Overview of Everest Base Camp Trek
Everest Base Camp Trek is the most popular trek in Nepal's 2,400km stretch of the Himalayas. It offers spectacular scenery, real Himalayan experiences, and the extraordinary culture of the Sherpa community while trekking the foothills of Mt. Everest. Experience the grandeur of Mount Everest [8,848m/29,029ft] up close, along with views of many other snow-capped mountains, on our all-inclusive Everest Base Camp Trek. The journey to Everest Base Camp got into the limelight when Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa climbed Everest for the first time in 1953, and ever since, this has been the preferred choice for beginner trekkers.
Trek to Everest Base Camp and Kalapathar on our 16-day itinerary, which has been carefully designed to ensure a well-paced walk, proper acclimatization, exploring the less trodden route via Phortse and covering all the major highlights of the Everest region. Our itinerary takes a unique approach through Phortse on the way up, offering a richer experience of the region and avoiding the repetition of trekking the same trail both ways. Our EBC Trek is a fully guided and supported trek with lodge-based accommodation through out the trip.
The Mount Everest Base Camp trail goes over 5,000m/16,400ft for the last few days before reaching Everest Base Camp, but the trek isn’t as strenuous as imagined and does not require prior trekking experience while promising a fulfilling journey. Adding to the fun-filled Everest base camp trekking tour, the panoramic views of the Himalayas, monasteries, culture, and the mountain flight to Lukla are a few of the highlights of this trip.

Depending on your travel month, your flight to Lukla will depart either from Kathmandu or Ramechap Airport. During the high season, flights to Lukla are typically operated from Ramechap, which is 130 km east of Kathmandu and requires a 4 to 5-hour drive. If your flight departs from Ramechap, you will need to wake up around 1:00 a.m. to begin the drive, and the flight itself takes only 15 minutes.
Once in Lukla, you will immediately be impressed by the towering peaks surrounding the village, giving you a glimpse of what’s to come. After meeting your crew, you’ll begin your hike up the Dudh Koshi Valley for the trek to Phakding on a well-marked trail, making your way to Phakding for the night.
Tentative dates for Ramechap airport operations for Lukla flights are from March 25 to May and from September 20 to November. During other months, flights will depart from Kathmandu Airport. Read more on

Familiar peaks such as Lingtren, Khumbutse, and Changtse tower to the east, with Everest emerging majestically between its west shoulder crest and Nuptse. We’ll spend some time at the top, snapping as many pictures as possible, before returning to Gorekshep for breakfast.

Itinerary Disclaimer:
Your safety is of imperative concern while traveling with Highland Expeditions. Please take care to note that your guide/leader has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the itinerary if it is deemed necessary due to your safety concerns. Every effort will be made to keep to the above itinerary; however, since this adventure entails traveling in remote mountainous regions, we cannot guarantee that we will not deviate from it. Weather, the health condition of a group member, unexpected natural disasters, etc., can all contribute to changes in the itinerary. The trek guide/leader will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but please be prepared to be flexible if required.
Lukla Flight:
Plane flights in Nepal, especially those to Lukla, are generally dependent on weather conditions. These flights operate under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), which require clear weather. If the weather is poor, all flights for the day will be canceled. In the event of a flight cancellation, we will try to arrange a helicopter flight, as helicopters can sometimes operate in conditions where planes cannot. However, you will be responsible for the additional costs, which can range from $300 to $500 or more, depending on factors such as the number of people sharing the flight, availability, and demand. This extra amount is after crediting your plane fare. If delays continue for several days and neither a helicopter nor a plane flight is an option, we will collectively decide how to proceed. This is particularly important if delays occur before the trek, as the original itinerary may no longer be feasible. Your guide will assist you throughout this process, and we expect your understanding and cooperation. Therefore, it is important to include contingency days in Kathmandu after the trek to account for potential delays. If there are no cancellations and flights operate as scheduled, you can use the extra days for sightseeing in and around the Kathmandu Valley.

