NEW BLOOMFIELD —
SpaceX safely returned four astronauts Sunday from the International Space Station.
NASA astronauts Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover and Shannon Walker, along with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Soichi Noguchi, splashed down off the coast of Panama City, Florida.
They immediately flew back to Houston, where they reunited with their family members. It was the first splashdown in darkness since the Apollo 8 moonshot.
The crew discussed their historic mission on Thursday.
Hopkins is a School of the Osage High School graduate.
He said the mission went like clockwork and the astronauts accomplished all of their goals.
"There were a lot of significant moments. The launch itself was significant because it was the first time we had a full crew onboard the commercial vehicle and taking us up to seven people on the International Space Station, that was a huge moment," Hopkins said. "And then I've got to say splashing down and having a successful end to the mission was a huge moment as well."
The mission was NASA's first long-duration mission at the International Space Station.
During the mission, the astronauts relocated the spacecraft from one port to another to make room for the SpaceX Crew 2 astronauts, who launched on April 23.
"One that sticks out to me was the port relocation. It was extremely impressive to me at how smoothly that port relocation went when we took Resilience and we undocked from the forward docking port and we moved around to the
zenith docking port," Hopkins said.
With multiple vehicles in the upcoming years, Hopkins said this process will be important.
During the mission, the astronauts completed spacewalks, grew radishes, tested a new system to remove heat from space suits and completed upgrades to the space station's power system.
Hopkins said the views from outer space were remarkable.
It just took my breath away. Because right there in my face is the Milky Way and you're just seeing all these amazing stars and you can see the earth just kind of glowing in the background and you can see this thin layer of the atmosphere glowing in the background as well |

NEW BLOOMFIELD — SpaceX safely returned four astronauts Sunday from the International Space Station.
It was extremely impressive to me at how smoothly that port relocation went when we took Resilience and we undocked from the forward docking port and we moved around to thezenith docking port," Hopkins said.
