He is no stranger to a challenge, but former GAA star Pádraig O'Hora is about to face a test of patience and strength like no other - and it isn't his trip to Mount Everest.
Stepping away from football in 2024, Pádraig has been focusing on a different sport that puts the mind and body to the test.
This month, Pádraig will take part in an expedition to climb the highest mountain in the world, but his biggest fear is not the cold temperatures or lack of oxygen.

The former corner-back is taking part in this challenge to raise funds and awareness for the Mayo Mental Health Association, an organisation close to his heart, as the sports star has been very open about his own mental health in the past.

, he told us how his biggest fear is being homesick and not seeing his children for several weeks.
Dad of Caiden, 13, Mila-Rae, eight, and Sadie, three, Padraig said he has been working with a psychologist on how to deal with these thoughts and emotions while away.

Looking at it in a positive light, he said: 'You have to remember it's a long, long way away and we still have things that other people didn't have 10, 15, 20 years ago. They can be with us. I can video call the kids every single day. I'll be out of contact with them for maybe two or three days, but for 80 per cent of the trip I'll be able to stay in communication.'
If he's feeling low and unable to contact home, Pádraig has this covered. In his bag, he will bring 'a couple of letters with me from them [his kids]', to get him through the tough times.
As for the kids, Dad has thought about them as well. 'I've left a few bits and pieces from me, like voice notes, so that they know he is always there. that make girls at night or whatever, like all those voice notes.'

Knowing that this challenge can be dangerous, Pádraig is aware that there are two sides to this task - a selfish and selfless side.
'There's a lot of selflessness, and I think it's going to do a huge amount for the kids who are at the forefront of this and for a lot of other people, but you also have to acknowledge the kind of selfish aspect to it, too.'
This is something Padraig wants to do for others, but understands that time away from dad may be hard.
However, the former footballer knows how important this trip is, and if he decides to go again in a few years, his daughter Mila-Rae will be right there beside him, climbing to the top.

'She's very conscious of it because she's done a lot of hiking with me. We've done a good bit of climbing together, and I think she has a pretty good understanding for an 8-year-old of what is and what risks are involved.'
Just like her dad, though, she loves to get out and about in nature and when it's done for a good cause, that is even better.
Heading on the expedition on March 30, Pádraig will climb the 8,848 metre ascent, proving that even the most daunting personal mountains can be climbed.
Good luck, Pádraig!