Yes,
the Everest Base Camp trek is for Beginners, but trekkers should be physically and mentally prepared to start the trek. Even though the trek is quite demanding and takes you to the high altitudes of the Himalayas, a novice trekker with a good fitness level and proper acclimatization plan can smoothly complete it. One of the major reasons why the trek is achievable for first-time trekkers is that it involves no technical climbing sections or requires any specialized skills. Thus, just a good level of fitness and endurance are enough for beginners to complete the trek.
The trek to Everest Base Camp includes two separate days of acclimatization, which helps beginners adjust to the changed atmosphere and surroundings at high altitudes. Likewise, an experienced licensed guide will accompany them, providing assistance and support throughout the trek and helping them achieve the trek even for beginners. All in all, a beginner can complete the Everest Base Camp Rrek and fulfill their dream of conquering a height, but they must fit, train properly, be aware of altitude sickness, pack the right gear, and plan accordingly.
The Everest Base Camp trek is suitable for you if you are physically fit and okay with trekking for
14-16 days
in a rugged terrain for 5-6 hours daily. Although the trek is moderately challenging, having previous trekking experience is advantageous as trekkers with reasonable fitness levels can complete the trek fluently without trekking experience.
The trek to Everest Base Camp is suitable if you can walk on varied terrain, including steep climbs, rocky paths, and suspension bridges. Likewise, those who can cope with changing surroundings and unpredictable weather should definitely go for that trek. However, our itinerary is carefully crafted, adding a proper acclimatization day and letting trekkers adapt well to the altitude. All in all, the trek is suitable for adventure seekers looking for an iconic journey through a world-renowned destination.
The crowds for the Everest Base Camp trek depend significantly on the season. The trail is highly crowded in peak season, including Spring and Autumn, and relatively less crowded during Summer and Winter. The EBC trail is highly crowded in peak season because it is the major trekking route for popular expeditions like
Mount Everest, Mount Ama Dablam, Lobuche Peak, and Mera Peak
. Thus, trekkers going on the EBC trek in the high season can expect to witness the maximum flow of travelers.
The clear skies, comfortable temperature, stable weather, and ideal trekking conditions attract thousands of adventure seekers to the top of the world to experience its majesty, making the trail crowded in spring and autumn.
Due to the trafficked trails, the tea houses will also be busy, leading to problems finding a lodging point during the trek; thus, it is highly recommended to book in advance if you are planning to trek EBC in peak time. Besides, for trekkers looking for a less crowded time, we advise them to trek in shoulder seasons (April- May and November), which come with a good balance between fewer crowds and favorable weather conditions.
The Everest Base Camp trek costs
USD 1,889 per person.
This is an all-inclusive price that covers all expenses and logistics required for the trek. The cost covers lodging in Kathmandu and throughout the trek, meals, permits, domestic flights, a trekking guide, a porter, all ground transportation, and some refundable trekking gear. This all-inclusive cost ensures trekkers are worry-free and only focus on the journey rather than the logistics.
In addition, a group discount is also available for the trek; thus, if you are in a larger group, feel free to contact us for trip cost and availability. Still, if you are on a private trip and want a fully customized trip, it is also possible, but it costs extra. Additionally, the upgrade of accommodation, transportation, and itinerary make changes in the overall cost of the trip to Everest Base Camp.
Whether you are trekking solo or traveling in a group, a guide makes your journey smoother, safer, and more thrilling. A guide is trained and helps trekkers in many ways, from guiding through the varied topography of the Everest region to avoiding dangerous zones. In the same vein, a guide will help monitor and alert trekkers to severe conditions like altitude sickness.
Besides helping you during the trek, guides also deliver information on the culture of the Khumbu valley.
Guides describe the area’s tales and history, making the trek culturally attractive. The guide also helps you plan your logistics, like food, accommodation, permits, and all the equipment you require for the trek, thereby allowing the trekkers a hassle-free experience.

## Overview of Everest Base Camp Trek
Everest Base Camp Trek is the most popular trek in Nepal's 2,400km stretch of the Himalayas. It offers spectacular scenery, real Himalayan experiences, and the extraordinary culture of the Sherpa community while trekking the foothills of Mt. Everest. Experience the grandeur of Mount Everest \[8,848m/29,029ft\] up close, along with views of many other snow-capped mountains, on our all-inclusive Everest Base Camp Trek.
## All-Inclusive Everest Base Camp Trek

### Fly to Lukla and trek to Phakding
Read more on [Ramechap to Lukla Flights](https://highlandexpeditions.com/ramechap-to-lukla-flights/)

Ahead of Monjo is the entry to the Sagarmatha National Park, which is planned to look after and preserve the fragile mountain environment.

**Itinerary Disclaimer:** Your safety is of imperative concern while traveling with Highland Expeditions.

**Lukla Flight:** Plane flights in Nepal, especially those to Lukla, are generally dependent on weather conditions. These flights operate under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), which require clear weather. If the weather is poor, all flights for the day will be canceled. In the event of a flight cancellation, we will try to arrange a helicopter flight, as helicopters can sometimes operate in conditions where planes cannot. However, you will be responsible for the additional costs, which can range from \$300 to \$500 or more, depending on factors such as the number of people sharing the flight, availability, and demand.

