click the link above if you need help with that.
Follow the steps below to set a song as your ringtone on iPhone.
## How to set a song as your ringtone on iPhone:
**Total Time**

**What You Need**
- iPhone
- GarageBand app
**Step 1:** Download [GarageBand](https://www.apple.com/ios/garageband/ "(opens in a new window)").
**Step 2:** Open GarageBand.
**Step 3:** Swipe to "AUDIO RECORDER" and select.

**Step 4:** Tap the gray lines in the upper left hand corner.

**Step 5:** Tap the blue metronome in the upper middle of the screen.
**Step 6:** Tap the gray loop in the upper right hand corner.

**Step 7:** Find the song you want to use as your ringtone in "Files" or "Music" at the top of the screen.
**Step 8:** Hold down on the song and drag it into the workspace.
**Step 9:** Tap the small gray plus arrow in the upper right hand corner.

**Step 10:** Change the section length from eight to thirty.
You want your section length to be thirty seconds because that is the length of a ringtone. Credit: screenshot: garageband
**Step 11:** Hold down on the song and tap "Trim" to customize the thirty seconds of the song you want to be your ringtone.
After selecting "Trim," drag the audio around to get your desired section. Credit: screenshot: garageband
**Step 12:** Tap the gray arrow in the upper left hand corner and select "My Songs."

**Step 14:** Hold down on your song and select "Share."

The company announced in a [developer note](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2026/04/back-button-hijacking "(opens in a new window)") (via [9to5google](https://9to5google.com/2026/04/13/google-search-back-button-hijacking/ "(opens in a new window)")) that it will start punishing websites that hijack users' back buttons in their web browsers.
In case you're not familiar with this phenomenon, sometimes you'll click a link on Google and realize it's not what you wanted. When you click the back button, instead of being taken back to Google, you'll be taken to some other part of the website, or an ad, or something else you didn't want to see. This practice is also known as "history manipulation," according to our colleagues at [Lifehacker](https://lifehacker.com/how-to-navigate-away-from-a-website-that-disabled-the-b-1849070714#:~:text=While%20the%20internet%20isn't,page%20you're%20already%20on. "(opens in a new window)").
"We believe that the user experience comes first. Back button hijacking interferes with the browser's functionality, breaks the expected user journey, and results in user frustration," Google [wrote in an update](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2026/04/back-button-hijacking "(opens in a new window)") to its spam policy explaining the decision.

I have definitely encountered this phenomenon over the years, and clearly so have others, given that Google is doing something about it.
Anyway, as it is wont to do, Google will penalize sites that engage in this practice by limiting their visibility in search rankings beginning on June 15. It is now officially categorized as a "malicious practice" by the company.
"Pages that are engaging in back button hijacking may be subject to [manual spam actions](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/9044175#back-button-hijacking&zippy=%2Cback-button-hijacking "(opens in a new window)") or automated demotions, which can impact the site's performance in Google Search results. To give site owners time to make any needed changes, we're publishing this policy two months in advance of enforcement on June 15, 2026," Google wrote.
A malicious practice is something that "\[creates\] a mismatch between user expectations and the actual outcome, leading to a negative and deceptive user experience, or compromised user security or privacy." As someone who has experienced back button hijacking, I would say it definitely fits the bill.
Google also had some blunt advice for sites and developers that use this practice: "You are expected to remove or disable it."
