What what do you think what do you think the tone is here, the style? Does he stick with the the sort of folksy buffet approach Kathy, you know, it's cherry Cokes and cheeseburger kind of vibe or no, we should expect something, you know, more buttoned up.\n00:13\nCathy\nWell, I think there's what investors are hoping for and then there's what I think investors might get, and there's a little bit of a disconnect there. I think investors would really like to get a greater sense of who Greg Abel is and what he intends to bring to the process of managing Berkshire.\n00:30\nCathy\nI think people would like to know what his management style is, if they're going to be any more executive changes, um, you know, a little more detail about how he intends to deploy the cash hoard that Berkshire has. The reality is, I think investors should also prepare themselves for this annual letter to be an homage to Warren Buffett, and we may not learn anymore about Greg Abel.\n00:58\nSpeaker A\nHow do you think investors react if that's what we get, Kathy?\n01:02\nCathy\nIf there is a cohort within the investor group that needs more from this company, more information, more transparency, um, you know, greater insight into strategies and things like that.\n01:21\nCathy\nAs the old cohort of Berkshire investors sort of age out, there's a new investor base that not that's not going to necessarily give Greg Abel the pass or the the free rain that they gave Warren Buffett.\n01:42\nSpeaker A\nYou mentioned that that cash award. Baron's had a good write up. I don't know if you saw that. They argue there is more pressure now they say to return more cash to shareholders. They point out company's cash pile has more than doubled over the past two years to over 350 billion dollars that Berkshire they say has more cash than any other American company.\n02:08\nCathy\nBut some of that cash is kept on hand to pay insurance liability. So, you know, all of that cash is not necessarily um deployable.\n02:22\nCathy\nI think the other thing people need to keep in mind is they have a litigation liability at Pacific Corp. It's a significant liability. So but even taking that aside, there is still, I don't know, do you want to say 100 billion dollars that could be deployed?\n02:45\nCathy\nI don't think it's unreasonable for shareholders and investors to expect um Berkshire Hathaway to have a more defined um share buyback plan, you know, we're going to allocate X amount of dollars to repurchase shares, but I think investors would like a little more structure.\n03:07\nCathy\nThere are other companies out there in, you know, in consolidating markets that also say we're going to allocate X amount of funds for acquisitions. acquisitions have long been part of Berkshire Hathaway's strategy.\n03:25\nSpeaker A\nWhat though happens if Greg Abel decides, you know what, I'm not going to do anything with this cash pile. I'm going to continue sitting on it. What would that mean for the stock?\n03:36\nCathy\nThe stock right now in my opinion is struggling to find a catalyst. It's not particularly cheap. revenue growth is very modest. They don't pay a dividend. Um and so I think my opinion on the stock right now is hold, I think it's going to mark a perform. And so unless we start to see steps like we've previously discussed and what I've outlined, I think it's going to the stock is going to struggle.\n04:07\nSpeaker A\nHow would you anticipate Kathy, Greg Abel's management style to compare and contrast with Buffett?\n04:16\nCathy\nHistorically Berkshire has had a really decentralized management style. It's got advantages and it's got disadvantages. The early glimmers of what we've seen of Greg's actions indicate to me that he's likely to be a little more buttoned up.\n04:32\nCathy\nWhich I actually think is a positive thing and one of the things I've talked about with our clients is the notion that he may take a fine tooth comb over the far-flung Berkshire Empire of subsidiaries and he may decide some of them, you know, may need to be sold, maybe they need to be consolidated. I actually think that would be a good thing to kind of tighten up things a little bit.\n04:58\nSpeaker A\nDoes Berkshire need a CIO, a chief investment officer, one and two, if so, Kathy, anybody out there that you think yes, that person would be a good fit.\n05:12\nCathy\nWell, they sort of de facto have one in Ted Wexler. and I think one of the things that people are going to be looking for is whether or not Greg Abel is going to make any more changes to the C suite. They could very easily bring in um outside management to run that portfolio.