So let's talk about what this means for the ETF market.\n00:09\nSpeaker A\nThe NYSE's Global Head of ETFs Ben Slavin is joining me now for this week's ETF report brought to you by PIMco.\n00:15\nSpeaker A\nSo just for folks who are not familiar, Ben, you've got USO, which actually has oil futures. And then you have stuff like XLE, which is energy stocks. So just for people who aren't familiar. But USO, just like we have seen this incredible volatility and action in the price of oil, we've been seeing it in USO also.\n00:41\nBen Slavin\nYes. I mean, USO has been around for 20 years and in the last two days, we've seen record volume. It's really incredible to see. and you've seen more than 30 billion in volume uh in those two days. So investors turning to ETFs and in this case, USO to really uh be able to trade what's happening in the crude markets.\n01:07\nSpeaker A\nI'm so curious like where is this coming from? Who's doing this? In other words, like there are commodities traders who are in oil all the time. They're probably trading crude oil futures whether it be WTI or crude, maybe less so on the ETF side. I don't know. But who like so where is this volume coming from?\n01:31\nBen Slavin\nIt's a great question. ETFs have continued to grow. So just this year alone, we have seen more than 6 billion a day in the first two months of the year come into ETF. So the the short answer is everybody. We're seeing retail, institutional, and also advisor-driven money. In some of these products, certainly they're more um uh skewed towards institutional investors that use these type of products. But we are seeing retail come in and then there's a a wide range of other products. You mentioned um some of the energy sector products and some of the more thematic plays and those have attracted more or tended to attracted more uh advisor and retail money.\n02:22\nSpeaker A\nI mean, the thing is, okay, when you're getting into something like USO, you're subject to the extraordinary volatility. You know, yesterday, of course, you saw Chris Wright, the Energy Secretary, put out a tweet on X that talked about maybe US ships escorting other ships through the straight of Ramus, then they deleted the tweet. So that created all of this whipsawying within the oil market. So, I guess what I'm asking is, are ETF investors prepared for that? Like do people know what they're in for if they're maybe piling into products that they they didn't typically look at while this war is going on?\n03:09\nBen Slavin\nWithout a doubt, it is important to do your homework. And maybe that's more important than ever given the explosion we've seen in the number of products simply available. I mean, we had more than a thousand new ETFs launched just last year. So, for investors to really understand what they're buying and how that product is going to behave, especially when you see the type of volatility that we've seen over the last couple weeks is incredibly important. And I think that allows investors to play a wide variety of strategies. So some, I think what you're alluding to could just be purely for speculation, trying to play um the volatility in the oil markets. But others are using products to hedge their position. Or, you know, or in some cases to provide a short. So there's a lot of ways to use ETFs to express different types of views. So, in some ways you can say it was made for this moment, but you got to do your homework because of again, they're not all created equal.\n04:15\nSpeaker A\nSo let's drill down, pun not intended, on USO versus the XLE, right? The oil itself versus the energy stocks and how investors should be thinking about um advantages and disadvantages or characteristics of each as they're trying to trade this.\n04:36\nBen Slavin\nYeah, it's another great question. I mean, look, when you see a product like USO, obviously that product is designed to give you exposure to crude oil um through the futures market. When you look at a product like XLE or the wide variety of other sector or thematic products, those products are very different. They're holding a basket of energy themed stocks. And though those stocks obviously provide a different return stream than you would if you were just investing directly in crude. They hold companies that of course have exposure to the energy markets, of course they have exposure to oil, but they also do a wide variety of other things. Of course, these are stocks like Exon that are widely diversified. So some of these products do provide a different type of diversification for sure versus just the crude or the spot products. But then at the same time, uh you have to be careful and understand what return you're actually getting and how they're going to behave in these volatile markets. And it's a great jux to position between the two.\n05:44\nSpeaker A\nSince uh the war began, have besides this like sort of, you know, record-breaking action in the oil linked names. Is there anything else that's sort of stood out to you recently as as being unusual volume-wise or otherwise?