## Essential Information about Everest Base Camp Trek
Collapse All
### Is the Everest Base Camp Trek for Beginners?
**Yes,** the Everest Base Camp trek is for Beginners, but trekkers should be physically and mentally prepared to start the trek.
### Is the EBC Trek Suitable for You?
The Everest Base Camp trek is suitable for you if you are physically fit and okay with trekking for **14-16 days** in a rugged terrain for 5-6 hours daily.
### How crowded is the EBC trail?
The crowds for the Everest Base Camp trek depend significantly on the season. The trail is highly crowded in peak season, including Spring and Autumn, and relatively less crowded during Summer and Winter. The EBC trail is highly crowded in peak season because it is the major trekking route for popular expeditions like **Mount Everest, Mount Ama Dablam, Lobuche Peak, and Mera Peak**. Thus, trekkers going on the EBC trek in the high season can expect to witness the maximum flow of travelers.
*The clear skies, comfortable temperature, stable weather, and ideal trekking conditions attract thousands of adventure seekers to the top of the world to experience its majesty, making the trail crowded in spring and autumn.* Due to the trafficked trails, the tea houses will also be busy, leading to problems finding a lodging point during the trek; thus, it is highly recommended to book in advance if you are planning to trek EBC in peak time. Besides, for trekkers looking for a less crowded time, we advise them to trek in shoulder seasons (April- May and November), which come with a good balance between fewer crowds and favorable weather conditions.
### Everest Base Camp Trek Cost
The Everest Base Camp trek costs **USD 1,889 per person.** This is an all-inclusive price that covers all expenses and logistics required for the trek.
### Guide for the Everest Base Camp Trek
Whether you are trekking solo or traveling in a group, a guide makes your journey smoother, safer, and more thrilling. A guide is trained and helps trekkers in many ways, from guiding through the varied topography of the Everest region to avoiding dangerous zones. In the same vein, a guide will help monitor and alert trekkers to severe conditions like altitude sickness.
*Besides helping you during the trek, guides also deliver information on the culture of the Khumbu valley.* Guides describe the area’s tales and history, making the trek culturally attractive. The guide also helps you plan your logistics, like food, accommodation, permits, and all the equipment you require for the trek, thereby allowing the trekkers a hassle-free experience.