\n05:32\nCathy\nSo, yes, to answer your question, I think they could use a chief investment officer. What what do you think what do you think the tone is here, the style? Does he stick with the the sort of folksy buffet approach Kathy, you know, it's cherry Cokes and cheeseburger kind of vibe or no, we should expect something, you know, more buttoned up.\n\n00:13  Cathy\n\nWell, I think there's what investors are hoping for and then there's what I think investors might get, and there's a little bit of a disconnect there. I think investors would really like to get a greater sense of who Greg Abel is and what he intends to bring to the process of managing Berkshire.\n\n00:30  Cathy\n\nI think people would like to know what his management style is, if they're going to be any more executive changes, um, you know, a little more detail about how he intends to deploy the cash hoard that Berkshire has. The reality is, I think investors should also prepare themselves for this annual letter to be an homage to Warren Buffett, and we may not learn anymore about Greg Abel.\n\n00:58  Speaker A\n\nHow do you think investors react if that's what we get, Kathy?\n\n01:02  Cathy\n\nIf there is a cohort within the investor group that needs more from this company, more information, more transparency, um, you know, greater insight into strategies and things like that.\n\n01:21  Cathy\n\nAs the old cohort of Berkshire investors sort of age out, there's a new investor base that not that's not going to necessarily give Greg Abel the pass or the the free rain that they gave Warren Buffett.\n\n01:42  Speaker A\n\nYou mentioned that that cash award. Baron's had a good write up. I don't know if you saw that. They argue there is more pressure now they say to return more cash to shareholders. They point out company's cash pile has more than doubled over the past two years to over 350 billion dollars that Berkshire they say has more cash than any other American company.\n\n02:08  Cathy\n\nBut some of that cash is kept on hand to pay insurance liability. So, you know, all of that cash is not necessarily um deployable.\n\n02:22  Cathy\n\nI think the other thing people need to keep in mind is they have a litigation liability at Pacific Corp. It's a significant liability. So but even taking that aside, there is still, I don't know, do you want to say 100 billion dollars that could be deployed?\n\n02:45  Cathy\n\nI don't think it's unreasonable for shareholders and investors to expect um Berkshire Hathaway to have a more defined um share buyback plan, you know, we're going to allocate X amount of dollars to repurchase shares, but I think investors would like a little more structure.\n\n03:07  Cathy\n\nThere are other companies out there in, you know, in consolidating markets that also say we're going to allocate X amount of funds for acquisitions. acquisitions have long been part of Berkshire Hathaway's strategy.\n\n03:25  Speaker A\n\nWhat though happens if Greg Abel decides, you know what, I'm not going to do anything with this cash pile. I'm going to continue sitting on it. What would that mean for the stock?\n\n03:36  Cathy\n\nThe stock right now in my opinion is struggling to find a catalyst. It's not particularly cheap. revenue growth is very modest. They don't pay a dividend. Um and so I think my opinion on the stock right now is hold, I think it's going to mark a perform. And so unless we start to see steps like we've previously discussed and what I've outlined, I think it's going to the stock is going to struggle.\n\n04:07  Speaker A\n\nHow would you anticipate Kathy, Greg Abel's management style to compare and contrast with Buffett?\n\n04:16  Cathy\n\nHistorically Berkshire has had a really decentralized management style. It's got advantages and it's got disadvantages. The early glimmers of what we've seen of Greg's actions indicate to me that he's likely to be a little more buttoned up.\n\n04:32  Cathy\n\nWhich I actually think is a positive thing and one of the things I've talked about with our clients is the notion that he may take a fine tooth comb over the far-flung Berkshire Empire of subsidiaries and he may decide some of them, you know, may need to be sold, maybe they need to be consolidated. I actually think that would be a good thing to kind of tighten up things a little bit.\n\n04:58  Speaker A\n\nDoes Berkshire need a CIO, a chief investment officer, one and two, if so, Kathy, anybody out there that you think yes, that person would be a good fit.\n\n05:12  Cathy\n\nWell, they sort of de facto have one in Ted Wexler. and I think one of the things that people are going to be looking for is whether or not Greg Abel is going to make any more changes to the C suite. They could very easily bring in um outside management to run that portfolio.