\n06:06\nBen Slavin\nYeah, I mentioned that stat, that incredible stat of the $6 billion a day we saw in the first two months. It's been still quite elevated here early March. So the short answer is money in motion. And what we have seen is some pullback, um from a risk-taking perspective and some early signs of rotation. Certainly we've seen money come out of equities in the last few days. We've seen money come into fixed income, more of that money coming into the short end of the curve, which clearly, you know, shows some, you know, risk off type of behavior, at least an early sign. At the same time, you are seeing um a slow start to a rotation again out of US equities into international again. Now, whether that's um, you know, part of the geopolitical story or just again, playing the dollar, um, interesting, uh interesting to see what happens. So there are some early signs there from ETF investors. would not call it a trend yet, but again, interesting to note uh again alongside the price action we've seen in oil.\n07:18\nSpeaker A\nYeah, well, when you come back next time, we'll see if it's a trend yet. So let's talk about what this means for the ETF market.\n\n00:09  Speaker A\n\nThe NYSE's Global Head of ETFs Ben Slavin is joining me now for this week's ETF report brought to you by PIMco.\n\n00:15  Speaker A\n\nSo just for folks who are not familiar, Ben, you've got USO, which actually has oil futures. And then you have stuff like XLE, which is energy stocks. So just for people who aren't familiar. But USO, just like we have seen this incredible volatility and action in the price of oil, we've been seeing it in USO also.\n\n00:41  Ben Slavin\n\nYes. I mean, USO has been around for 20 years and in the last two days, we've seen record volume. It's really incredible to see. and you've seen more than 30 billion in volume uh in those two days. So investors turning to ETFs and in this case, USO to really uh be able to trade what's happening in the crude markets.\n\n01:07  Speaker A\n\nI'm so curious like where is this coming from? Who's doing this? In other words, like there are commodities traders who are in oil all the time. They're probably trading crude oil futures whether it be WTI or crude, maybe less so on the ETF side. I don't know. But who like so where is this volume coming from?\n\n01:31  Ben Slavin\n\nIt's a great question. ETFs have continued to grow. So just this year alone, we have seen more than 6 billion a day in the first two months of the year come into ETF. So the the short answer is everybody. We're seeing retail, institutional, and also advisor-driven money. In some of these products, certainly they're more um uh skewed towards institutional investors that use these type of products. But we are seeing retail come in and then there's a a wide range of other products. You mentioned um some of the energy sector products and some of the more thematic plays and those have attracted more or tended to attracted more uh advisor and retail money.\n\n02:22  Speaker A\n\nI mean, the thing is, okay, when you're getting into something like USO, you're subject to the extraordinary volatility. You know, yesterday, of course, you saw Chris Wright, the Energy Secretary, put out a tweet on X that talked about maybe US ships escorting other ships through the straight of Ramus, then they deleted the tweet. So that created all of this whipsawying within the oil market. So, I guess what I'm asking is, are ETF investors prepared for that? Like do people know what they're in for if they're maybe piling into products that they they didn't typically look at while this war is going on?\n\n03:09  Ben Slavin\n\nWithout a doubt, it is important to do your homework. And maybe that's more important than ever given the explosion we've seen in the number of products simply available. I mean, we had more than a thousand new ETFs launched just last year. So, for investors to really understand what they're buying and how that product is going to behave, especially when you see the type of volatility that we've seen over the last couple weeks is incredibly important. And I think that allows investors to play a wide variety of strategies. So some, I think what you're alluding to could just be purely for speculation, trying to play um the volatility in the oil markets. But others are using products to hedge their position. Or, you know, or in some cases to provide a short. So there's a lot of ways to use ETFs to express different types of views. So, in some ways you can say it was made for this moment, but you got to do your homework because of again, they're not all created equal.\n\n04:15  Speaker A\n\nSo let's drill down, pun not intended, on USO versus the XLE, right? The oil itself versus the energy stocks and how investors should be thinking about um advantages and disadvantages or characteristics of each as they're trying to trade this.