| Boilerpipe Text | Lately Iāve been doing a lot of thinking around the concept of heritage. My grandmother passed away last year and she did leave me some things of value ā is that my heritage? Or does the biggest value come from things that you cannot buy? I always thought that at one point Iād inherit a company; I havenāt, after all. The zig-zags are gone, but I still feel that I very much āownā that heritage.
Missoni Spring/Summer 1991 campaign.
When Iām asked about growing up in fashion, I reply that more than strictly fashion, I grew up into an aesthetic: surrounded by a passion for all things beautiful, a passion for the arts of this world that spanned from fashion to design, from theatre to blooms. Combining them in surprising manners was the most fun part of the game, with point of view reigning over trends. Missoni just one of the possible outcomes.
Shot by Kenneth Anger.
My grandparents began creating elevated knitwear because they felt the urge to offer women a comfortable and laid-back alternative to formal attire. Likewise
Maccapani
springs out of the will of creating a wardrobe of functional, versatile garments that could follow the contemporary woman through her multi-tasking day. Had they lived in the 2020s, they might have come up with something other than the zig-zag, which was actually just one of the many creative expressions that ended up becoming iconic and then stuck to the brand. The universe that birthed their brand was much richer. Missoni is an aesthetic and, prior to that, a lifestyle: itās a big, inclusive family; itās a long, delicious Sunday lunch filled with laughter and philosophical discourse; itās a curious approach to collecting and researching ā and that might just be my true heritage.
My personal style has always been characterized by an unexpected mix of ready-to-wear and thrift, both in home and fashion. I feel that vintage adds individuality, whilst new designs make the composition fresh and not literal. Curation might be my most peculiar and strongest asset.
Proof that the mixing instinct started early.
Since the inception of Maccapani Iāve been photographing the collections with vintage accessories. Beginning to sell them through our collaboration with
eBay
was a first step in the direction of enriching the brandās world, as well as giving it a unique identity.
Villa Macca, SS26 presentation ā vintage and Maccapani sharing the same stage.
As the project progressed, I realized how meaningful it would be for us to have a space that visually encapsulated that, where it could be seen alongside the rest of my rich world, and the mission to create a proper space for Maccapani became a priority.
We finally found a suitable location ā not a prime shopping area, but a great residential one, where many of our ideal Lady Maccas live. Long and lean, it has three street windows, while still allowing us to keep part of our office in the back ā key, since we still donāt have the volumes that would justify a standalone store.
Maccapaniās new home: long, lean, and right where many Lady Maccas live.
My business partner Andrea doubles up as an architect, which has been fundamental, as we created the space with minimal spending for maximal effect. We all gave everything we had, and the fact that my mother is a compulsive thrifter came in very handy: from the display vetrine to the Antonia Campi for Ginori toilet, she already owned it all. Yet another happy coincidence is that just last year I had moved from a huge house into a more normal-sized one and amassed a storage of furniture in the process: the sofa, the chairs, the table are all on loan from me.
A space assembled from family pieces, borrowed furniture, and good timing.
The curtains made with Maccapani stock fabrics, the shelves courtesy of a friend who took over a warehouse, my grandmotherās hand-me-downs adding an elevated layer, the Murano chandelier by
Dana Arbib
as the only real purchase: we felt the need for a statement lighting element at the entrance and her designs embody a contemporary but beyond-trends aesthetic akin to Maccapani. Itās all very, very personal.
Stock fabrics for the curtains ā and a Murano chandelier by Dana Arbib.
It was sweat and tears, but we couldnāt be happier with the outcome. Maccapani next to a selection of niche, in-the-know Italian products, as well as a bi-monthly rotation of vertical vintage curation of objects and accessories. We will host other brands, but artists too, at times letting them take over the whole space.
Maccapani next to some in-the-know Italian gems: Iacobella bags, Merù Gioielli, Ragno essentials, and Laguna~B glasses.
Current vintage selection.
We aim to become a travel address, but also a local hang-out, with the living room area (and my mumās Gianfranco Frattini for Cassina stackable coffee tables) being center stage.
On Wednesdays weāll be open until 8pm, with aperitivo served by our friends at
Atto caffe
across the street: it inaugurated with us and, next to their cakes, theyāll be selling bespoke Moto Ts.
Atto across the street, where cakes occasionally share the counter with our
Moto Ts
.
