Welcome! This is the third in several posts on cards that evoke the season of Spring in the Gaian Tarot and the Herbcrafter’s Tarot. Dear Ones, I saw a post on Instagram the other day with two slides. One said “I might never see the future I believe in, but I’m still gonna fight for it,” and the other said “I am happy to plant trees that I will never sit under.” I smiled at the synchronicity, as this message is exactly what the Gaian Tarot Seven of Earth is all about. In a world where a president can declare an unauthorized war in the Middle East for a dubious reason and it feels like a repeat of 2003 — only worse — it’s good to remember that every true, honorable, generous action we take will provide shelter, sustenance, and hope for generations yet to come. Images by Tricia Robinson, @triciarobinsonillustration I’ve been grappling with a head cold this past week as Winter slowly makes way for Spring, giving us days of brilliant sunshine interspersed with days of rain. I’m still living at my friend’s house where she spent hours last week out in her garden, clearing away debris, attending to seedlings, and preparing the soil. She would come back inside radiant, full of joy, even as we discussed the latest headlines and news stories. It feels like an act of resistance and rebellion to prepare for a good future while the world is burning. My interpretation of the Seven of Earth is different from the familiar Rider-Waite-Smith 7 of Pentacles, which shows a young man leaning on his hoe, looking at pentacles (in the place of pumpkins, perhaps) in the process of ripening. He’s evaluating their progress and wondering how long it will be until the harvest. I often think of this card as the eight-months-pregnant card. You’re almost there, but not quite. Just when will the harvest be ready? It’s a reminder that Mother Earth is not on our timeline … we are on hers, as an organic farmer friend of mine used to say. The harvest will come in its own good time. In my version of this card, I show a woman transplanting a cedar sapling instead of waiting for the harvest. I shifted the focus from harvest to planting partly because the Sevens in the Gaian Tarot all express the qualities of initiation, inner work, focusing on a goal. Yet the underlying idea — of waiting, of preparing for a harvest on its own timeline — remains the same. Just as the pumpkin harvest will feed the farmer’s family, so will the cedar trees eventually rise up to shade the streams that nurture salmon runs, giving life to entire communities.