\n\n04:36  Ben Slavin\n\nYeah, it's another great question. I mean, look, when you see a product like USO, obviously that product is designed to give you exposure to crude oil um through the futures market. When you look at a product like XLE or the wide variety of other sector or thematic products, those products are very different. They're holding a basket of energy themed stocks. And though those stocks obviously provide a different return stream than you would if you were just investing directly in crude. They hold companies that of course have exposure to the energy markets, of course they have exposure to oil, but they also do a wide variety of other things. Of course, these are stocks like Exon that are widely diversified. So some of these products do provide a different type of diversification for sure versus just the crude or the spot products. But then at the same time, uh you have to be careful and understand what return you're actually getting and how they're going to behave in these volatile markets. And it's a great jux to position between the two.\n\n05:44  Speaker A\n\nSince uh the war began, have besides this like sort of, you know, record-breaking action in the oil linked names. Is there anything else that's sort of stood out to you recently as as being unusual volume-wise or otherwise?\n\n06:06  Ben Slavin\n\nYeah, I mentioned that stat, that incredible stat of the \\$6 billion a day we saw in the first two months. It's been still quite elevated here early March. So the short answer is money in motion. And what we have seen is some pullback, um from a risk-taking perspective and some early signs of rotation. Certainly we've seen money come out of equities in the last few days. We've seen money come into fixed income, more of that money coming into the short end of the curve, which clearly, you know, shows some, you know, risk off type of behavior, at least an early sign. At the same time, you are seeing um a slow start to a rotation again out of US equities into international again. Now, whether that's um, you know, part of the geopolitical story or just again, playing the dollar, um, interesting, uh interesting to see what happens. And then you have stuff like XLE, which is energy stocks. So just for people who aren't familiar. But USO, just like we have seen this incredible volatility and action in the price of oil, we've been seeing it in USO also.\n\n00:41  Ben Slavin\n\nYes. I mean, USO has been around for 20 years and in the last two days, we've seen record volume. It's really incredible to see. and you've seen more than 30 billion in volume uh in those two days. So investors turning to ETFs and in this case, USO to really uh be able to trade what's happening in the crude markets.\n\n01:07  Speaker A\n\nI'm so curious like where is this coming from? Who's doing this? In other words, like there are commodities traders who are in oil all the time. They're probably trading crude oil futures whether it be WTI or crude, maybe less so on the ETF side. I don't know. But who like so where is this volume coming from?\n\n01:31  Ben Slavin\n\nIt's a great question. ETFs have continued to grow. So just this year alone, we have seen more than 6 billion a day in the first two months of the year come into ETF. So the the short answer is everybody. We're seeing retail, institutional, and also advisor-driven money. In some of these products, certainly they're more um uh skewed towards institutional investors that use these type of products. But we are seeing retail come in and then there's a a wide range of other products. You mentioned um some of the energy sector products and some of the more thematic plays and those have attracted more or tended to attracted more uh advisor and retail money.\n\n02:22  Speaker A\n\nI mean, the thing is, okay, when you're getting into something like USO, you're subject to the extraordinary volatility. You know, yesterday, of course, you saw Chris Wright, the Energy Secretary, put out a tweet on X that talked about maybe US ships escorting other ships through the straight of Ramus, then they deleted the tweet. So that created all of this whipsawying within the oil market. So, I guess what I'm asking is, are ETF investors prepared for that? Like do people know what they're in for if they're maybe piling into products that they they didn't typically look at while this war is going on?\n\n03:09  Ben Slavin\n\nWithout a doubt, it is important to do your homework. And maybe that's more important than ever given the explosion we've seen in the number of products simply available. I mean, we had more than a thousand new ETFs launched just last year. So, for investors to really understand what they're buying and how that product is going to behave, especially when you see the type of volatility that we've seen over the last couple weeks is incredibly important. And I think that allows investors to play a wide variety of strategies. So some, I think what you're alluding to could just be purely for speculation, trying to play um the volatility in the oil markets. But others are using products to hedge their position. Or, you know, or in some cases to provide a short. So there's a lot of ways to use ETFs to express different types of views. Video Transcript 00:00 Speaker A Oil markets of course have been surging in the war uh amidst the war uh in Iran. So let's talk about what this means for the ETF market. 