## FAQs About Everest Base Camp Trek
Expand All
### Accommodation
#### Where do we stay in Kathmandu?
In Kathmandu, we stay at Kathmandu Guest House, a well-known hotel where many celebrities like the Beatles, Ricky Martin, Jeremy Irons, and others have stayed. Centrally located in Thamel, the hotel also boasts a beautiful garden where you can relax and enjoy the greenery. Breakfast will be provided in the hotel, and your accommodation will be on a twin-sharing basis. If you would like to have a single room, then a single room is available at an additional cost. Read the single supplement section for more details
#### Where do we stay on the trek?
During the trek, you will stay in standard teahouses or lodges run by local people. The lodges on the Everest Base Camp Trek are clean, cozy, and comfortable. Higher up, the rooms are basic, usually just a bed with a pillow and blankets, but they offer wonderful views and are sufficient for a night’s rest.
All teahouses and lodges have a warm dining area, usually heated by a fireplace, where we spend most of our time.
For five nights in Phakding, Namche, Monjo, and Lukla, you will have a room with a private bathroom. At higher elevations, bathrooms are shared.
Rooms are not heated or insulated. Some lodges are very basic, so a sense of adventure is necessary.
#### Single Supplement
A single supplement will be charged if someone wishes to have their own room. Especially when traveling in a group, we will always pair you with someone of the same sex and similar age to share the room with. A Single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room, and it will cost USD 150 per person. However, please note that a single room is only available in Kathmandu and on the trek for 5 nights (Phakding, Namche, Monjo, and Lukla). In other places, especially higher above, there is a limited amount of lodging available, and during busy months it’s generally impossible to arrange private rooms. This is the case even if you’re willing to pay extra, since the lodge owners will not give out a private room if it means someone else goes without a room.
### Meals & Drinking Water
#### Are meals included on this trip?
Yes, meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) are included on our Everest Base Camp Trek and are served at teahouses/lodges along the trail. The Teahouses/lodges where we stay also cater to our meals and they offer a wide variety of Nepali and Western dishes. Meals worth USD 600-700 are included on this trip.
In Kathmandu, only breakfast is provided, giving you the flexibility to choose where and what to eat for lunch and dinner.
#### What are the food choices on the trek?
Due to the remote location and lack of road and transportation accessibility, the food options during the Everest Base Camp trek are less comprehensive. Still, the region offers traditional Nepali cuisine, Tibetan cuisine, and international dishes. Here are some options for trekkers during the Everest Base Camp trek:
**Breakfast:** Bread, Eggs, Pancakes, Porridges, Oatmeal, Cornflakes, Tibetan bread or Chapati, Tea/coffee
**Lunch and Dinner:** Dal Bhat, Noodles, Veg / Potato Dumplings (Momo), Pizza, Burgers, Sandwiches, Pasta, Spaghetti, Macaroni, Tibetan/Sherpa stew, Rice with curries, Potatoes (Fries, Chips), Soup, Chapati etc.
**Note:** While the lodges offer a decent variety of meals, protein options are limited, and the diet is mainly carbohydrate-based. We recommend bringing protein bars and some comfort foods.
#### Do you accommodate dietary requirements or food allergies?
Yes, we can accommodate dietary requirements and food allergies, including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free meals. Please inform us at the time of booking, and we will ensure your guide is aware and can arrange suitable meals.
We also recommend bringing additional food, especially gluten-free options, as choices on the trail may be limited. Read more: <https://highlandexpeditions.com/trekking-in-nepal-with-celiac-gluten-free-in-nepal/>
#### Will drinking water be provided on the trek?
Yes, we provide hot boiled water for drinking on the trek to minimize the use of single plastic bottles. Please bring a water bottle that can hold hot water, such as a Nalgene bottle. During meal times, we will refill your bottle with hot water. For added safety, you may also use water purification tablets or filtration devices.
#### Is there any dietary advisory?
Meat is available at lodges during the trek, but we recommend choosing vegetarian meals once you’re above Namche. Meat in higher villages is often carried up from lower elevations and stored for extended periods without refrigeration, which can increase the risk of foodborne illness. Eating vegetarian food is generally the safer and healthier option at altitude.
### Difficulty & Prerequisites
#### How difficult is Everest Base Camp Trek?
Everest Base Camp (EBC) Trek is considered challenging in terms of difficulty due to the high altitude, reaching a maximum of 5,364m (17,600ft), and the long trekking days, averaging 6–8 hours of walking daily.
In spite of its challenging nature, the trek is achievable with proper planning and fitness level, making it a challenging but rewarding journey. The major factors that add to the difficulty of the Everest Base Camp trek are:
**High Altitude**
The high altitude is the major aspect that adds to the difficulty of the Mount Everest Base Camp trek. The trek takes trekkers up to an elevation of 5,644m at Kalapatthar, where the risk of altitude-related issues is high due to the thinner air pressure. However, the problem of high altitude is not when you reach the Kalapatthar or Everest Base Camp; it is when you land at Lukla Airport, which stands at an altitude of 2,860m. Thus, trekkers should have knowledge about altitude sickness and learn about acclimatization techniques before undertaking the trip.
**Longer Duration**
The Mount Everest Base Camp journey is somehow longer, covering a 65km distance on a one-way and 130km round trip. The trek demands 12 to 14 days to complete, and each day involves walking a minimum of 6 hours. Walking for such a long duration while gaining elevation each day will be difficult for those who have never been part of any physical excursion. Thus, trekkers must train properly to begin the trip.
**Varied Terrain**
Another factor that adds to the challenges of the **Mt. Everest Base Camp trek** is the varied terrain that spreads across the area of Sagarmatha National Park. The terrain involves forested areas of pine, bamboo, rhododendrons, and others, which can be slippery sometimes. Likewise, it involves crossing suspension bridges multiple times. Additionally, the combination of glacial paths, stark moraines, and several uphill and downhill sections adds to the challenges of the trek, demanding good cardiovascular and leg strength.
**Unpredictable Weather**
**The weather of mountain regions, including Everest, is notoriously unpredictable.** The air thins rapidly at high altitudes, leading to colder temperatures and less oxygen, causing rapid weather changes. String winds and jet storms can occur anytime, making trekking difficult. Thus, it is recommended that you check the weather forecast before starting the trip.
#### What is the maximum elevation gained on EBC Trek?
The highest point of the trek is 5,364m (17,600ft) at Everest Base Camp. If you hike to Kala Patthar, you will reach 5,545m (18,192ft). The highest overnight stay is at Gorak Shep (5,161m/16,929ft), the last stop before Everest Base Camp.
#### Do I need previous experience to do Everest Base Camp Trek?
Previous trekking experience is not necessary to take part in the Everest Base Camp Trek, but you should be physically fit and able to walk long hours in high-altitude conditions. Previous hiking experience is beneficial but not mandatory. The trek involves walking 6–7 hours daily, starting from 2,800m (9,184ft) at Lukla and gradually ascending to 5,364m/17,600ft
#### How do i prepare for the Everest Base Camp Trek?
To prepare for the Everest Base Camp trek, trekkers should focus on building cardio endurance, strength, acclimatization, and mental preparation. Likewise, choosing a reputable trekking agency and packing appropriately is also part of the preparation for the Everest region trek. Additionally, aerobic conditioning and elevation training are other important preparations for the trek to EBC.
**Cardio endurance**
- Be involved in activities like running, cycling, or brisk walking for 30-50 minutes 3-5 times a week.
- Hike in a hilly or mountainous terrain with a weighted backpack.
**Strength**

- Engage in plans, Russian twists, and leg raises.
**Acclimatization**

**Packing appropriately**
- Pack in layers from the base layer to the insulation layer and waterproof layer.
- Invest in high-quality footwear and pack personal accessories.
**Aerobic conditioning**
- Focus on brisk walking or jogging to improve stamina.
- Involve swimming for lung capacity.
**Elevation training**

