Required Flight Ratings
Airline Pilots must have a valid Commercial Pilot Certificate, Instrument Rating and Airline Transport Pilot Certificate to be Pilot in Command. You must have a minimum of 1,500 hours of flight time, be over the age of 23 and be able to pass a
1st Class Medical exam
. You can receive your Commercial Pilot Certificate at 18, Restricted ATP at 21 and your ATP certificate at 23.
Education
Most Major Commercial Airlines require a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university along with the flight ratings listed above.
Vision
Airline Pilots must have 20/20 vision. You can use corrective glasses or contacts to pass this requirement. If you are color-blind, you can consult an Aero Medical Examiner for more information.
Background Checks
Background checks are performed by some airlines; some have certain other pre-employment checks. Felonies will disqualify candidates. Misdemeanors and DUIs are handled at the discretion of the particular airline.
To qualify for the Coast—ACT Program, you must:
be be at least 17 years of age;
be able to pass a first class medical (
http://www.faa.gov/pilots/amelocator/
);
be a US citizen;
hold a current US passport;
be proficient in English;
No more than 2 moving violations on your driving record in the past 3 years;
hold a high school diploma (or GED); and
have or be enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program. An online bachelor’s degree is available through Indian Hills Community College. It is highly recommended you enroll in this program as a college degree is required to fly for any major airline in the country.

After five years, the pilot has to apply and receive a wavier indicating that he/she is eligible to enter into Canada. Any conviction that a pilot receives in his/her lifetime will require the same waiver authorization to be obtained. |
