What an oddball. This has the same characters and some of the book’s plot sprinkled here and there, but it’s mostly original material, which seems to me like a strange choice considering the fact that I don’t think it would take that much nudging in a certain direction to turn
Catch-22
into a sitcom (assuming you axe the second half). A lot of the novel’s humor is very character-driven and there’s enough gags to pepper into a 30-minute time slot. This pilot happened to air around the exact same time the
MASH
sitcom was beginning its decade-long run, and continuing the parallels started with Nichols’ and Altman’s movies; the other show wrangled primarily no-names — whoever heard of this Alan Alda guy? Meanwhile, this one features upcoming American Graffiti star Richard Dreyfuss AND Fred from Scooby-Doo, and still ended up tanking. A fascinating little artifact.
if you can get over the whole basis of them doing Catch 22 as a sitcom, then Dreyfuss is kind of an incredible casting for Yoyo
I thought this was decently amusing. Everything I see calls it a tv movie but it’s definitely more of a short film or even more likely a pilot episode that was never picked up. That’s a bit unfortunate because I definitely think it could have been something pretty fun. That being said if it did become a show I’m not sure where Richard Dreyfus’s career would be and would Frank Welker still be the voice of Fred in Scooby Doo.
Speaking of Frank Welker he was definitely my favorite part of this. He was also a fun way of actually showing what they meant by Catch 22. Most of the other actors were pretty solid for this sort of comedy…
It's meh.
All evidence of this should be burned.
goofy as hell.... I wish this was made into a show
This was probably objectively bad but it was very endearing. to me
Just... bad.
We would truly be living in the best timeline if this never made it to production, but it's still a good sign that a full season was never made.
Whacky, but thought inspiring.
One of the best Orson Welles performances too. |