- Use a hypoxic mask to simulate low-oxygen environments.
For more training guidance, please check: <https://highlandexpeditions.com/how-to-train-for-high-altitude-treks-and-climbs/>
#### Are there any age restrictions?
The minimum age to join this trek with Highland Expeditions is 16. Trekkers under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. There is no upper age limit, and we have successfully guided trekkers up to 78 years old to Everest Base Camp.
### Guide and Staff
#### Who will lead the trip?
Your trek will be led by an experienced, English-speaking local guide who is fully trained in first aid and high-altitude trekking. All our guides work with us full-time; we do not outsource. This ensures consistency, deep local knowledge, and familiarity with our routes, camps, and logistics. Our guides are selected for their technical skills, leadership, and ability to provide personalized support. They monitor your health and pace, assist with acclimatization, and handle any challenges that arise, allowing you to focus on enjoying the trek safely and comfortably.
#### What is the staff to client ratio?
For every group, we provide one lead guide, one assistant guide for every four trekkers, and one porter for every two trekkers. This high staff-to-client ratio ensures you receive personalized attention while enjoying the company of like-minded travelers.
#### Are the guides medically trained?
Yes, our guides receive comprehensive first-aid training and refresh their skills every two years to ensure they stay up to date with best practices. Their training covers common high-altitude illnesses such as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE), and High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), as well as injuries and medical emergencies that can occur on the trail. Guides are trained to assess symptoms, provide immediate care, administer oxygen if needed, and manage evacuation procedures. This ensures your safety throughout the trek and that any health issues are addressed promptly and effectively.
### Trial Information
#### How are the trails on the trek?
The trails on the Everest Base Camp Trek are generally well-defined, following clear paths and yak trails. Some sections are narrow with slopes on one side, and the final two days involve uneven, rocky terrain near the Khumbu Glacier. No technical climbing is required.
#### Are there any cliffs or exposed ridges on the trek?
The Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek does not involve extreme cliffs or highly exposed ridges like technical mountaineering routes, but there are some sections where the trail follows steep slopes with drop-offs but they are manageable with caution as the path is wide and well trodden.
#### Is there a risk of rockfall/landslides etc?
The Everest Base Camp trek has a very low risk of rockfall or landslides, especially in the pre- and post-monsoon seasons. Some areas, like Thukla Pass and Khumbu Glacier, have loose rocks, but incidents are rare. Sticking to established trails and trekking early in the day further minimizes any risk.
#### Does this trek include a steep climb?
Yes, there are some steep sections, especially while ascending Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and the final approach to Kala Patthar. However, these climbs are gradual and manageable with proper acclimatization.
#### Is the Everest Base Camp Trek dangerous?
The Everest Base Camp Trek is generally safe for physically fit trekkers who follow proper acclimatization and guidance. The main risks are altitude sickness, slips on uneven or rocky trails, and harsh weather. With careful pacing, a knowledgeable guide, and adherence to safety precautions, the trek is manageable and rewarding.
### Itinerary and Typical Day
#### How different is your Everest Base Camp Trek Itinerary?
Our Everest Base Camp Trek itinerary has been carefully devised to ensure a well-paced walk, proper acclimatization, and to explore the less-trodden route via Phortse. Our Itinerary takes a unique approach through Phortse on the way up, offering a richer experience of the region and avoiding the repetition of trekking the same trail both ways.
#### How do you ensure acclimatization on the trek?
To ensure proper acclimatization during the Everest Base Camp trek, we spend two nights in Namche and two nights in Dingboche. These extended stays allow your body to gradually adjust to the higher altitudes and reduce the risk of altitude-related illnesses. During these days, we follow the proven “climb high, sleep low” principle. This means you ascend to a higher elevation during the day for a short hike or acclimatization walk, then return to a lower altitude to sleep. This approach helps your body adapt to thinner air, improving oxygen efficiency and minimizing symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). These carefully planned acclimatization stops are key to ensuring a safer and more enjoyable trek as you continue toward higher elevations.
#### What does a typical day on the trek look like?
A typical day on the trek starts with a wake-up around 6:00 am. Before breakfast, you should pack your duffel bag, which the porter will load while you enjoy your meal. After a hearty breakfast, we begin the day’s walk at around 08:00am. We usually stop for lunch after 3–4 hours of trekking. The afternoon walk is generally shorter, allowing us to reach our destination in time for afternoon tea. The rest of the afternoon is free. You can explore the village, wash your clothes, or relax with a book. On some days, we arrive at our destination by lunchtime, giving you the entire afternoon to rest or explore at leisure.
#### What is the average walking hour each day?
You should expect to walk about 6–7 hours each day on the Everest Base Camp Trek. The day we trek to Everest Base Camp from Lobuche and return to Gorakshep is longer, around 10–12 hours. Similarly, the day we hike to Kalapathar in the morning and descend to Pheriche takes approximately 10 hours. On all other days, the trek involves 6–7 hours of walking on average at a steady pace.
#### Do the guides dictate the walking pace?
Yes, the assistant guide sets the walking pace on the trek and the lead guide usually stays at the back to monitor the group and ensure everyone is coping welll. Depending on the group size, there will be assistant guides to set the pace and provide assistance for the team. The pace is slow and steady, suitable for most trekkers, allowing proper acclimatization and rest while ensuring safety and comfort throughout the trek.
For a small team of 1–3 trekkers, the lead guide will set the pace.
#### What If i am the slowest in the group?
The pace set by the assistant guide suits most trekkers. If someone is significantly slower, they will walk with an assistant guide separately, while the main group continues at a steady pace. This ensures everyone can trek safely and comfortably at their own speed.
### Facilities on the trek
#### Is there electricity available for charging?
Charging facilities are available at all the places on this trek. However, charging devices will incur additional costs. Additional costs typically range from Nepalese Rupees 800–1,500, depending on the device and location. At higher elevations, most lodges rely on solar power, so daytime charging may not always be possible, as they sometimes conserve energy for the evening.
