[I can handle the truth.](https://letterboxd.com/film/bunohan-return-to-murder/)* A film like Bunohan doesn't come often in this land. It comes off like a gritty kampung crime flick. To most, it seems unnecessary. Why the meandering pace? Why do the spliced hallucinatory sequences feel like they come out of nowhere? Why do the characters speak like Kelantanese mumblecore? But what I find is profound about the film's world is that it knows it's a bleak world. Director Dain Said said himself that he wanted to show his lost hope in the local cinema. The Tok Dalang (Shadow Pupeeter) in my humble opinion, is a representation of what's left of our pure artists. There are some very nice nature recordings. Additionally, coffee is being drunken, herbal tea cooked on open fire, argued with the old father, digged in graves to find the mother´s bones and then, fought again. You can see the incredible setting behind the rough edges, but it seems like it was just filmed with the wrong equipment. Or maybe I had a bad copy, but it didn't seem like it--none of the usual hallmarks were there. The plot seemed convoluted and brutal, but not uninteresting. I even have a DVD of it. But there's nothing like the "Leaving Soon" label on netflix that really kicked everything into gear. I love this movie. I think a lot of people assume it's going to be a typical action-packed flick what with it being literally called "Murder". But it's more of an arthouse movie with some action scenes. The action serves the plot, or at least, represents the setting, but it's not the main driver. Honestly, what the hell is going on in Kelantan?