00:09 Speaker A The NYSE's Global Head of ETFs Ben Slavin is joining me now for this week's ETF report brought to you by PIMco. 00:15 Speaker A So just for folks who are not familiar, Ben, you've got USO, which actually has oil futures. And then you have stuff like XLE, which is energy stocks. So just for people who aren't familiar. But USO, just like we have seen this incredible volatility and action in the price of oil, we've been seeing it in USO also. 00:41 Ben Slavin Yes. I mean, USO has been around for 20 years and in the last two days, we've seen record volume. It's really incredible to see. and you've seen more than 30 billion in volume uh in those two days. So investors turning to ETFs and in this case, USO to really uh be able to trade what's happening in the crude markets. 01:07 Speaker A I'm so curious like where is this coming from? Who's doing this? In other words, like there are commodities traders who are in oil all the time. They're probably trading crude oil futures whether it be WTI or crude, maybe less so on the ETF side. I don't know. But who like so where is this volume coming from? 01:31 Ben Slavin It's a great question. ETFs have continued to grow. So just this year alone, we have seen more than 6 billion a day in the first two months of the year come into ETF. So the the short answer is everybody. We're seeing retail, institutional, and also advisor-driven money. In some of these products, certainly they're more um uh skewed towards institutional investors that use these type of products. But we are seeing retail come in and then there's a a wide range of other products. You mentioned um some of the energy sector products and some of the more thematic plays and those have attracted more or tended to attracted more uh advisor and retail money. 02:22 Speaker A I mean, the thing is, okay, when you're getting into something like USO, you're subject to the extraordinary volatility. You know, yesterday, of course, you saw Chris Wright, the Energy Secretary, put out a tweet on X that talked about maybe US ships escorting other ships through the straight of Ramus, then they deleted the tweet. So that created all of this whipsawying within the oil market. So, I guess what I'm asking is, are ETF investors prepared for that? Like do people know what they're in for if they're maybe piling into products that they they didn't typically look at while this war is going on? 03:09 Ben Slavin Without a doubt, it is important to do your homework. And maybe that's more important than ever given the explosion we've seen in the number of products simply available. I mean, we had more than a thousand new ETFs launched just last year. So, for investors to really understand what they're buying and how that product is going to behave, especially when you see the type of volatility that we've seen over the last couple weeks is incredibly important. And I think that allows investors to play a wide variety of strategies. So some, I think what you're alluding to could just be purely for speculation, trying to play um the volatility in the oil markets. But others are using products to hedge their position. Or, you know, or in some cases to provide a short. So there's a lot of ways to use ETFs to express different types of views. So, in some ways you can say it was made for this moment, but you got to do your homework because of again, they're not all created equal. 04:15 Speaker A So let's drill down, pun not intended, on USO versus the XLE, right? The oil itself versus the energy stocks and how investors should be thinking about um advantages and disadvantages or characteristics of each as they're trying to trade this. 04:36 Ben Slavin Yeah, it's another great question. I mean, look, when you see a product like USO, obviously that product is designed to give you exposure to crude oil um through the futures market. When you look at a product like XLE or the wide variety of other sector or thematic products, those products are very different. They're holding a basket of energy themed stocks. And though those stocks obviously provide a different return stream than you would if you were just investing directly in crude. They hold companies that of course have exposure to the energy markets, of course they have exposure to oil, but they also do a wide variety of other things. Of course, these are stocks like Exon that are widely diversified. So some of these products do provide a different type of diversification for sure versus just the crude or the spot products. But then at the same time, uh you have to be careful and understand what return you're actually getting and how they're going to behave in these volatile markets. And it's a great jux to position between the two. 05:44 Speaker A Since uh the war began, have besides this like sort of, you know, record-breaking action in the oil linked names. Is there anything else that's sort of stood out to you recently as as being unusual volume-wise or otherwise? 