\n\n05:32  Cathy\n\nSo, yes, to answer your question, I think they could use a chief investment officer. The reality is, I think investors should also prepare themselves for this annual letter to be an homage to Warren Buffett, and we may not learn anymore about Greg Abel.\n\n00:58  Speaker A\n\nHow do you think investors react if that's what we get, Kathy?\n\n01:02  Cathy\n\nIf there is a cohort within the investor group that needs more from this company, more information, more transparency, um, you know, greater insight into strategies and things like that.\n\n01:21  Cathy\n\nAs the old cohort of Berkshire investors sort of age out, there's a new investor base that not that's not going to necessarily give Greg Abel the pass or the the free rain that they gave Warren Buffett.\n\n01:42  Speaker A\n\nYou mentioned that that cash award. Baron's had a good write up. I don't know if you saw that. They argue there is more pressure now they say to return more cash to shareholders. They point out company's cash pile has more than doubled over the past two years to over 350 billion dollars that Berkshire they say has more cash than any other American company.\n\n02:08  Cathy\n\nBut some of that cash is kept on hand to pay insurance liability. So, you know, all of that cash is not necessarily um deployable.\n\n02:22  Cathy\n\nI think the other thing people need to keep in mind is they have a litigation liability at Pacific Corp. It's a significant liability. So but even taking that aside, there is still, I don't know, do you want to say 100 billion dollars that could be deployed?\n\n02:45  Cathy\n\nI don't think it's unreasonable for shareholders and investors to expect um Berkshire Hathaway to have a more defined um share buyback plan, you know, we're going to allocate X amount of dollars to repurchase shares, but I think investors would like a little more structure.\n\n03:07  Cathy\n\nThere are other companies out there in, you know, in consolidating markets that also say we're going to allocate X amount of funds for acquisitions. acquisitions have long been part of Berkshire Hathaway's strategy.\n\n03:25  Speaker A\n\nWhat though happens if Greg Abel decides, you know what, I'm not going to do anything with this cash pile. I'm going to continue sitting on it. What would that mean for the stock?\n\n03:36  Cathy\n\nThe stock right now in my opinion is struggling to find a catalyst. It's not particularly cheap. revenue growth is very modest. They don't pay a dividend. Um and so I think my opinion on the stock right now is hold, I think it's going to mark a perform. And so unless we start to see steps like we've previously discussed and what I've outlined, I think it's going to the stock is going to struggle.\n\n04:07  Speaker A\n\nHow would you anticipate Kathy, Greg Abel's management style to compare and contrast with Buffett?\n\n04:16  Cathy\n\nHistorically Berkshire has had a really decentralized management style. It's got advantages and it's got disadvantages. The early glimmers of what we've seen of Greg's actions indicate to me that he's likely to be a little more buttoned up.\n\n04:32  Cathy\n\nWhich I actually think is a positive thing and one of the things I've talked about with our clients is the notion that he may take a fine tooth comb over the far-flung Berkshire Empire of subsidiaries and he may decide some of them, you know, may need to be sold, maybe they need to be consolidated. I actually think that would be a good thing to kind of tighten up things a little bit.\n\n04:58  Speaker A\n\nDoes Berkshire need a CIO, a chief investment officer, one and two, if so, Kathy, anybody out there that you think yes, that person would be a good fit.\n\n05:12  Cathy\n\nWell, they sort of de facto have one in Ted Wexler. and I think one of the things that people are going to be looking for is whether or not Greg Abel is going to make any more changes to the C suite. They could very easily bring in um outside management to run that portfolio.\n\n05:32  Cathy\n\nSo, yes, to answer your question, I think they could use a chief investment officer. The company's new CEO, Greg Abel, will also share his plans for the post-Buffett era in his first shareholder letter as chief executive. Video Transcript 00:00 Speaker A How how tough is this assignment uh for Greg Abel, Kathy with this letter? What what do you think what do you think the tone is here, the style? Does he stick with the the sort of folksy buffet approach Kathy, you know, it's cherry Cokes and cheeseburger kind of vibe or no, we should expect something, you know, more buttoned up. 00:13 Cathy Well, I think there's what investors are hoping for and then there's what I think investors might get, and there's a little bit of a disconnect there. I think investors would really like to get a greater sense of who Greg Abel is and what he intends to bring to the process of managing Berkshire. 