#### Is there WIFI available on the trek?
Yes, Wi-Fi is available at most lodges along the Everest Base Camp Trek. You can purchase Wi-Fi cards directly at the lodges, with costs varying from Rupees 1000 to 12000. Speeds may be slower at higher elevations due to limited connectivity, and service can be intermittent during bad weather or peak usage times.
#### Are there showers available?
Yes, hot showers are available at the lodges along the trek. They are included up to Namche Bazaar. Above Namche, hot showers usually cost around NPR 500. For the last two nights in Lobuche and Gorak Shep, showering is not recommended due to the extreme cold. Wet wipes are a convenient alternative for staying fresh.
#### Can i buy snacks at the lodges?
All lodges also have small in-house shops or stores where you can buy essentials like bottled water, soft drinks, toilet paper, snacks, and energy bars. Prices tend to increase with altitude due to the effort required to transport goods, so it’s wise to bring some supplies from Kathmandu or stock up in lower villages like Namche.
#### Is there mobile phone coverage on the Everest Base Camp trek?
Cell phone coverage in the Everest region is generally fair, and internet access is available along much of the trek. You can buy a local SIM card in Kathmandu to stay connected; we recommend the NTC SIM for the best coverage on the Everest trek. Mobile network provides good internet for a few days during the trek, but at higher altitudes, the mobile network will no longer support internet access. ### Weather
#### When is the best time to do the Everest Base Camp Trek?
The best seasons to trek to the Everest base camp are Autumn (latter half of September till December) and Spring (latter half of March until mid-May). On both seasons, Mornings are usually clear, with clouds building up in the afternoon and disappearing at night. The given temperature may raise or lower with the change in weather factors: (Sunny, Snow, Rain etc.)
**Autumn/Fall:**
Slightly colder than Spring but presents clear views of the mountains. The mornings are clear, providingthe best mountain views, days are warmer and nighttime will get cold and frosty. The temperature during Autumn varies from the lowest -10 degrees Celsius at Gorekshep to warmest 25 degree Celsius at Lukla/Phakding.
**Spring:**
Another weather window for trekking in Nepal comes during the month of the latter March to May. The temperature will be relatively warmer during this period of time but still, nights will be cold and frosty at a higher elevation. Temperatures will drop considerably as you ascend higher every day. During the spring season, the base camp will be full of tents as Apr-May are preferred time to climb Mt. Everest.
#### What is the difference between trekking in Spring and Autumn?
The main difference between Spring and Autumn for trekking to Everest Base Camp lies in weather conditions and the overall atmosphere. Spring, being the pre-monsoon season, is warmer with temperatures ranging from about -5°C to 20°C. Mornings are usually clear, but clouds often form during the day, and light rainfall is common. This is also the main climbing season for Mount Everest, so the base camp is filled with expedition tents, creating a lively and busy environment.
Autumn, on the other hand, is the post-monsoon season. The rains clear the skies, offering more stable and clearer weather with excellent visibility. However, temperatures are colder than in Spring, usually ranging from -10°C to 15°C. Both seasons are considered the best for trekking, but Spring offers a warmer climate and a bustling base camp atmosphere, while Autumn provides clearer skies and quieter surroundings.
#### Is it possible to trek to Everest Base Camp in winter?
Yes, the Everest Base Camp trek is possible in winter. However, you need to be prepared for much colder conditions, with night temperatures dropping as low as -20°C and evenings being very cold. Daytime temperatures are usually pleasant, making the trek manageable during daylight hours. December and January are generally good months for winter trekking as the weather is stable, but heavy snowfall is possible in February, so that month is not recommended.
### Safety on Trek
#### How do you ensure safety during the Everest Base Camp Trek?
Safety is at the core of everything we do. Our itineraries are carefully designed to ensure gradual acclimatization and minimize risk at high altitude. Before each trek, we conduct a detailed risk assessment to identify and prepare for any potential challenges. On the trail, you’ll be led by experienced guides—some of the best in the industry—who are trained to handle high-altitude situations with professionalism and care. In addition, we carry our own oxygen bottle and comprehensive medical kit.
We also maintain a high staff-to-client ratio, ensuring personalized support throughout the trek, whether you’re part of a small private group or a larger fixed-departure trip. With decades of operational experience behind us, we have the resources and contingency plans in place for any situation. During the busy trekking seasons, our team is stationed in both Lukla and Kathmandu to assist swiftly with logistics or emergencies.
#### Do you carry your own oxygen bottles in case of emergencies?
**Yes, we carry our own supplementary oxygen systems on all treks and climbs.** Even if there is only one participant, we bring our own oxygen bottles to ensure safety. In case of emergencies, oxygen is provided to our clients at no extra cost. Many companies rely on lodge-supplied oxygen, which is often limited and can cost USD 150–200 per hour, but we make sure our team has immediate and reliable access whenever needed.
#### Do you carry first aid kit on the trek?
We carry a comprehensive medical kit that includes both standard first-aid and high-altitude medications, ensuring we’re prepared to manage common ailments and emergencies in the field.
#### Do you provide emergency evacuation support?
In case of emergencies, our team is available 24/7 to provide assistance with evacuation. We will coordinate with your insurance company and manage all rescue arrangements to ensure a timely and safe evacuation.
#### What medical support is available on the trek?
During the high season, health posts with doctors are stationed at Namche, Dingboche, and Pheriche. These posts provide first aid and immediate treatment for common trekking-related issues such as altitude sickness, minor injuries, and illnesses. They can stabilize patients and coordinate further care or evacuation if necessary.
### Flight and Airport
#### Will I need to drive to Ramechap Airport?
Depending on your travel dates, you may need to drive to Ramechap Airport to catch your flight to Lukla. During the high season—April, May, October, and November—flights to and from Lukla operate from Ramechap rather than Kathmandu. The drive from Kathmandu to Ramechap takes approximately 4 to 5 hours.
#### What happens in case of Lukla flight cancellations?
If the weather is poor, all flights to Lukla for the day may be canceled. In the event of a flight cancellation, there are two main options:
1. **Wait and try the next day:** If the flight is canceled, you will return to your hotel and attempt the flight the following day. Our itinerary is designed to accommodate such delays, so even if the flight is canceled for a day, the trek itself will remain unaffected, and your acclimatization schedule will not be compromised. Only the return itinerary may be adjusted to account for the delay, while the overall trekking plan stays the same.