06:06 Ben Slavin Yeah, I mentioned that stat, that incredible stat of the \$6 billion a day we saw in the first two months. It's been still quite elevated here early March. So the short answer is money in motion. And what we have seen is some pullback, um from a risk-taking perspective and some early signs of rotation. Certainly we've seen money come out of equities in the last few days. We've seen money come into fixed income, more of that money coming into the short end of the curve, which clearly, you know, shows some, you know, risk off type of behavior, at least an early sign. At the same time, you are seeing um a slow start to a rotation again out of US equities into international again. Now, whether that's um, you know, part of the geopolitical story or just again, playing the dollar, um, interesting, uh interesting to see what happens. So there are some early signs there from ETF investors. would not call it a trend yet, but again, interesting to note uh again alongside the price action we've seen in oil. 07:18 Speaker A Yeah, well, when you come back next time, we'll see if it's a trend yet. So let's talk about what this means for the ETF market. 00:09 Speaker A The NYSE's Global Head of ETFs Ben Slavin is joining me now for this week's ETF report brought to you by PIMco. 00:15 Speaker A So just for folks who are not familiar, Ben, you've got USO, which actually has oil futures. And then you have stuff like XLE, which is energy stocks. So just for people who aren't familiar. But USO, just like we have seen this incredible volatility and action in the price of oil, we've been seeing it in USO also. 00:41 Ben Slavin Yes. I mean, USO has been around for 20 years and in the last two days, we've seen record volume. It's really incredible to see. and you've seen more than 30 billion in volume uh in those two days. So investors turning to ETFs and in this case, USO to really uh be able to trade what's happening in the crude markets. 01:07 Speaker A I'm so curious like where is this coming from? Who's doing this? In other words, like there are commodities traders who are in oil all the time. They're probably trading crude oil futures whether it be WTI or crude, maybe less so on the ETF side. I don't know. But who like so where is this volume coming from? 01:31 Ben Slavin It's a great question. ETFs have continued to grow. So just this year alone, we have seen more than 6 billion a day in the first two months of the year come into ETF. So the the short answer is everybody. We're seeing retail, institutional, and also advisor-driven money. In some of these products, certainly they're more um uh skewed towards institutional investors that use these type of products. But we are seeing retail come in and then there's a a wide range of other products. You mentioned um some of the energy sector products and some of the more thematic plays and those have attracted more or tended to attracted more uh advisor and retail money. 02:22 Speaker A I mean, the thing is, okay, when you're getting into something like USO, you're subject to the extraordinary volatility. You know, yesterday, of course, you saw Chris Wright, the Energy Secretary, put out a tweet on X that talked about maybe US ships escorting other ships through the straight of Ramus, then they deleted the tweet. So that created all of this whipsawying within the oil market. So, I guess what I'm asking is, are ETF investors prepared for that? Like do people know what they're in for if they're maybe piling into products that they they didn't typically look at while this war is going on? 03:09 Ben Slavin Without a doubt, it is important to do your homework. And maybe that's more important than ever given the explosion we've seen in the number of products simply available. I mean, we had more than a thousand new ETFs launched just last year. So, for investors to really understand what they're buying and how that product is going to behave, especially when you see the type of volatility that we've seen over the last couple weeks is incredibly important. And I think that allows investors to play a wide variety of strategies. So some, I think what you're alluding to could just be purely for speculation, trying to play um the volatility in the oil markets. But others are using products to hedge their position. Or, you know, or in some cases to provide a short. So there's a lot of ways to use ETFs to express different types of views. So, in some ways you can say it was made for this moment, but you got to do your homework because of again, they're not all created equal. 04:15 Speaker A So let's drill down, pun not intended, on USO versus the XLE, right?