00:30 Cathy I think people would like to know what his management style is, if they're going to be any more executive changes, um, you know, a little more detail about how he intends to deploy the cash hoard that Berkshire has. The reality is, I think investors should also prepare themselves for this annual letter to be an homage to Warren Buffett, and we may not learn anymore about Greg Abel. 00:58 Speaker A How do you think investors react if that's what we get, Kathy? 01:02 Cathy If there is a cohort within the investor group that needs more from this company, more information, more transparency, um, you know, greater insight into strategies and things like that. 01:21 Cathy As the old cohort of Berkshire investors sort of age out, there's a new investor base that not that's not going to necessarily give Greg Abel the pass or the the free rain that they gave Warren Buffett. 01:42 Speaker A You mentioned that that cash award. Baron's had a good write up. I don't know if you saw that. They argue there is more pressure now they say to return more cash to shareholders. They point out company's cash pile has more than doubled over the past two years to over 350 billion dollars that Berkshire they say has more cash than any other American company. 02:08 Cathy But some of that cash is kept on hand to pay insurance liability. So, you know, all of that cash is not necessarily um deployable. 02:22 Cathy I think the other thing people need to keep in mind is they have a litigation liability at Pacific Corp. It's a significant liability. So but even taking that aside, there is still, I don't know, do you want to say 100 billion dollars that could be deployed? 02:45 Cathy I don't think it's unreasonable for shareholders and investors to expect um Berkshire Hathaway to have a more defined um share buyback plan, you know, we're going to allocate X amount of dollars to repurchase shares, but I think investors would like a little more structure. 03:07 Cathy There are other companies out there in, you know, in consolidating markets that also say we're going to allocate X amount of funds for acquisitions. acquisitions have long been part of Berkshire Hathaway's strategy. 03:25 Speaker A What though happens if Greg Abel decides, you know what, I'm not going to do anything with this cash pile. I'm going to continue sitting on it. What would that mean for the stock? 03:36 Cathy The stock right now in my opinion is struggling to find a catalyst. It's not particularly cheap. revenue growth is very modest. They don't pay a dividend. Um and so I think my opinion on the stock right now is hold, I think it's going to mark a perform. And so unless we start to see steps like we've previously discussed and what I've outlined, I think it's going to the stock is going to struggle. 04:07 Speaker A How would you anticipate Kathy, Greg Abel's management style to compare and contrast with Buffett? 04:16 Cathy Historically Berkshire has had a really decentralized management style. It's got advantages and it's got disadvantages. The early glimmers of what we've seen of Greg's actions indicate to me that he's likely to be a little more buttoned up. 04:32 Cathy Which I actually think is a positive thing and one of the things I've talked about with our clients is the notion that he may take a fine tooth comb over the far-flung Berkshire Empire of subsidiaries and he may decide some of them, you know, may need to be sold, maybe they need to be consolidated. I actually think that would be a good thing to kind of tighten up things a little bit. 04:58 Speaker A Does Berkshire need a CIO, a chief investment officer, one and two, if so, Kathy, anybody out there that you think yes, that person would be a good fit. 05:12 Cathy Well, they sort of de facto have one in Ted Wexler. and I think one of the things that people are going to be looking for is whether or not Greg Abel is going to make any more changes to the C suite. They could very easily bring in um outside management to run that portfolio. 