Semporna
has everything you need for an unforgettable experience this weekend! None other than the annual Regatta Lepa, also referred to as “
Lepa-Lepa
” among the locals, we can already envision the crowd that will gather at one of the most happening festivals of the year!           Â
Lepa-Lepa, A Cultural Festival of the Bajau LautÂ
The Regatta Lepa, held annually in Sabah’s vibrant town of Semporna, celebrates the rich culture and traditions of the Bajau community. Known for their deep connection to the sea, the Bajau have long been recognised for their seafaring heritage and exceptional diving skills. Historically navigating the waters of the Celebes Sea, the Bajau have embraced both traditional lifestyles aboard their iconic Lepa houseboats and modern adaptations, including stilted sea homes. This festival pays homage to their enduring relationship with the sea, showcasing their unique customs, craftsmanship, and vibrant culture.
Main Highlights of Regatta LepaÂ
When at Regatta Lepa, here are some of the key activities to look out for!
1. Lepa Floating ParadeÂ
Every year, dozens of colourful Lepa will sail through Dataran Semporna, all vying for the title of the most beautifully decorated Lepa in the traditional Lepa competition. Each boat represents a different family from the various villages in Semporna, with representatives from Philippines and Indonesia joining the festivities in recent years.Â
In selecting the champions, the judges will delve into the complexity of the “
sambulayang”Â
(sails), the “
tipas-tipas”
 (triangular pennants), and the “
panji-panji”
(small rectangular flags). They will also take into account the enchanting traditional music, enhanced by instruments like theÂ
kulintangan
and the gong, alongside the lively “
igal-igal
” dance showcase. Additionally, each Lepa is adorned with musicians and dancers on board, contributing to the lively spirit of this colourful festival.
In Bajau Laut culture, Lepa boats play a versatile role, serving not only as vessels for fishing and transportation but also as venues for weddings and cultural performances.Â
The average time it takes to build a Lepa boat takes anywhere from three months to over a year, and the materials that are typically used include the “
ubar suluk
” (red seraya) wood found exclusively on the islands. Traditionally, it was believed that only certain types of wood were suitable for making Lepa, but with modern techniques, other materials have since been discovered and incorporated.
The design of the lepa is shaped to resemble the figure of a fish which is said to keep the boat from capsizing and rolls with the waves smoothly.Â

2. Marine Sporting ActivitiesÂ
Other activities during the Regatta Lepa include the Lepa Tug of War, “
Kelleh-Kelleh
” (small dugout boat) race, and the Duck Catching Competition, where competitors race to catch ducks swimming in the water!Â
3. Sangom Maglami-LamiÂ
A key part of Regatta Lepa is the “
Sangom Maglami-Lami
,” which occurs during the opening ceremony attended by state ministers and other dignitaries who officiate the event. This occasion holds considerable significance. During this period, the celebration becomes vibrant with crowds eager to see the lepa queens participating in the “
Budjang Manis Cilik
,” a beauty pageant that is distinctive to the Semporna community, alongside the “
Lalla Dorogan
” competition. Furthermore, the program features a variety of traditional performances from different associations, including a display of Semporna’s cultural dance, “
Igal-igal
,” among others.
4. Grand Fireworks DisplayÂ