2. **Take a helicopter flight:** Helicopters can sometimes operate when planes cannot. If you choose this option, you will be responsible for additional costs, typically ranging from \$300 to \$500 or more, depending on factors such as the number of people sharing the flight, availability, and demand. This cost is calculated after crediting your plane fare.
If delays continue for several days and neither a helicopter nor a plane is available, we will collectively decide on the best course of action. This is especially relevant if delays occur before the trek begins, as the original itinerary may no longer be feasible. Your guide will assist throughout this process, and your understanding and cooperation are essential.
For this reason, it is important to include contingency days in Kathmandu after the trek to accommodate potential delays. If flights operate as scheduled with no cancellations, these extra days can be used for sightseeing in and around the Kathmandu Valley.
#### Can i take helicopter flight instead of plane flight?
Yes, you can choose to take a helicopter flight from Kathmandu to Lukla or Lukla to Kathmandu instead of the plane flight. However, this option is available for private treks only.
### Baggage and Backpack
#### Do i need to carry my backpack?
You only need to carry a personal backpack with essential items for the day, such as water, valuables, rain gear, snacks, sunscreen, and other necessities. We recommend keeping your backpack weight around 5 kg for a more comfortable trekking experience.
#### What is the baggage allowance for the trek?
Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, we will provide you with a duffel bag for repacking your trekking gear. You will need to repack your trekking gear into the provided duffel bag. You are allowed to take up to 15 kg in a duffel bag, and the duffel bag will be carried by the porter. Each porter is assigned to carry up to two duffel bags.
#### Can I leave extra luggage in Kathmandu during the trek?
You can leave your luggage or any items you don’t need for the trek at your hotel in Kathmandu. After repacking your trekking gear into the duffel bag provided by us, the remaining luggage can be stored at the hotel at no additional cost.
#### What size backpack should I carry on the trek?
Since most of your gear will be carried by a porter and you only need to carry essential items for the day, a 35–40 liter backpack is ideal for comfort and convenience.
### Practical Info
#### What is Everest Base Camp Trek?
The Everest Base Camp Trek is among the most popular trekking adventures in the world; It takes trekkers to the base of the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest. Typically lasting 12-14 days, it starts with a flight to Lukla and involves trekking through Sherpa villages and Sagarmatha National Park, reaching Everest Base Camp at 5,364 meters.
#### Can I use the drone to capture footage along the trek to Everest Base Camp?
Using a drone on the Everest Base Camp trek is heavily regulated and often discouraged. You’ll need specific permits from the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, which are difficult to obtain and expensive. Additionally, many Sagarmatha National Park areas, including nearby monasteries and sensitive wildlife areas, have strict no-drone zones. Respecting local customs and minimizing disturbance is crucial, so flying might not be welcomed even with a permit.
#### What are the major Sherpas festivals I might experience during the Everest Trek?
During the Everest trek, you might encounter significant Sherpa festivals like Dumji, a celebration honoring Guru Rinpoche, usually held in June or July with masked dances and rituals. Losar, the Tibetan New Year, is another major festival, typically in February or March, featuring vibrant celebrations, prayers, and traditional performances.
#### What are the dos and don'ts when visiting Buddhist monasteries on the trail to EBC?
When visiting Buddhist monasteries on the EBC trail, it’s essential to show respect for local customs. Dos include removing shoes before entering prayer halls, walking clockwise around stupas and prayer wheels, and maintaining silence. Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Don’t touch religious artifacts or monks without permission, take photos inside prayer halls without asking, or point your feet towards altars or monks, which is considered disrespectful.
#### How cold does it get at night in the higher elevation of Everest Base Camp trail?
At higher elevations on the Everest Base Camp trail, particularly at night, temperatures can plummet significantly. At Everest Base Camp itself, nighttime temperatures can easily drop to -15°C to -20°C (5°F to -4°F) or even lower during the coldest months. Even in warmer months, expect temperatures to fall below freezing at night.
#### Is it necessary to bring microspikes or crampons for the EBC trek?
It’s recommended to bring microspikes or crampons for the Everest Base Camp trek, especially if trekking between December and early March. These traction devices provide crucial grip on icy or snow-covered sections, which are common at higher altitudes in winter. However, during peak trekking seasons, the trail typically has little to no snow, making microspikes unnecessary.
#### Is sleeping bag necessary for Everest Base Camp Trek?
A sleeping bag is necessary for the Everest Base Camp Trek. While teahouses provide basic blankets, they are often insufficient for the extreme cold, especially at higher altitudes. A good quality sleeping bag rated for -15°C to -20°C (5°F to -4°F) is essential for a comfortable and safe trek. Nights are cold, and having your sleeping bag allows you to regulate your warmth and ensures a good night’s sleep. On our Everest base camp trek, we will provide you with free usage of a sleeping bag
#### What permits do I need for the Everest Base Camp trek, and where how much does each permit cost?
For the Everest Base Camp trek, you need two permits: the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit, costing about 3,000 NPR (available in Kathmandu or at Monjo), and the Local Area Permit (Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit), which costs 2,000 NPR and can be obtained in Monjo.
#### How has the Everest Base Camp Trek changed in the past decades?
The Everest Base Camp Trek has changed a lot. The amount of trekkers wanting to visit EBC has increased considerably over the years, which has raised environmental, climate, and human problems. The infrastructure and services for trekkers have also improved. Some people even suggest moving the base camp because of the unstable glaciers.
#### Passport, Visa and Entry Requirements
All foreign visitors to Nepal must possess a valid passport with a minimum of 6 months validity beyond their planned departure date.
Nepal visa can be obtained on arrival at Kathmandu airport (Tribhuvan International Airport) or you can obtain Nepal visa prior to your arrival through the Nepalese embassies, diplomatic missions and consulates near your location. Nepal Visa is also issued at the entry points if you are entering Nepal by land.
More detailed information on visa guide, please check: https://highlandexpeditions.com/nepal-visa-guide/
While we share this information in good faith, it is crucial for you to independently verify it and acknowledge that you bear full responsibility for your visa requirements.

