Like, is it sort of like handshakes all around? Or no, this, we should really think of this. This is like, you know, new legally binding policy.\n02:10\nJen\nSo it's a little bit of both, Josh. It is a voluntary pledge.\n02:16\nJen\nBut where the rubber meets the road is that these companies are investing and negotiating major power purchase agreements. And these are long-term contracts, generally about 15 years in length, that are going to be signed with states and utilities.\n02:37\nJen\nSo, if these companies are signing the dotted line that they have to adhere to those agreements for years. And so this is this is a major change for states like Texas that are going to be seeing these data centers built out. And as I mentioned in my reporting, they are expected to pay new rates that they are going to negotiate with states and with power utilities.\n02:59\nJosh\nDespite these moves, right? Our utility bills, they keep climbing. I'm curious who you think politically would get nailed by that? Who would get the blame? Is that Trump? Is it Big tech? Is it both? What do you think?\n03:10\nJen\nIt could be a little bit of both. I mean, ultimately the administration is touting this, so probably the buck stops with the president, with Energy Secretary Chris Wright. We hear a lot about rising electricity prices, part of that being AI, but it's not just AI, right? There's a lot of demand across this grid. So there's a lot of other actions that this administration needs to take to bring electricity prices down. Like, is it sort of like handshakes all around? Or no, this, we should really think of this. This is like, you know, new legally binding policy.\n\n02:10  Jen\n\nSo it's a little bit of both, Josh. It is a voluntary pledge.\n\n02:16  Jen\n\nBut where the rubber meets the road is that these companies are investing and negotiating major power purchase agreements. And these are long-term contracts, generally about 15 years in length, that are going to be signed with states and utilities.\n\n02:37  Jen\n\nSo, if these companies are signing the dotted line that they have to adhere to those agreements for years. And so this is this is a major change for states like Texas that are going to be seeing these data centers built out. And as I mentioned in my reporting, they are expected to pay new rates that they are going to negotiate with states and with power utilities.\n\n02:59  Josh\n\nDespite these moves, right? Our utility bills, they keep climbing. I'm curious who you think politically would get nailed by that? Who would get the blame? Is that Trump? Is it Big tech? Is it both? What do you think?\n\n03:10  Jen\n\nIt could be a little bit of both. I mean, ultimately the administration is touting this, so probably the buck stops with the president, with Energy Secretary Chris Wright. We hear a lot about rising electricity prices, part of that being AI, but it's not just AI, right? There's a lot of demand across this grid. So there's a lot of other actions that this administration needs to take to bring electricity prices down. It is a voluntary pledge.\n\n02:16  Jen\n\nBut where the rubber meets the road is that these companies are investing and negotiating major power purchase agreements. And these are long-term contracts, generally about 15 years in length, that are going to be signed with states and utilities.\n\n02:37  Jen\n\nSo, if these companies are signing the dotted line that they have to adhere to those agreements for years. And so this is this is a major change for states like Texas that are going to be seeing these data centers built out. And as I mentioned in my reporting, they are expected to pay new rates that they are going to negotiate with states and with power utilities.\n\n02:59  Josh\n\nDespite these moves, right? Our utility bills, they keep climbing. I'm curious who you think politically would get nailed by that? Who would get the blame? Is that Trump? Is it Big tech? Is it both? To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more [Market Domination.](https://finance.yahoo.com/videos/series/market-domination/) Video Transcript 00:00 Donald Trump By 2035, energy demand is expected to more than triple. 00:03 Donald Trump Under the ratepayer protection pledge we're signing today, the big tech companies are making five important commitments to keep utility prices down for American consumers. 00:15 Donald Trump Big tech companies are committing to fully cover the cost of increased electricity production required for AI data centers. 00:25 Donald Trump Prices for American communities will not go up, but in many cases will actually come down and very substantially. 00:34 Donald Trump People think that if a data center goes in, their electricity prices are going to go up, and that's not happening. 00:46 Jen Google, Microsoft, Oracle, OpenAI, Amazon and XAI, all signing what is being dubbed the Ratepayer Protection pledge, rate payer for electricity rates. 01:03 Jen Now, under this agreement, companies are pledging to build, bring or buy new generation capacity for data centers and cover the full cost of infrastructure upgrades needed to service their data centers. 01:21 Jen Where possible, these companies will add capacity to serve the public by increasing power supply. 01:28 Jen Companies will also negotiate new separate rate structures with utilities and states wherever they build their data centers, and they will pay these rates for power and related infrastructure that are brought online to service their data centers, whether they use that electricity or not. 01:46 Jen Now, Energy Secretary Chris Wright saying that the administration is ultimately looking to cap electricity prices so that electricity prices ultimately decline this part of that effort to do so. 01:57 Josh Is this sort of like a, a voluntary pledge, Jen? Like, is it sort of like handshakes all around? Or no, this, we should really think of this. This is like, you know, new legally binding policy. 02:10 Jen So it's a little bit of both, Josh. It is a voluntary pledge. 02:16 Jen But where the rubber meets the road is that these companies are investing and negotiating major power purchase agreements. And these are long-term contracts, generally about 15 years in length, that are going to be signed with states and utilities. 02:37 Jen So, if these companies are signing the dotted line that they have to adhere to those agreements for years. And so this is this is a major change for states like Texas that are going to be seeing these data centers built out. And as I mentioned in my reporting, they are expected to pay new rates that they are going to negotiate with states and with power utilities. 02:59 Josh Despite these moves, right? Our utility bills, they keep climbing. I'm curious who you think politically would get nailed by that? Who would get the blame? Is that Trump? Is it Big tech? Is it both? What do you think? 03:10 Jen It could be a little bit of both. I mean, ultimately the administration is touting this, so probably the buck stops with the president, with Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