05:32 Cathy So, yes, to answer your question, I think they could use a chief investment officer. It remains to be seen whether or not he's going to expand the C suite. What what do you think what do you think the tone is here, the style? Does he stick with the the sort of folksy buffet approach Kathy, you know, it's cherry Cokes and cheeseburger kind of vibe or no, we should expect something, you know, more buttoned up. 00:13 Cathy Well, I think there's what investors are hoping for and then there's what I think investors might get, and there's a little bit of a disconnect there. I think investors would really like to get a greater sense of who Greg Abel is and what he intends to bring to the process of managing Berkshire. 00:30 Cathy I think people would like to know what his management style is, if they're going to be any more executive changes, um, you know, a little more detail about how he intends to deploy the cash hoard that Berkshire has. The reality is, I think investors should also prepare themselves for this annual letter to be an homage to Warren Buffett, and we may not learn anymore about Greg Abel. 00:58 Speaker A How do you think investors react if that's what we get, Kathy? 01:02 Cathy If there is a cohort within the investor group that needs more from this company, more information, more transparency, um, you know, greater insight into strategies and things like that. 01:21 Cathy As the old cohort of Berkshire investors sort of age out, there's a new investor base that not that's not going to necessarily give Greg Abel the pass or the the free rain that they gave Warren Buffett. 01:42 Speaker A You mentioned that that cash award. Baron's had a good write up. I don't know if you saw that. They argue there is more pressure now they say to return more cash to shareholders. They point out company's cash pile has more than doubled over the past two years to over 350 billion dollars that Berkshire they say has more cash than any other American company. 02:08 Cathy But some of that cash is kept on hand to pay insurance liability. So, you know, all of that cash is not necessarily um deployable. 02:22 Cathy I think the other thing people need to keep in mind is they have a litigation liability at Pacific Corp. It's a significant liability. So but even taking that aside, there is still, I don't know, do you want to say 100 billion dollars that could be deployed? 02:45 Cathy I don't think it's unreasonable for shareholders and investors to expect um Berkshire Hathaway to have a more defined um share buyback plan, you know, we're going to allocate X amount of dollars to repurchase shares, but I think investors would like a little more structure. 03:07 Cathy There are other companies out there in, you know, in consolidating markets that also say we're going to allocate X amount of funds for acquisitions. acquisitions have long been part of Berkshire Hathaway's strategy. 03:25 Speaker A What though happens if Greg Abel decides, you know what, I'm not going to do anything with this cash pile. I'm going to continue sitting on it. What would that mean for the stock? 03:36 Cathy The stock right now in my opinion is struggling to find a catalyst. It's not particularly cheap. revenue growth is very modest. They don't pay a dividend. Um and so I think my opinion on the stock right now is hold, I think it's going to mark a perform. And so unless we start to see steps like we've previously discussed and what I've outlined, I think it's going to the stock is going to struggle. 04:07 Speaker A How would you anticipate Kathy, Greg Abel's management style to compare and contrast with Buffett? 04:16 Cathy Historically Berkshire has had a really decentralized management style. It's got advantages and it's got disadvantages. The early glimmers of what we've seen of Greg's actions indicate to me that he's likely to be a little more buttoned up. 04:32 Cathy Which I actually think is a positive thing and one of the things I've talked about with our clients is the notion that he may take a fine tooth comb over the far-flung Berkshire Empire of subsidiaries and he may decide some of them, you know, may need to be sold, maybe they need to be consolidated. I actually think that would be a good thing to kind of tighten up things a little bit. 04:58 Speaker A Does Berkshire need a CIO, a chief investment officer, one and two, if so, Kathy, anybody out there that you think yes, that person would be a good fit. 05:12 Cathy Well, they sort of de facto have one in Ted Wexler. and I think one of the things that people are going to be looking for is whether or not Greg Abel is going to make any more changes to the C suite. They could very easily bring in um outside management to run that portfolio. 05:32 Cathy So, yes, to answer your question, I think they could use a chief investment officer. It remains to be seen whether or not he's going to expand the C suite.