Seamless, Supportive, and Truly Memorable EBC Experience
Starting my EBC trek on Diwali was truly special, and Highland Expeditions made it an unforgettable journey. From the moment I landed, Passang and Dawa ensured everything went smoothly — from airport pickup to trek arrangements and back.
On the trail, Horizon’s calm guidance and constant encouragement taught me that it’s okay to go at my own pace — slow doesn’t mean weak, it means steady. Bala was always kind and attentive, while Shikari (the main hero) carried both my duffle and my spirit with his smile and strength.
This trek became more than just reaching Base Camp — it was about letting go, trusting the journey, and realizing the mountains support you when you surrender. I couldn’t have done it without this amazing team. Highly recommend Highland Expeditions for anyone dreaming of trekking in Nepal\!
Thank you so much for making my journey so memorable\!

A Truly Unforgettable Adventure
I’ve dreamed of trekking to Everest Base Camp for years, and this experience exceeded every expectation. From the moment we arrived in Kathmandu, everything was well-organized and thoughtfully planned. Our guide was not only knowledgeable but also incredibly supportive and genuinely cared about our well-being throughout the trek.
The itinerary was well-paced, allowing us enough time to acclimatize properly. The lodges we stayed in were great, especially at lower elevations, and even at higher altitudes, it was still comfortable and welcoming, considering how remote the region is. The views were breathtaking from day one, but reaching Base Camp and then the view from Kalapathar with Everest right in front of us was beyond words.
What stood out was the team’s attention to detail and the way they handled everything smoothly, from flight logistics to lodges and meals, etc. I always felt in good hands.
If you’re thinking about doing the EBC trek, don’t hesitate. It’s physically demanding but incredibly rewarding, and with the right support, it’s completely doable. I’ll carry the memories (and the photos) with me forever.

Read more on [Ramechap to Lukla Flights](https://highlandexpeditions.com/ramechap-to-lukla-flights/)

**Itinerary Disclaimer:** Your safety is of imperative concern while traveling with Highland Expeditions.

**Yes,** the Everest Base Camp trek is for Beginners, but trekkers should be physically and mentally prepared to start the trek.
The Everest Base Camp trek is suitable for you if you are physically fit and okay with trekking for **14-16 days** in a rugged terrain for 5-6 hours daily.
The Everest Base Camp trek costs **USD 1,889 per person.** This is an all-inclusive price that covers all expenses and logistics required for the trek.
